Sky Go - Free for all Sky customers

Found 14th Aug 2014
Just signed up to Sky TV and found out that you get Sky Go completely free - thought they'd charge you more!!

Sky Go means you can watch Sky on any device, so really good when you want to avoid the husband watching football...

Key things:
- Free!
- Register two devices - laptop, tablet or smartphone
- Live channels and on demand (lots of box sets too)

Enjoy - Harl!

You have to pay extra, in order to download & store.

The app is fussy, in terms of which devices it will work on.

The picture quality is SD not HD, and unlike BBC Iplayer, you cannot get subtitles ( to stream or download)

Wow can't believe how many people are rating this cold!

@bvmjain - I find the picture quality fairly good and don't think you can download & store on iPlayer?

Hopefully some people will find this useful

And you can't mirror it from your phone to a telly, how crap is that?

Moved from Freebies to Deals as you have to pay to have Sky so it's essentially not free but included in your package. Thanks for sharing.

Because anyone who has Sky will have been told this dozens of times by post and by email and there is no deal here anyway

it should of been free for sky customers from day 1, all programs in SD in today's technology that is poor,

Hasn't Sky Go been "free" since it was made.

Don't really see it as a deal.

Glad your happy though OP

I thought it was always free? Been using it on my phone and iPad for 2 years now

This is something that has existed for many years and has never been paid (aside from the recently introduced download feature).

It cannot be relied upon. For example occasionally an update will render the app useless on your specific device. Supported devices change. There is no absolute certainty a device you buy will be supported. Servers do go down especially during really popular events - works best when low demand. Often slows / buffers / struggles when a major incident eg a goal occurs (have experienced this a few times when connected in various ways and on various devices). Quality can be highly variable and again drops when major incidents happen.

But when it works it's excellent!!

Just can't be relied on.

One final example - when app is updated old versions suddenly won't work so if you've not been able to update for some reason it won't work until you do.

Welcome to hotuk deals, thanks for taking the time to post. Don't take this post to heart someone will have found the details useful.

I believe it's sky go that is free. And sky go extra which allows you to download the videos to view while offline.

Sky go extra is free if you get the family/movie/sports packages.

This isn't a new deal.

I've used the feature to catch up on tv over 4g and it does take about 20 or so seconds to catch up to standard quality.

Watching a movie on demand through this, you are forced to a 90 second advert (3 x 30 second adverts).
TV shows on demand is 60 seconds of forced adverts.

Nice way for the service provider to make some extra money.

I rarely use sky go, it's nice to have as an option but it's low on the list of services I go to.

sky go extra that isn't free*

Just a warning for any newbies to using their SKY GO, you are allowed a certain amount of devices per account depending on your SKY package BUT you can only make one change to your SKY GO Account per month.
We have 5 devices allowed on our account, we were only using 4 so my brother added his mobile for the 5th. Pretty soon after I had my iPad stolen, got a new one straight away as I was going in to hospital for surgery but I couldn't delete my old iPad and add the new one as my brother had added his phone to the SKY GO Account that month. Hope that makes sense, basically any changes are only allowed once a month to the account, which includes adding a new device, deleting an old device. I had murder with SKY but they wouldn't budge.
I've never had any problems with the quality and reliability of it though, I use it a lot while in hospital.

sky go isnt free. sky costs 20+ quid a month. Sky obviously cover the costs of sky go within this payment but advertise it as free. Not exactly a new trick.

Every year existing customers get a letter stating 'the price of your sky is going up.....this is due to amazing new features!', which they will inevitably market as 'free bonus additions' to new customers.

You most certainly can download and store from the BBC iplayer, albeit storage is time limited.

What makes the deal even worse is the device limit. Its bad enough they limit you to how many devices that can be registered but before it became SkyGo it was called SkyPlayer and they allowed 4 devices rather than 2. If they must have limits it should unlimited number of devices registered but only 2 using it at the same time like Netflix, Amazon and even a sky's own NowTV services.

And the image quality really isn't good enough. NowTV streams better than Sky Go and your paying much less to get the movie pack and entertainment pack than you pay for Sky to get the same content

We don't have the movie or sports packages, I think we have Variety so we don't get SkyGo Extra. It's also capped if you don't get Extra you can't go above 1.4Mbps but I've found that if you watch live TV it can creep up into HD.

They moved it from 4 to 2 so that they could ultimitately put that in as an added bonus for skygo extra and encourage people to upgrade (by which i also mean people upgrading to extra packages (sports and movies) which they wouldnt have before for the 'free' extras).

I dont blame them for trying to protect themselves from the many customers who 'share' their subscription with family and friends, losing them income (might actually feel sorry for them if it wasnt such a rip off in the first place!).

you dont get owt, for nowt.
