Thanks hellodave!

300 recharges doesn't sound an awful lot? I wonder if you can buy replacement batteries?

FWIW ChainReactionCycles are also doing a similar unit for 19.99, with discounts for larger orders, they also have a twin unit with a secondary 2.5W light for longer running time in built up areas for the same money:

Replacement Lead Acid battery packs are available, but typically cost £30!

After about 300 charges, the charge held diminishes, but not significantly so. Also worth noting that real life applications you'll only be charging it daily or less over winter months, so you should get 2 good years out of one pack!

Finally IMHO whilst a reasonably good system, commuters may be better off using either LED front lights, or investing in a dynamo based system. There is nothing worse than setting off for a commute in the dark evening to discover half way through you forgot to switch the charger on the previous night!

YMMV - Rufus.

Also note that these lead acid batteries are considerably heavy. I agree that a good LED light system is much better than these.

LED technology has moved on leaps and bounds ( for ]example) which has had some good ]reviews - so for the significant low weight and extremely long run times this is the technology communters should be looking towards.

I specifically want something for offroad use...
Would a Cateye EL320 be up to the job? Or the Cateye EL530 :?

Or Cateye EL-500BS Power Opticube ???

I think I will go for the the EL530. Anyone used one off-road?]http//ww…955
THE EL-500 WAS THE BRIGHTEST BATTERY FRONT LED BY A MILE BUT HARNESSING THE VERY LATEST LED TECHNOLOGY, CATEYE’S NEW EL-530 SURPASSES THIS BY 50% WITH NO PRICE INCREASE!!!
USING ONE ULTRA BRIGHT WHITE LED WITHIN CATEYE’S PATENTED OPTICUBE LENS, THIS LIGHT HAS AN OUTPUT IN EXCESS OF 1500 CANDLEPOWER AND A MAXIMUM 50 HOUR RUN TIME!
THE EL-530 SPORTS A STYLISH GUNMETAL LENS HOUSING AND INCLUDES A MAGNETIC SWITCH, MAKING IT TOTALLY WATERPROOF AND WEATHER RESISTANT.
