Im not a fan of leases anyway but this feels expensive?

Not sure if that's a joke as its a Smart ForFour, if you have a family of 5 then you will only be able to take out your favourite 3 family members.

You'd have to look at depreciation amongst other things to gauge value versus a new non lease car and it will be out of warranty however you buy it so no real difference there.

Yes, but in that final year if something goes wrong, you'd be paying out to repair only to then hand the thing back. Over 3 years for a lease makes no sense for me, as you'll also need to MOT it, too.

BUT, this is a cracking price with no initial rental /deposit.

The four refers to doors, no? From the lease site:

12 years ago, the Smart City Coupe / Cabrio was rebranded the ForTwo and Smart decided to release the ForFour at the same year. The bigger brother is a more spacious Smart car, built to accommodate four passengers, five at a push.

The ForFour is a four-door Smart car with the same charm and appeal of all smart cars.

Download the PDF brochure and the photos in there shows fours seats and four seat belts. There is no middle seat in the rear bench.

I saw this yesterday via email but dare not post it (thanks JSmooth) as someone like me who knows nothing about cars or cares about looks knows hate may ensue.

Glad it's an OK deal though, I'm tempted.

One question, are new cars likely to break in their fourth year then?

They know how to make silly money
Had a forfour prime premium night sky version on a 2 year lease and it was fine for my commuting needs. A 4 year lease is a bit long as other stated it will go out of warranty and need an mot after year 3
It's also the pure version which is really basic

My mate had a 3.5 year old Mokka that required a £2k repair, think it was the driveshaft that broke.

Bought the Black Edition ForFour (top spec) for £10k with 1500 miles on the clock last August. Really happy with it. Dirt cheap to run and no need for Road Tax. 2 kids fit in back fine but center console between seats prevents a 3rd person and no 3rd seatbelt.

You would have a job getting a pushchair in the back but as my youngest now knows what his legs are for this isn't really an issue. Be warned - boot space will just about fit small luggage bags and a few other items.

I would say that under the bonnet and similar spec is almost identical to a Renault Twingo except the Twingo is cheaper. Second Hand with 5000 miles on are around £6500.

That said the Smart is really well made - turning circle is insane and being rear wheel drive and weighing next to nothing it's fun in the snow

I'm trying to work out the economics of my situation. My 53 plate vw golf dirty diesel just broke, new starter motor I think. Quotes £215-£250.

I don't 'need' a car to commute but sometimes do.

Paid £700 for the VW about 18 months ago. Biggest expense has been two new tyres. This will be biggest by far plus the guilt of owning a diesel has me thinking to scrap.

Hate that I need a car but where I live too dangerous to always cycle plus convenience of a car is great.

I dunno, just sounding out. Like one post said £25 a week for hassle free motoring. But four years is long.

I agree with l this. I have a proxy premium and love it. zero road tax. £200 insurance, i feel like I hardly fill it up and the turning circle is amazing. I've never found a space I can't get it in.
It does everything I need it too and I'd buy one again. The appearance grows on you...
It probably won’t, but all Smarts look as if it’s going to squash up like a tin can if you have a slight accident. I think I’ll be getting my kids something more sturdier for their first car. Very cheap monthly cost tho...but very fugly IMO

The picture is bit misleading, this model isn't specced up with nice alloys. In fact, no alloys at all. Very basic model. Take a look - Smart ForFour Pure

Look at it this way:
If leasing is cheaper over 4 years at the base cost level due to depreciation etc then it's a good deal.
Any extraneous costs such as repairs or MOT failures will impact you regardless of how you financed the deal regardless of whether it's a 3 or 4 year deal.
In other words, if you plan on keeping the car for 4 years, look at the fixed known costs and ignore the others as they will impact you the same either way.

Excuse my Americanism
Good value if you don't mind driving a toy car (what other car needs crosswind assist??) and want worry free cheap motoring (that siad, it looks cheap monthly, but £5K buys you a lot of second hand car and a lot of maintenance budget plus a car to sell at the end of it) .

I also sympathise with the sentiments about not wanting to be in a crash in one of these things. When you can sit in the driver's seat and lean back and touch the rear windscreen, it doesn't fill you with confidence about what will happen to your kids if you're rear ended at by a transit on the motorway...

No alloys, cloth seats, no sat nav, no heated seats. Don't get me wrong I really enjoyed my 2 year lease on my forfour prime premium night sky. However a 4 year lease is too long and I paid about the same as this on a 2 year lease for a better spec.
