"Stunning picture quality and excellent smart interface makes this Sony a highly desirable screen." What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine. Tested at £900.

ACTIVE 3D FOR A THRILLING EXPERIENCE

Once you've experienced 3D TV, ordinary TV just never seems quite the same. Images aren't just projected forward but appear to occupy the space behind the screen, too. This gives images an amazing depth that has never been possible with 2D TV. Thanks to Full HD 3D, active processing, the Sony KDL-50W829B offers breathtaking levels of detail and realism. Helping to enhance both 3D image quality and online video is X-Reality PRO. This intelligent processor recognises the type of material being viewed and optimises the TV accordingly. The result is even greater depth when watching in 3D. Two pairs of glasses are supplied.

MOTIONFLOW XR800HZ FOR SUPER-FAST MOTION

Standard with this Sony 50" 3D TV is Sony's top-end motion control - Motionflow XR 800Hz. This top quality Motionflow system works especially well with fast moving action, such as sports events, without the blur you can see with standard TVs. From a Hollywood blockbuster to a Formula One race, XR800 makes a significant difference.

BASS REFLEX SPEAKERS FOR IMPROVED SOUND QUALITY

Although no match for a separates home cinema system or soundbar, the Sony KDL50W829B's sound system is one of the better built-in systems. With bass reflex box speakers, this Sony TV offers a deeper and more powerful sound than you might expect from such a slim TV. Also helping improve the sound quality is Clearaudio + technology. This enhances dialogue for improved clarity, especially when set against noisy backgrounds. S-Force Front Surround 3D gives an added dimension to the sound with projection to match the 3D pictures. The S-Master 16 watt amplifier ensures it can fill a large room with sound, too.

SMART TV JUST GOT SMARTER WITH ONE-FLICK ENTERTAINMENT

Integrating smart functionality within TV is more seamless than ever with Sony's 2014 TV range. A brand new style of user interface makes accessing smart content more intuitive and less obtrusive. Rather than the range of smart apps dominating the entire screen, they can now be viewed along the bottom of the screen, whilst still watching whatever's being shown on the TV. Linking in to this, Tweet View shows a discreet Twitter feed on the screen, letting you watch and Tweet simultaneously. Taking this one stage further, the optional One-Flick touchpad (RMFED004 - not supplied) controls most functions at the swipe of a finger.

MASSIVE RANGE OF SMART CONTENT WITH THE SONY ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK

At the heart of the Sony KDL50W829B's networking ability is the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN). This gives access to a massive range of apps, including the highly popular YouTube, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Lovefilm, Twitter, Facebook and many more. In addition to an application based browser for the most well known sites, the KDL-50W829B also comes with a web browser for full Internet access (display of embedded video may be restricted). This Sony TV is also DLNA compliant meaning that you can stream data from your laptop, PC or NAS drive device. Even better, streaming from your home network hub can be via Ethernet cable or the built-in Wi-Fi connection. Thanks to smartphone apps for iPhone or Android, you can take control of the Sony with your phone's comprehensive touch screen.

FOOTBALL MODE

New and exclusive to this year's Sony models is Football Mode. This automatically adjusts the sound settings to enhance the roar of the crowd; making you feel part of the action. You can also browse football videos from YouTube and the FIFA website with ease.

FREEVIEW HD AND SCREEN MIRRORING

With Freeview HD built-in, there's no need for an HD set-top box. Freeview HD also ensures you get the best from the HD screen, giving more depth and detail to TV programmes. Screen Mirroring lets you watch what's on your mobile or tablet, on the big screen - wirelessly (Screen Mirroring Miracast requires a Wi-Fi network and Miracast certified smartphone. Smartphone firmware update may be required). SCART and component inputs also make it flexible enough to add older components you may have.

UNDERSTATED GOOD LOOKS AND VERSATILE STAND

The TV unit's design is every bit as stylish and subtle as you'd expect from Sony, with long-lasting appeal. With its contrasting, brushed aluminium finish and narrow bezel, this particular Sony 50" TV is one of the most elegant in its class. Matching this is a unique and mirror-finish flexible stand. Standing out from the more usual stand, this elegant design makes the whole TV look less intrusive in your room. It's also immensely practical as the stand can also be used as a basic wall bracket for the TV.

