Sony CMT MX550i / iPod HiFi Speaker Dock Stereo CD/DAB - Used - Brand New condition £116.99 at play.com

I have been looking to spend about 100 pounds on a new stereo and needed one that would fit on a bookshelf.

I came across this one on play.com - normal price brand new 169.99, but you can get it Used, but in new condition, from FactoryRefurbsDir, which I think is connected to play.com. (I read on this site someone saying that it's play.com selling off returns etc.)

I ordered it and it really was in totally brand new condition! The box had been opened and resealed, but everything inside looked untouched and in the original packaging.

I think it's the best I could have got for the price and there are several user reviews that rate it highly. (Although What Hi Fi only give it 2 out of 5).

I'm happy enough with it anyway - especially for 116!

Difficult to vote hot with that review, even at the price.

This looks like a reasonable alternative:

As I said, it's had plenty of good reviews, but What Hi Fi are probably a lot more picky than your average user. Also would have been reviewed at full price - 200 notes.

Sure - compared to my 400 pound separates system with 80W Wharfedale speakers (from the early 90's) the treble doesn't sound as good, but I think it's good for the price, and probably better than the BX77DBi - which I also considered.

These micro systems look nice, but audiophiles wouldn't consider them Hi fi. I did consider the Denon DM38 but thats 200 + with a set of average speakers. My budget was 100ish.

I also considered this Sharp one from Richer Sounds, as I read somewhere that Denon produce some of the components for it (again that was on HKUD, but couldn't find any other evidence), but it was too deep to dit on a bookshelf. (Anyway - I never did get to put the sony on the bookshelf where I wanted it as the power lead was a bit shorter than our old micro system!)

who in there right mind would buy any ipod/iphone sound dock? in a few years these will be incompatible with any player or phone on the market and piling up in charity shops across the world. disposible crap.
i still have a 40 year old hifi system that sounds & looks great and can play anything you plug into it without the need for an ugly dock, and will probably still be going strong in another 40 years if civilization is still standing.

It's a CD player with DAB+ and iPod Dock, USB playback etc. I agree that my system that I got in the early 90's sounds better - but it's massive. This is just a mini hifi system that was bought to fit on a bookshelf - still pumps out 60w.

I bet you haven't got DAB+ or even a CD player on a 40 year old system!

Um I still have my 1st generation iPod i got 10years ago (?) and it fits on my recently purchased radio alarm dock...... what are you talking about? Also unattractive? How attractive is your 40year old system.

After owning it for a couple of weeks, I am happy with the ways it looks and having listened to a bit of DAB radio, i think it sounds good. The Adele CD I listened to first probably didn't really demonstrate it's range - but I've listened to radio 1 a few times and with the more upbeat music they were playing, it sounded good.
