this seems like a good deal I cant find any reviews on it. I find it hard to believe that this has a usb port at this price without being on sale?

What’s the problem with having USB! It means you can use it as a high quality Webcam.

Already posted me thinks ]here

While hard drives and DVDs are more convenient tape has high capacity and therefore less compression of the data.

Depends what bit rate you need and the quality you require of your footage, DVD is a low bit rate, can't fully recall but it's around 5-6 Mbit / sec but dv is 25 Mbit / sec. ...get more bits get a better picture. I use dv tapes all the time, don't recall any of them sucking at any point :-D

Yeah, tape is very good for archiving.

If the Sonys I've used over the years are anything to go by, this is an great deal.

Sony camcorders have always been among the best in low light, and MiniDV, while no longer the most convenient format for people that get headaches when they have to attach a cable to anything, is still an excellent, well-supported format.

DV quality still stands as some HDD (Hard Disk) ones do not work out what they were described

Can you please explain this? Mini DV offers higher quality that is stored in an uncompressed format making it easier to edit. DVD is compressed from the start resulting in the immediate loss in quality. The only real advantage with DVD is the ease of play back.

 agreed, exactly why I paid £250+ for a Sony MiniDV DCR-HC47 few months ago, i like quality over ease and I'm already used to recording from Hi-8, MiniDV compared though is blissfully easy.

The irony of complaining about using tape is that only now are HD camcorders that use other media (HDD etc) starting to match the quality of tape based HD camcorders. I know the difference is that the tape based camcorders use the older HDV CODEC rather than the newer AVCHD but I still find it amusing.

Of course tapes are less convenient but I can live with that if the quality is better.
If I was going to complain about a medium it would be DVD.

I have the 51E, it's my first digital camera after an old sony finally starting playing up after 12 years, pictures seem great but am now gutted the 53 is cheaper as I still haven't got round to installing a firewire card I purchased for the PC ........USB would have been so much easier !

is 53e better than 40e?

Ordered today thanks for timely post

I purchased this camcorder, but am having difficulties in connecting to my laptop which is running Vista Home Premium.

The laptop just does not recognise the camcorder, I have updated the Sony software etc but still no luck, just shows "cannot find the handycam, check i.link connection". Connected properly with i.link/firewire but still no connection.

Any advice/assistance much appreciated as I go abroad for a long period early next week.
