Same price everywhere!
Yeah, it's been £179 since before Christmas, as several online retailers, including Amazon.

It should drop to £149 before long..
My wife wants the SONOS system (but like I said to her, “What you want and what you get, are two separate things”). Is this the main speaker and all other additional speakers run off this one? Is their an alternative system (less expensive)? Thanks.

This is one of the least expensive speakers in the range, the only one cheaper is basically this speaker without the voice control. You can just have one speaker or if you get more they can work together. You pay a premium for Sonos stuff but it generally sounds very good in comparison to cheaper speakers.

It can develop into a habit though and get expensive quickly. If you have small room and and don’t mind a slight drop in audio quality Amazon Echoor Google Home speakers may be a cheaper way forward.

Thanks. So depending if you wanted a bigger “boom” for your buck; this speaker would do the job and (Sonos play 1) and the. Other smaller speakers could be put in other rooms.

For bigger rooms you’d want the Play 3 or Play 5 (but the latter is some hundred pounds). This and the Play 1 are the same size and good for kitchens, bedrooms, home offices rather than as your main speaker.

You can pair 2 play 1's or One's for a larger room too.

And I would say that’s preferable to one play 3. You get full stereo sound for the same price and, let’s be honest, the play 3/5 are ugly looking things so two smaller speakers is a better solution...a mon avis.
Price has now gone up to £199
