Would check the price of the refills too before buying.

Complete with catchphrase, 'Get busy with the fizzy', the iconic machines were one of the 'must have' gadgets of the 70s and 80s.

During the peak of their popularity the products were even delivered by milkmen up and down the country.

Britain's social mobility is high but politicians threaten it
British shoppers return to the high streetBut in the last two decades the machine, which was first invented in 1903, has vanished from mainstream stores.

Now they are back in time for Christmas with a fresh range of flavours, a new, sleek machine - and the same catchphrase.

They will be available in Tesco, Robert Dyas, Lakeland Plastic and a host of independent stores.

Mark Wyatt, general manager for SodaStream in the UK, said: "Anyone who was around in the 70s or 80s will remember SodaStream.

"Everyone fell into one of two categories - either you were popular because you had one or green with envy because you wanted one.

"The SodaStream machine has truly iconic status in the UK and I'm sure it is going to be one of the big hits in shops this Christmas."

Mr Wyatt, 37, said the modern day incarnation of the SodaStream machine is almost unrecognisable from the device that carbonated drinks all those years ago.

He added: "We have changed the whole range so the drinks are much healthier and are completely natural.

"The machine itself is much sleeker.

"I grew up in the 70s and 80s and I know what an impact SodaStream machines had so I am so excited to see them back on shelves again.

"We hope the nation will enjoy getting busy with the fizzy all over again."

SodaStream machines along with 13 different flavours will be available in 28 Tesco stores nationwide and from the supermarket chain's online shop.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: "We've had lots of requests from customers asking if we stock SodaStream machines.

"We're expecting it to be a big seller when it goes on sale in store this week.

"Whether it's due to its nostalgic appeal or people looking to save money on soft drinks this Christmas, SodaStream is perfect for Christmas entertaining."

SodaStream machines force carbon dioxide gas stored in a cylinder into a bottle of water, making it fizzy.

Varieties of concentrated syrups are available to flavour the water and during its heyday, several famous brands were available in SodaStream form including Tizer, Fanta, Sunkist and Irn-Bru.

The firm, which is now Israel-based, also released milkstream, a variation on the SodaStream for making milkshakes.

Comet have a similar one for £9.99]http//ww…ion;-)

Still got mine from "the old days".......its in the charity bag waiting to go, maybe should hang on to it.

I have one of the new look machines and its great but the issue is the syrup, its just their own and since its now preservative and colour free etc they dont really taste that great, if they would bring back the Brand name drinks then I might use it more.

Even then, they never QUITE tasted as good though :-(

In the days when soft drinks were dearer and the Sodastream range was good, with cylinders and syrups readily available everywhere, there was a potentially arguable reason for having one........ I had one myself - There most definitely isn't a reason to have one now!

I still have one of the original machines at home. (~80's). I dug it out last year when I moved. The kids laughed at me when I told em it was a pop machine! - They laughed even more when the machine 'farted'.
Was surprised that the gas canister still worked. (ok, so I had to use high juice squash and it tasted awful.. but still)
Might try some proper soda stream cordial if i can find any.

I got this one, at this price an all.

Where do you buy the syrups and extra gas cannisters from?

Get the comet one at 9.99 and they seem to have a 7.49 tasters pack. cheaper than this deal and/or the tesco deal.

Sainsbury's might sell the gas and Boots might do the syrups.
I'm just using it for fizzy water as I have a filter tap.

Does anyone know if this one comes with the gas cylinder as it doesnt actually say it does:

Cheers. I had a quick look online and there are a few companies who supply the mixer and gas.

Judging by the lack of heat, I think you may be wrong - but hey, at least you haven't wasted many thousands of pounds re-releasing it like sodastream have, if the CEO of sodastream had ever been to a car boot sale he/she may well have re thought the whole idea, funny how these AWLAYS end up at a boot sale lol!

Buy bottled carbonated water - 10p from asda and tesco and mix your own squash....kids love it and much cheaper.

Tesco has the gas but no syrup.
You have to exchange the gas bottle, can't buy it.
