It’s hard to compare a camera phone to a compact camera, especially when the P20 pro is £800 and the camera is £330.

Actually phones are not that great for cameras.. I use iPhone X and I can tell you that a basic canon m3 camera that I’ve used is way better. Indoor photos with the phone always look dull and dark. Whereas a a good lens with good aperture, will give you a great bright photo with great detail. Plus you can’t do bokeh on videos with phones

M2 is 5 years old now and not much of a price drop since it was released. Cameras for vlogging are only going up in price at the minute as they are so popular.

I agree with most of your sentiments, however dual lens cameras on phones provide a nice bokeh effect

That's actually a very silly comment since most camera comparisons I've seen suggest the camera ranks below the top dogs.

The only good thing about its images is the ability to zoom way further in.

In terms of actual quality, colours and exposure especially, I was very underwhelmed.
I don't see why you would get this when an lx10 is only 60 quid more expensive

If you want to go for any of the "reputable" sellers then you get £50 cashback ontop of all those prices, eBay (who I consider reputable) currently have a few sellers brand new below £400, and only the other day it was 450 something from Amazon (albeit on backorder) but you could add the cashback ontop of that.

I’d take a RAW shot from the one-inch sensor and Zeiss glass from this any day of the week. If you want bokeh make it from genuine DoF.

Phone cameras gave a long way to go. They’re stuck due to going the thin route so have reached a plateau due to physical size requirements for larger/better sensors which give better depth of field and signal-to-noise ratio. Hence the push on dual lenses, depth sensing, post-processing, fake bokeh, etc.

That said, I wouldn’t go for this model. Mk 3 onwards got a better f1.8-2.8 lens (albeit less reach) which is brighter for low light so used is where I’d look if this is your budget.

However, the 4K from the Mk4 and Mk5 is stunning (downsampled from 5K). The Mk5 adds phase detection for rapid AF and is my travel camera of choice for stills and video.
Don't feed the troll! Don't feed the troll!
This is a good camera, but having had the Mark 2 and Mark 3 I feel like the Mark 3 is a much better camera all round. Don't be put off by the price versus age of these cameras. The Sony RX line is superb and has aged extremely well.

You do realise this camera has a 1 inch sensor don't you? That's very large for a compact camera. This will blow away any phone no matter what it is.
I got mk3 like new from amazon before Christmas for £300 after cashback It's a great camera. I've had mk1 before
I have had three Sony cameras for a few years now. They are very good. I have a full frame & A6300. My pocket one the HX60 has a smaller sensor than this one but takes great photos. All the Sony cameras have great special effects, one of my favourites being the 'select colour'. If you sellect red you can take a photo of a red phone box & only that will be red, the rest is black & white, all in an instance. You can do the same with blue, green & yellow, your imagination is the only limit. However I have just bought one of the Panasonic DC-TZ90 pocket cameras. It was a refurb at around £225-00. It doesn't have the 'select colour' feature but others instead, my main reason to buy it was the 4k video. For such a small sensor the videos come out really really well & a good still photo can be captured from it. The 30 times zoom with video is really steady, & I have taken great stills from a 4k video at the 30x zoom, thats saying something. Horses for courses.
I've had a good few Canon & Sony cameras and currently use the RX100 IV as my compact, and I have to say it's easily the most fun to use of any camera I've ever had. Very compact and discreet but packs a powerful punch with a 1" sensor, RAW, ZEISS lens, and easy-to-access full manual control. Bring it anywhere, take amazing photos.

Don't believe everything your guide dog barks at you.
Great little camera! Been using the RX100 range for years and they are great for the price. However this particular model been out for a while and price has not dropped much. Might be worth spending a little bit more and getting a later version.
The RX100 range is awesome. I bought a RX100 mark iii from Amazon Warehouse deals in 2016 for £270.00 !!
Deal of the century

It's been a long time since using an SLR, what is the difference between this and Sony Cybershot HX80? They look identical.
The RX100 is a very well rated camera among many even pro-photographers. It has a large (1 inch) CMOS sensor so will be good in low light. Yes it expensive for a compact camera but you get what you pay for and reviews for these cameras back that up

The Sony E mount cameras are excellent bigger APS sensor, but the kit lens is average on the 5100 model. A good E mount zoom lens is not cheap. Also no viewfinder, personal preference but I need a viewfinder. I chose to take my RX100 iii over my Sony Alpha SLT(SLR) camera to Malaysia and took a gamble. But I am glad I did, overall carrying a pocket camera paid off, the portability being one, it never let me down in day or night shots. For a 1" sensor camera, its awesome.

The RX100 series use substantially larger sensors, significantly better lenses, and have a far greater range of functionality and manual control. They're substantially more powerful cameras with significantly better image quality, at the expense of zoom range.

As a quick illustration, here's a 1 inch sensor like you'd find in an RX100, compared to the 1/2.3” sensor you find in conventional compacts;

The main reason to go for a premium compact over an interchangeable lens system is size- the RX100 system gets you pretty close to SLR quality images and still fits in a jeans pocket. I actually sold my £2000+ of mirrorless gear to downsize to an RX100 IV because I travel for a living and after two years got tired of having to constantly lug a bag around or have it slung over my shoulder all the time.

Great camera, I've had one for almost four years, I've now upgraded a bit to the a6500. As others have said the main difference would be how compact the RX100 line is, my girlfriend has one so I use it now and again. I'd only get the a5100 if you want to move into trying new lenses etc, some of the sigma primes are small, cheap and good to learn new techniques with. TBH though if I was to go back I'd have got the a6000 as it has a viewfinder and extra controls. If you want to use different lenses etc. then you'll probably want a viewfinder and those extra controls. If I see a deal on the RX100iii (has viewfinder and faster lens) though I'll probably buy it just so I can take it everywhere.
Meh, I got the 1st model from Amazon warehouse like new for 180.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep eye out for RX100 3, the RX100 2 may just suit my needs though I've always had trouble seeing display panels in bright conditions so may consider the model with viewfinder. Thanks for your help everyone
