Apart from more mega pixel any other major difference between A5000, which is £120 cheaper?

The focussing system is taken from the A6000 and is quite phenomenal, and apparently the A5100 also has the lates video codec for capturing HD footage that even the A6000 doesn't.

This is a fantastic price for this camera but it's worth paying the extra for the A6000 to have the electronic viewfinder. Good cash back deals to on the A6000 and the silver model was in amazons daily deals last week.

At this price is it not on par with a DSLR? Albeit beginner versions. This appears to be more compact but is it better than say a Canon/Nikon DSLR around this price range (with standard lens).

Stupid question but do you frame the shot using the screen at the back? Is that not a electric viewfinder?

I think I might go for this deal due to the selfie screen.

frame with screen at back yep
electronic viewfinder is the type you put your eye up to, more stable and i guess natural to compose

In sunny daylight its hard to see the rear screen hence the electronic viewfinder comes into its own on very bright days and its is more natural composing with the camera held to my eye.

It has the same size sensor as entry level DSLRs, and for beginner photographers we as shooters will be a larger limiting factor on image quality than the camera will be! The A5100 has advantages over similarly priced DSLRs in being much smaller and compact, and it has faster continuous shooting by a frame or two. A DSLR will have advantages in their significantly larger ecosystems of lenses and accessories, faster and more accurate autofocus and tracking, optical viewfinders, and generally more physical controls. Handling can be a win for either system, it's subjective to each individual user- I much prefer DSLRs when it comes to ergonomics for example.

I'm still using a NEX-7 (and a 5T) both of which are fantastic cameras.
I believe the AF is really excellent on this model (and the a6000). On a par with a DSLR, but I'll believe that when I see it tbh
I always thought shooting without a viewfinder would make life almost impossible but it really doesn't once you get used to it.

I have the A6000 and for the price of the 5100, I don't think the similar priced DSLR would be as fast. On YouTube, people reviewing the focusing speed of the A6000 were comparing it to top end Nikon SLRs and the A6000 kept up with them. The compact form factor is what drew me to mirror less and with the Sony kit lens my A6000 fits in a coat pocket. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you.

image and performance wise, how would this compare to the bigger (and older) sony A58 which is £309 on amazon?

Ordered

Would have preferred the a6000 but love the idea of the 180 deg tilt screen on the a5100.

its my 1st decent camera, hope im
Not disappointed.

Where is the best place to get a case from?

Wondering how soon price will drop on this camera.