For a fully equipped 3D TV with comprehensive Smart technology and sleek design, the Sony KDL50W829B is at the top of its game.

That's great news. I filled in the cheaper elsewhere form at Amazon earlier, hoping they price match as I can get another partial refund from them, already had £30 back last night.

It says free view built in so do we need an extra aerial or anything?

You will need a connection to a normal TV aerial.

You can also pick up free satellite channels using a dish.

Thanks for replying

The version in Costco has a B on the end of the model number. Can anyone advise what this means?

I believe B is for black, there is also a silver version

pricespy also flagged this up this morning but not had time to review. Thanks for confirming JL price match.

Do amazon really price match anyone - I spoke to their customer care team and they said no - how did you manage to do that?

The TV is the same and can be referred to as the W829 or W829B or W829BBU - they all refer to this model. The silver version is known as the W815B which isn't confusing at all (_;).

Got this TV from Currys with free subwoofer before Christmas for £635 so this is realistic price. I like picture quality etc but screen mirroring is awful. I can connect my S4 Mini but it freezes a lot, the only app to work ok from tablet was Flipp so not happy on this front.

Great TV for gaming too thanks to the low lag - noticed that the W705 (non-3D version of the W829) is £20 more expensive than this model at the above site - odd.

Review of the 42 inch version here.

AFAIK the 42" is a different panel with passive 3D, so not much point in posting reviews to it.

Plenty of outstanding reviews for the 50" about anyway.

Amazon's whole pricing structure is set up to monitor competitors and adjust prices accordingly. Although if the site isn't on their radar, you can give them a nudge and hope they match.

I had bought this TV from John Lewis for 739 in Dec 14 and they had price matched it to 675 with RGB direct which now is selling this back for 699.
So this is a good price for this TV
Yesterday, i watched "Avengers Assemble" on this TV and am very impressed with the Picture quality on one of the usual HD channels through my sky connection.
Even tried 2D to 3D conversion which was not out of the earth but good experience.

Thank you for correcting, just to add is the W815 also has a lower refresh rate 600 vs 800.

your saying this has a Sat decoder built in ?(FressSat)?
I have older version (24in) of this tv and it does have great PQ also a good EPG if they haven't fudged it up with ads etc. SEN is dogs bottom scrapings imo.

No freesat listings, but does have a satellite receiver, I just use my tablet or phone as the EPG and remote.

Any DSE or banding issues on this set that people can comment on?

I have had this TV for a year and I paid £799. Fantastic TV and great deal. HOT!

This was available recently for £699 with soundbar so this is a great deal for those who didn't want a soundbar and couldn't be bothered with the hassle of trying to flog a free one. Good to see this set coming down in price, just wish the 55" would drop a bit.

I'll get my coat then

Not a bad price, these should be coming down in price now since the new range has been announced.

I've got the 50", and as said above don't compare the 40" as it's an LG panel unlike the 50" which AU Optronics.

Fantastic TV, great all rounder, even better once it's calibrated

Sony do not include 'free sat' as they have to pay for this, but they include the satellite connection but it will not have a EPG or be in listing order (channels).

I got that off the currys website but is it correct? I believe the 55" comes with the adapters included according to a member on here

Excellent find. I've been keeping an eye on this tv and it's the lowest price I've seen. Still hoping it might drop further though...

55" has mounting holes on the back.

50" will require the mounting bracket (Only if you want it to go on a counter lever). Don't go to Currys as they are useless and despite showing on the system they don't sell it. Contact Sony direct and they will supply the correct one.

Yes I went through x3 of these returning each one to Richer Sounds and an engineer visit who said it's just a characteristic of the panel Sony use.....very bad light bleed and DSE. Also virtually all HD sources are soft. Shame I wanted to like it, love the design and menu system, I paid 850 quid for mine.....

I returned it for a refund and bought a Samsung 50H6400 which is so much better.

Fact that you dropped to a 6400 say it all really, have you not noticed the colour banding and lack of detail on that set.... ?

The W815 (silver) is 600Hz Motion Flow and not 800hz like the W829.

Now I have a 5k iMac, I can't contemplate getting a 1080p TV again, plus, I think 3d is just a gimmick!

Anyone price matched at John Lewis? should work fine.

Got the 55" with sound bar & 5 year warranty for £799 a few weeks ago, it's a great TV
