these are the outgoing model and should be much cheaper from these than this! You'll get UK ones cheaper than this in a couple of weeks

The new play one with Alexa has just been announced

These were never £219

And, the above comment is right... with the Sonos ONE on the horizon at £199 rrp the standard Play1’s (as good as they are) should be around their original pre ‘brexit’ price of £125.

The old play ones such as this are exactly the same as the incoming ones other than a slight design tweak and a far field mic. These current models have a mic built in already and the new software upgrade released 4th Oct will ‘activate it’. Also the same update allows you to use the existing Sonos speakers to be used with a Amazon Alexa device such as the Dot.

The pre hike prices were £160 with frequent deals of around £145. £125 prices were with rare deals, although I was fortunate to get them at that price

Its more than a tweak - play 1 do not have a mic and software wont magic one into existence. There's no Alexa built in but they can now be set as a device for an alexa skill on your echo - but a bit clunky to use. More useful to have as part of a smart home setup like Smarthings where it can be event driven

It’s not built in. You need an Alexa and then the skill. It is also in beta and only supports Amazon music.

Obviously you need an Alexa you nugget how on earth are you supposed to pair it with Alexa if you don't have one. I hope you don't think the new sonos has a built in Amazon Echo lol plus it also supports spotify and nto just Amazon music :P

Pretty sure the new sonos does have a built in Amazon echo type device in It? Or at the very least it just has the sonos Alexa skills in it? The new one has the microphones to hear the commands directly where as the old ones you would need a separate device like the echo dot. Personally having tried it out yesterday it's still a bit rubbish I think, don't know how easy the commands would be to select the right source. Are you going to have to say really long things like. Play the bends album by radiohead from Spotify in the living room ? It's probably easier just doing it from your phone. Suppose it's good for skipping tracks tho

Nugget?

Do some reading you prick. The new one does have Alexa built in. The current generation of speakers need a dot (or maybe an echo but that seems a bit of overkill).

At this minute the beta only supports Amazon Music. It will indeed however support Apple Music, Spotify, Tunein etc...

Unless my Spotify is broke / needing upgraded.

But here’s a tip - don’t be so rude. Horrible Keyboard warrior.

Nugget!

Having tried it yesterday also I agree. The app is every bit as handy.

It's pretty much designed to be used with 1 music source solely, which you can set to your default in Alexa and that is what carried through to Sonos, so not too bad unless you use a merge of music sources.

Spotify support is coming but basically anything not supported by Alexa won't be supported by Sonos.

They are also working on new firmware that will stop you having to specify the room, Alexa should learn which echo device is close to which sonos etc. this will be good, the same method will only quieten the volume of the speaker near the echo you are talking to, currently it quietens them all.

I'd recommend just buying cheap Play:1's when they get reduced and buying an Echo dot for each room, as you can't stereo pair a Sonos One with a Play:1, only with another Sonos One, unless you are starting your collection of course.

Anybody bought this and got the email code for the Amazon Echo dot discount that they don't want???
