Sony DAB alarm clock radio at Argos for £39.99

I nearly bought this when it was £69.99 and it's still this price in the Sony store. All the reviews are good and after hearing the sound quality on a demo model in Comet I wanted one.

Set your desired alarm - wake to a tone or digital radio. This Sony DAB alarm clock radio provides great sound quality. Dual alarm feature which is ideal if there are two of you getting up at different times. Clear LCD display which makes it easy to read radio station names and the time.

i bought mine off argos on ebay last year for £29.99 and well pleased an excellent alarm,, can set alarm for once, weekdays, weekends which is good option and dab is good sound as well

VERY GOOD ALARM I got mine for the same price in John Lewis a few years ago.

Amazon review - 3 stars:

Nice looking and a great radio but BADLY thought out as an alarm. Buttons … Nice looking and a great radio but BADLY thought out as an alarm. Buttons are sloped away from you so using in low light almost impossible - lighting is AWFUL - being too bright so that to see it during the day you need it on max then at night it's like having a torch on next to your bed. So, looks good and radio good but badly designed as a bedside clock alarm.

Why do all these DAB radio/alarms have such a bright display that puts an annoying glow into the room ?
Even 30 years ago radio alarms had auto dimming.

Exactly. imo the best colour for night is red numbers. Perhaps they're scared that would look too retro...

I have taken back several DAB clock radios because the display was too bright but I can dim the display on this to a setting where I can still read it but it does not keep me awake.

The latest DAB radio alarm i keep thinking about buying, is one i see in my local Asda for under £20.
But i just know it'll be yet another i'll have to return because of the stupidly bright display.

Possibly..... but over the years i've also had them with green and blue LED digits, these didn't light up the room at night either.

yup, agree, display way too bright, we have one.......

Got it for free off coke zone, it is pretty good I don't think it's that bright... you can turn down brightness too

good buy if you are after one, but i personally dont bother with dab or any normal radios now. had a dab but didnt get enough stations for my liking. then went to a dab/wifi radio which was good until it died & couldnt get a replacement for under £100!

i now use my ipod touch & its far better than any of them! i have it in a dock & use an app called tunein radio which allows me to listen to basically any station in the world as well as podcasts, bbc iplayer & can record programs

Older stock may have a bug that makes the alarm go off at 00:00. Something to look out for (taken from a review on Amazon):

Whilst there is a possibility that there may be some earlier versions in stores, which may encounter this issue, I would like to advise that the modified units can be identified by a black dot next to the bar code on the box".

Never understand why people buy a DAB radio (for CD quality radio), but put up with Mono speaker! Go for 2 speakers and have that new fangled thing they call Stereo sound!!!

Stereo needs your ears to be in the right place to appreciate it, it's not like your heads going to be square on to it all the time to actually hear the stereo separation. My mono kitchen DAB doesn't feel like it's inferior to my stereo clock radio.

For the same reason it's why I think trying to get stereo sound from two XMI speakers is a wasted effort unless your in the correct position to hear it, unlike earbuds etc.

Why? As Nookster said there isnt much point.

Confused by the conflicting reports of the brightness.
Some say it's too bright and lights up the room at night and some mention it's okay because it can be dimmed. Could it be that those who say it's too bright just didn't find the dimmer function???

Need a new alarm clock, doesn't need to be anything fancy, but don't want it to be lighting up the room while I try and sleep. Got a Pure Tempus, but that's rubbish as an alarm clock - it's either off and needs touching to show the time, or it lights up the room even on the lowest setting.

i have one also, brightness is not even an issue, on the lowest setting its perfect

Your new here aren't you?

I will list for you the brands that are held sacred around here, you would be advised not to speak ill of any of them in future.

Here is the list as promised :
Onkyo
Panasonic
Sony
and of course, who could forget...alba

I may have forgotten a couple but you'll pick those up in time.

does this have a remote control?

I have this exact model and it has the dreaded 'Going off at midnight' problem. If you research it on the net you'll see that it's a common problem. My advice would be to steer well clear of this if you value a good nights sleep! AWFUL product!

I expected to be ignored. Buy at your peril.

The best display I have seen for auto dimming is the logitech squeezebox radio. It is a wifi radio but you can play a number of build in alarm sounds if you are scared that it won't go off. If you already have a phone with an oled display you should try an application called "bedside pro". It dims the screen really well, mutes the phone (you can set an allowed number list) and you can set it to wake you up via alarm or Internet radio. Both the options I suggested are much more expensive than this but I got so fed up with having to return badly designed products with glowing displays and I had the phone anyway.

This looks like a good price for a DAB clock radio and what makes it better is that it isn't a slave to iPhone! Have some heat.

Got this about 2 years ago, signal isn't perfect and never has been with selected channel's but still going strong. I paid £20-25 from ASDA, would never pay £40 for it.

But then you cant see it during the day, and it does not auto adjust....

Thanks - think I'll hunt out an auto-dimming one.

Ordered 1 and left heat. cheers! Why does everyone moan so much on HUKD, buy it or don't. SIMPLES!

Because it would be a boring site if people just voted hot, or ignored a deal.
There is a forum here to discuss deals and discuss the item in that deal......... if you dont like that, then dont read it SIMPLES.

No, but I do venture in now and then, and listen to music in my bedroom.

I know, still got a 30+ years old PYE one beside my bed now.

Thanks OP, got one for myself today (have not unpacked it yet).
I received the newer 706 model which should not have the 'midnight alarm' issue and it should also have 4 alarms. AFAIK the older 705 model has the 'midnight alarm' issue and only has 2 alarms.

Totally agree - if you've got home WiFi make the most of it - internet radio is the business

Thanks... bit too expensive. Gone for this Roberts in the end at £18 as not really that fussed about it being DAB.
Reviews seem to suggest it doesn't go off at midnight and doesn't light up the room at night! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41ZzEP1SxrL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
