It’s a good camera, but unless I’m missing something it’s a little overkill for taking pictures of blankets?
Baby blankets?
The Canon 1300d is an entry level DLSR, this A6000 is an upgrade to the "entry level" and its mirrorless.
Some Pros for mirrorless specifically this A6000 vs canon 1300d;
# Looks like a normal digital camera (can shove into a big pocket),
# Doesn't "look" expensive/nick-able, good for holidays (especially with the performance)
# Weight/size is good for day trips
# Near "bottom price" before it goes obsolete (personal opinion). I bought mine nearly 2 years ago for £400.
# High shutter speed clicks per min.
Cons;
# Sony UI "is for engineers, not photographers".
# Canon has a larger lens options, this factor is greater when you start upgrading gear.
# With mirrorless you end up using the screen much more than the viewfinder (like a digital camera/phone camera), you'll get used to it but some hardcore photographers do not prefer this due to lag etc etc, I personally don't see the issue.
# Stupid Sony Raw format is annoying... I mean I guess its just a plug-in at the end of the day but another Sony propitiatory thing.
For reference, I have the A6k now, I had a similar Nikon equivalent DSLR (higher spec) previously. been playing with cameras for about 10 years - "Hobbyist" level.
I'm currently working on studio portrait/flash photography, so I have a few lens, wireless flash guns , soft boxes etc..
I'm 'comfortable' with general outdoor photography. Currently looking to get a 12mm manual focus lens for more landscape work. Don't do sports/wildlife photography so I cant comment how the A6k fairs on this.
but I would go John Lewis for the customer service...
No problem.
To clarify on lens; both the Sony and Canon has good range of semi pro to pro lens to get you started.
"lack of options" for Sony is more referring to if you start wanting to spend like 4 figures on 1 optic. that's when you hit "limited options". The quality of lens in each camp is comparable, so is the price, its more which brand you want to "sit under".
Ah, potentially negative point for Sony (though this is very down the road) is that there aren't any clever (TTL Etc) cheapo chinese flashes on the market.
I had to buy a Semi good brand one for £200++ (wireless flash) as opposed to potential £60odd ones in the Canon/Nikon variant. I haven't checked the market lately (9+ months), so maybe check that out first if you want to do flash photography.
On the flipside... Sony A6k can do HHS (main reason why I upgraded to A6k). EG:
