I know that you don't get the films, but the deal with the PS3 seems better as you get the gaming element instead of just a stand alone player:

Voted warm due to this, but heat to the OP

People just don't get that that some people would rather a standalone than a PS3. Some will never play games and others want a proper piece of AV kit rather than a console. I mean the PS3 doesn't have a remopte that you can use to turn the damn thing on with!

So if you don't want a games console why is that deal better than this? £10 more and 8 less films? No DTS HD audio, no remote etc.

have to agree, the stand alone player from my point of view will look better cosmetically th\n the ps3,i dont want something as ugly as a ps3 under my tv in the sitting room, last time i seen anything that shape george foreman was leaning on it telling us how healthy we could all be..:-D

Fair do for both posts, but from a tech point of view why spend the same on a standalone when you can get extra functionality.

As regards the remote, you can turn it on and off with the bluetooth remote and the controller, so that's a moot point.

It is a proper piece of AV kit too. Optical out, streaming, video, DIVX, internet and games...seems proper AV to me

However, each unto their own and all that

Ermmm because you get 8 films free, a remote control, a nice looking unit, and a proper remote included DTS HD MA audio, bitstreamed HD audio output.

Why would anyone who doesn;t play games lose all of that and pay more just because it plays games?

It doesn't excell in any of those areas you mention either, Divx is outdated, optical has been around since the 80's, the internet cant be better than a pc, the streaming is limited, no .mkv support, no vc-1 or h264 support etc. And the games aren't yet any better than you can get on the 360 consistantly. For all of those things id rather have another device that does it properly.

Why is it so hard to understand?

This is the reason why i would not have a stand alone at this stage.

As this is only a Blue-Ray 1.1 model its money wasted. I haven't even seen any standalone players out there that is 2.0 compatible

Because you're talking anorak at me.

Ask the man (or child) in the street if they would rather have a Blu-Ray player or PS3 and we both know what the answer would be. Your post seems condescending at best. As I said at the end of my previous post, "each unto their own" - evangelsiing seems uneccessary
