So, John lewis seem to be price matching more and more at the moment including promotions. This could mean the Black Friday might get a bit tasty, especially on TVs and such... JLs 5 year guarantee is awesome on top of price matching, so you can't go wrong really.

Really decent price for this set, awesome reviews and imho Sony have really good built in speakers on loads of their TVs in comparison to others, right out of the box. That said, i am sure a lot of you would add your own amplifiers and sound systems anyway. But still £279 is a belter of a price

HDMI x 2
USB 2.0 x 1
Scart Socket x 1

The Sony R4 is quite simply, a great 40-inch Full HD TV. With HDD recording and a USB media player, you’ll be able to watch what you want at a time which suits. And thanks to a clear resolution enhancer, the picture quality boasts refined details for an even more immersive viewing experience.

Clear resolution enhancer -
Reducing noise and imperfections is Sony’s clear resolution enhancer. This great feature makes images sharper and more natural, delivering a clear difference compared to standard LED TVs. Contrast has also been improved which adds more depth and realism to what you see on the screen.

Slim design -
The elegant and slim design of the 40” screen joins form and function beautifully to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, even when mounted on the wall.

USB HDD recording -
With the Sony R4 you’ll never miss your favourite TV programmes again because you can record them, and watch at a more convenient time for you and your family. Simply programme your TV to record your preferred show with an easy connection of a USB hard drive.
USB media player
With the USB media player, you’ll be able to enjoy all your favourite music, videos and photographs with easy playback. And thanks to Digital Noise Reduction, your media sources, including the PC input, can benefit from the same advanced image processing techniques that are given to cable, satellite and broadcast signals.

Smooth motion -
With Motionflow XR 100Hz, every image on the screen refreshes at a higher rate than normal. Sports and fast-moving action look noticeably smoother, sharper and more natural, with reduced blur and judder.

I have been looking at this all morning. Tempted but worried Black Friday may throw up a better price or model. Does anyone know if I bought this now and it were to be reduced in BF - would JL refund the difference?
^ I'm. exactly the same.. want a new TV, but don't know wether to wait til Friday just afraid I might miss the good deal.
Same price in currys too. Without the 5 yr guarantee obviously. Think I'll wait a bit longer

Black friday TVs usually suck. They are not real deals but TVs made specifically for black friday. Get a TV that has good reviews.

They had this TV in John Lewis in Cambridge yesterday on clearance for £239. Really wasn't sold on the picture quality. Only had 1 and it was ex display, but I've been looking at this TV for a while and it didn't look that great. May have had something to do with how they'd set it up though. Might be worth seeing one running first
I contacted JL at the weekend about buying a TV now and whether they'll honour any deal on Black Friday. They said that the normal price match will apply.

So I ordered myself this for £279: Samsung UE40J5100. In my opinion it looked better than the Sony side-by-side. Just my 2p's.

Thanks for that. I think I have been holding off as I know it's a budget model. The model up at £379 is the one I would prefer. This site makes you so aware of better prices it makes it harder to just go for it!
So many Great tv deals, but what do I do with my old ones? They're still current, Freeview, HD and plenty of HDMI sockets etc.

Think I'll wait till more channels use 4K before I invest in an upgrade

looks good bud, do you know if you can record onto an external HD with this TV as I noticed the Sony one does. I have done away with my virgin tivo box as was.getting too expensive so I'm looking for something I can record programmes onto. Cheers
Black Friday should be called Blaupunkt Friday.

That's what will be flogged off to the underclasses.

Extra year guarantee, not sure what Richer Sounds are like on their Guarantees, i know John Lewis are very good.

Looks like a good TV, but those that are style concious should opt for the Sony, as it is much thinner and will look better on a wall mount.

Just my personal experience. JL over RS only because I found RS staff almost a bit too protective when you have an after sales issue

I like that Samsung TV also. Downside is Samsung sound is generally not so good on TV's but sorted with a Soundbar. Sony TV also has recordable freeview built in, if I read the description correctly?

Unfortunately the Samsung does not have USB record I simply went with what looked the best in the shop as all I need is a dumb screen to hook up everything I already have.

is the 5 year waranty with sony or the retailer? tempted to get one
Heat, ordered. 100hz, 1080 but doesn't specify p or i. The only downside I can see is only 2 hdmi ports. Is there such a thing as a splitter if I have 3 hdmi devices I want to attach?

No, your TV is higher up the specs scale, on paper at least. Just read the first paragraph; "Smart LED TV - WiFi - 4x HDMI - 2x USB Ports" Rest easy!

Well thats ok then ha ha thanks, I heard mine has very low input lag and 200hz refresh rate so is good for gaming, thats all I wanted it for, don't need wifi or anything.

Pretty clueless about tv's.
not sure whether to wait for black Friday, great find opp
Thanks OP. All the reviews seem good. Really good price coupled with the 5 year guarantee from JL. No need for a Smart TV, curved or 4k so just what the doctor ordered! Cheers.
if its anything like my 42 inch sony there ace. speakers are good for what it is.the pictures perfect well worth the money over the cheap tvs on black friday
Any good for gaming? Can't find the response times etc.
I'm also on the hunt for a 40 inch telly on Black Friday too.
I'm keen on the Panasonic tx-40cs520b but struggling to find a really good deal

Yup, like those amazing deals for Polaroid TV's they had last year.
Isn't this TV always this price? It's an entry set at best, IMO £280 is merely okay!

So this TV the dude just bought is better on paper. But not better on what? Should the deal not be for his TV, or should that be posted for us to hover our finger over the "buy" button? Who would have thought buying a TV could be such a minefield! The Samsung ones are good competition for Sony also. I am looking for a TV for gaming, streaming TV, watching TV and DVDs.

Richer Sounds are fantastic on their guarantees. A couple of years back I had a stereo that broke down just after the 12 month guarantee period had passed, they exchanged it for a new one no questions asked. Their 6 year guarantee for HiFi and TVs is usually a 10% add-on to the purchase price, and they actually refund this 10% during the last month of the extended warrant (though you have to make a request). I notice they're now offering the extended warranty as standard on many of their items.

I'd say their customer service is superior to that of John Lewis.

can you use a usb stick to record onto with this tv?

Yes you can but you can only record the channel your watching. kind of defeats the whole purpose of recording but not being able to watch another channel. Still the best budget tv out there. Personly i want to jump on the 4k band wagon.

I worked in electrical retail for a good few years and we would purposely set up the more expensive tv's with better cabling, inputs/media and settings. You can never judge the picture you see in stores. It's crap from a consumers perspective but true. When it comes to Samsung, in my time in the industry, they had a higher return rate than any other brand. I've always found their colours to be too unnatural also. However, haven't worked in the industry for 5 years now, and electronics move fast. My opinion would be to buy Sony or Panasonic for overall performance and quality.
In JL at the weekend they said if I bought a TV and they reduced the price on Black Friday then they would refund the difference.
Decent all rounder for the money . Cracking deal . Just make sure you familiar yourself with sony's hidden menus settings when setting up the picture . Cant go wrong with the 5 year warranty. Mother in law is looking for a new telly ! This would be ideal.
