The bundled software with this will be handy.

The LG bluray and HD dvd player is faster plays both media so you can get those cheap HD dvds for just a few pounds more. Cold

You don't need a media centre PC as such - just a PC with a DVI or HDMI out.... although if you use DVI out you have to also have a sound output to your TV/surround system unless you have certain ATI graphics cards that also transmit sound through the DVI port when it's combined with their DVI->HDMI adaptor. But of course you would also need to have the PC reasonably close to your HD TV or long enough cable(s)

your spoilt these days, when dvd's first came im sure they were near £30 a dvd and apparently would still play if you put marmalade on it (lol!!), blu rays are nowhere near that

or stream wirelessly from your pc to a wireless device eg xbox360, though there are better and simpler options (by a proper blu ray player)

my xbox 360 is pants for media streaming wont stream hdtv and im not transcoding it. can i get a long dvi cable from my pc ? anyone know about burning hdtv to blueray??

Sorry, have never seen the point of combo drives, as they are inherently out of date. You only have to look at CD Writers with DVD-Rom drives!

And until Blu-ray writers reach below £100, I can't see as they will become mainstream.

So, sadly, this has to be cold, at whatever the price when you add in the HDCP issue.

do you need any special codecs, or will everything play fine out the box?

i have read somewhere you may need the right software

not sure if this sony drives comes with software but the LG i linked comes with powerdvd which will play blurays fine, you might only get 2.0 sound tho, have to purchase the deluxe version of powerdvd for 5.1 and hd audio formats i think. Or you could find the software illegally online of course.

Didn't mention streaming because wasn't sure if you could wirelessly stream that much data easily to be honest... and most people use the 802.11g standard for wireless network which operates at a maximum 54Mbit/s raw data, or 19Mbit/s throughput and Blu-ray reads at 1× at 36 Mbit/s and 2× at 72 Mbit/s, so would be either really tight for bandwidth or not cope at all maybe. So unless he has draft-n networking it might not be an option to stream.
Yes the simplest solution would be to buy a stand alone blu-ray player, or as I have chosen a PS3 because I use it for gaming etc too.

BTW, seen 5 metre DVI male -> DVI male cables for approx £6 on amazon or 5 meter DVI -> HDMI for approx £9 - should fit most rooms I would say, unless of course you have your PC in another room from your HD TV?

would a standalone bluray player be any better than this? and in what way?

are we talking about just the resolutions? if you have a bluray optical drive connected to a hd 1080p tv shouldnt it give you the same quality playback as a standalone bluray player?

there wont be any difference if you output to a 1080p hdtv from dvi or hdmi from pc graphics card or a standalone player. Just you wont get HD audio codecs unless your motherboard has hdmi out on it or you have an asus xonar av3 or auzentech hdmi audio sound card. Depends what speakers you are using 5.1 is enough for most people, a spdif optical cable from onboard audio or sound card would be fine for most people.

You can get graphics cards with hdmi out which send audio and video so you should hopefully be able to do hd audio codecs with 1 of those cheap £35 hdmi cards like some nvidia 9400gt cards and get your audio receiver to do the processing.

nice price...heat added.

Not a bad deal on the surface, but voted cold as the LG drive supports both formats for the same price

A digital signal is digital and no amount of stupidity in buying a £120 lead will make it any better as long as it fits properly and is manufactured correctly to do what the £120 cable does there is no difference in picture quality to same TV utter nonsense and ignorance to believe the dearer cable is better.

Please Ignore the above if you want to spend more money than you need or feel free to disagree, up to you.

RCA cables for one are a different matter, with analogue cables quality built and shielded cables can make a very big difference and the same with any other form of video cables quality has an advantage but not when 0's n 1's are involved and all that are sent are received.

I think there's a misunderstanding here. I believe (But I could be wrong) that he's referring to someone who said they'd connect this drive to a TV. When they said this, it seemed to imply that they were literally going to (Somehow) plug this drive into a TV, much like you would a DVD player or games console as no PC was mentioned, even though it's common sense to realise that you'd need a PC to use this drive.

I was not really replying to anyone although I quoted royals who said something about cheap 99p hdmi lead. I was not having a go at royals only at the idea that a 99p cable for this particular use was a bad thing. I just do not like seeing people waste money on a scam. Although I may have used words likely to offend the dumb

Although lots of computer Royals can be quiet when they are HTPC or water cooled the drive is probably louder than some peoples computers.

LG drive is a better option as pointed out a few times in this thread If the Sony was £39.99 would be worth having for some but I would still buy the LG as It can read Hd-Dvd.

btw the link does not work from clicking goto deal goes to play site but not page needed,
