Thanks Amibees - that's a great price

I'm getting a 404 message on the link at the mo

if for instance i had the full sky package, I could let family and friends watch the same channel over the net?

if so ideal for ppv events

Is the rest of the world really so boring you have to take your tv channels with you :?

mmmm Good toy, but if you use www.orb.com orb software on your PC it will do it for free, even better if you have a TV card, but if not buy a decent DVB TV card and bingo.

Not Hot nor cold, but free alternative out there

Note this is the Slingbox Classic which was replaced a long time ago with slingbox solo and slingbox pro, i also beleive there is an HD version.

Also note this is not wireless.

This from the Trusted Reviews review
"However, the software help warns that not all type of programmes can be accessed – this includes pay-per-view, encrypted and radio-"

If this is the case, then what's the point?

Might not be the latest version but worth having for iphone users (like me!) alone for the app adamck mentioned!

Not sure how that works as it is just plugged in with a SCART cable. Can SCART carry encryption codes that tells Slingbox to block it??

Not sure that's the case. The iPhone app is only listed as compatible with Slingbox SOLO or Slingbox Pro, not the basic one. Says the Slingbox Classic may stream with "some configurations only". It also used to be the case that it would only stream to wi-fi, not 3G - this was rumoured to be changing, not sure it has yet though. Finally, the iPhone app costs an extra £17.99...

orb is better and free IMO providing you use your pc as a media hub.

Says £70

My mistake, mayday30 brings it down

£39.99 plus delivery for me. Total of £43.98 at least.

Great bits of kit, but....£40 for a CLASSIC??

Sorry, but this is stone cold to my mind.

Where is it cheaper?

So can this be used with just one Sky Box? One person can be at home using the Sky box and then simeltaneously another family member can choose their own channels to watch from anywhere in the world on the PC or is it only that you can do one or the other?

Nowhere as it happens, but its still about 4 iterations old.

You cant use a sky box with it, as no HD inputs.

Do these things have built in Freeview tuners?

Scart carries macrovision for DVD's so I assume its similar to that?

Yeah but good if you are after a basic model.

What if my question was asked about the slingbox pro? What would the answer be?

You can use the RF output from your SKY box.

I believe the SB Pro has HDMI....not sure.

Note that this has no SCART either (not at home to check mine, but I'm fairly sure it doesnt).

Effectively, you get Component in or coax - I think...!

Sorry was a tad hasty with the "no sky box" comment.

I meant to say no HD inputs.

I really didnt think the classic had SCART?

Does the Sky HD box have an RF out...? If so, interesting!

No you have to use a code to get it at that price as mentioned in the OP.

Mine does... SKY HD box in the lounge. However I am sadly still sending the sky signal around the house to the other TV's using coax because I haven't bothered to join the 21st century yet..

Thanks for the info on inputs but I really wanted to know if people at home are watching Sky at home and then I want to watch it from a PC/laptop at a completely different location. Can this be done at the same time or can you only do one or the other at a time? Thanks

Here's a nice little video tutorial from the manufacturers to show people what it does and how it's set up. Well worth a watch:

The Slingbox picks up the output from your SKy box, or freeview box, or any other device you have plugged into it, and streams it directly across the web. Upshot is you're watching the same program as the person at home. If you change channels remotely, it's just got an IR extender on the devices, so it changes the channel at home too

It will output whatever the sky box is outputting I believe.

This means that you can watch it, in a totally different location, but will have to watch the same channel as the actual TV.

Also, you will have to allow some ports out of your firewall on your router, and probably configure NAT (Network Address Translation) to allow access in.

Hardly an alternative product when this thing can stream live Sky tv to a PC or laptop.

Your solution doesn't allow this.
