SoftMaker Office 2006 for Windows **FREE DOWNLOAD** £0.00

You will receive is a fully-functional, non-crippled, not time-limited version of this office suite... totally free of charge, without any obligations. They hope you will upgrade to the 2008 version (http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/436123/softmaker-office-2008-for-windows-o), but the 2006 is fine.

Can also be installed to a USB stick, making it portable for reading and writing MS Office files.

Try it out. It's only 24Mb for a whole office suite. It loads really fast, is fast in operation and as a personal office suite it will do everything you would need. Won't deal with MS Office 2007 files as above states, but it's free and fast.

I recommened
Open office found at:

Openoffice.org

Theyre compatible with Microsofts documents and its free.

This is free for a reason.

It does suggest that it is compatible with Office 2007 - from the web site: "Reads and writes your Word documents seamlessly (Microsoft Word .doc 6.0 to 2007)".

Sounds interesting enough to give it a try - I like the idea of taking it on a USB pen drive. Could be useful for school kids too.

So's this one! ;-)

Personally, I'd stick with OpenOffice.org myself - the current 3.1 release is pretty good for a free product. The other reason (than being free) I like OO.org is that it's also cross-platform (Windows, Mac and Linux), which very few (if any?) other office suites - free or paid - can claim to be, including any version of SoftMaker.

Err, Softmaker has versions for WIndows, Linux, BSD, Pocket PCs and Windows CE. Admittedly no Mac version, but to say it's not cross platform would suggest your opinion is not particular informed.

There is nothing wrong with OpenOffice - it is quite plainly better in mosts respects than Softmaker Office. I run Softmaker and OpenOffice on all of my 4 computers, 3 of which run only Linux. If I need to type a quick letter, I will use Softmaker because the program will be up and running and I'll be part way typing the letter before OpenOffice has even got past its' splash screen. That's just a simple fact. I'm not lucky enough to have quad core computers with 8GB of RAM, if you are then good on you, run bloatware like OpenOffice because you can.

I still use Softmaker 2006, the one that's being given away free. It's a little gem as a freebie, particularly on older computers. Take it for what it is a freebie, free as in beer, not free as in speech like OpenOffice. Yes, stand on the tops of buildings if you must and shout out that OpenOffice is better because it is. While you are it include Abiword as well. We could even turn this whole thread into an argument as to whether Abiword is better than OpenOffice.

For gawd sake just vote it cold and be done with it pleeeeese!!
