It’s due to Play FIVE replacement being available for pre-order today. Doesn’t look like a massive difference between the two however.

There really isn't
The difference probably is that you want to future proof yourself. Beside they can enable additional features later through software updates which may not be available on the older devices due to hardware limitations.

I would go for the newer version given the price difference is not that massive.

Apparently there is no voice assistant in the new Five. Bonkers!!!

Unfortunately odds are in about two years time Sonos will shaft all of us play 5 owners and stop support for them and that’s when I’ll jump ship! Got 7x play 5s and if they do me over like they did the others recently they’ll know about it!
The EOL debacle is what would make me weary of buying the 5 in the offer above in case they get shortened support period. Although if the spec under the hood is pretty much the same then there's no real reason it should make a difference.

I've got 2 x Connect Amps that am pondering what to do with. Might use the 30% to get a pair of FIVE and get a new Amp with the other.
They have made it tricky to know what to purchase. Do I purchase the newest kit with longer support and potentially more features over time, or do I buy the older kit so I can keep my multiroom experience all through the same app.
The S2 software update is coming on 8 June and that’s when the old Play 5 will be left on the legacy network (assuming you move non-legacy devices to the S2 software). theverge.com/202…-s1

This isn’t the old though.

The old 5 has a built in mic, so if they wanted to surely they could have added assistant?
Don't worry everyone. According to the 'Details' description it's THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED, WITH TOMORROW IN MIND

"The PLAY:5 is meticulously engineered with an eye towards the future of home audio. Every detail, both inside and out, has been carefully considered to be relevant today, and compatible with tomorrow. It combines elegantly restrained good looks with agile internal sensors and ongoing software updates to provide your home with the most future-proofed audio solution currently available. So you can enjoy the purest expression of the music you love, now and for years to come."

"Years to come". So that's at least two

Are you sure? I’d assumed this was a reduction on the old one. The new one isn’t called the Play: 5, but having seen the link now, Peter Tyson is clearly calling it the ‘new’ Play: 5 - I’m confused!

EDIT: So only the Play: 5 (Gen 1) will be legacy, the Play: 5 (Gen 2) will be S2 compatible. And the Peter Tyson offer is on the Play: 5 (Gen 2), not the latest Sonos Five.

It’s a play 5 gen 2. The one that has just been announced is the Sonos 5. Both are getting S2 software. Hardly anywhere sells the ancient play 5 gen 1 (discontinued in 2015 and released in 2009) which isn’t getting updated.

Thanks I’d just figured it out and edited my comment when you replied. I’m slumming it here with my Sonos Ones!

This will turn into the Play:1, Sonos One gen 1 and Sonos One gen 2 malarkey which followed that release lol.

7 play5s!!
Sweet
I have a couple of the original Play:1s without Airplay and want to add that functionality. Was interested in the Playbar but apparently that doesn’t have Airplay either. Can anyone advise about what the options are?

Any other speaker other than the ones you’ve mentioned pretty much.

If you've got budget for the playbar buy the new Arc
Sold out!
It’ll be interesting to see how far these drop between now and June with the new one being priced at £499.
