I don't think there's any difference other than XG8096 seems to be an semi exclusive range for Currys and Sony Centres (so they can offer a price match guarantee that no one else can match!)

I spent ages comparing 8096/8196 and bought the 8096 from Sony Outlet (43" for £349) and am pleased with it. I could not spot any difference between the models, go to Sony site and compare, there's nothing between the two model ranges. Someone here said the 8196 had a dual core CPU but I can't find any reference anywhere about that. My instinct says they're totally identical in harware.
