Quality camera. I got this the last time it was posted with PC world price match and reduction. Took it out last weekend and got some amazing images. I will try and post them when I have time.

Don't know if i should go for this or the D40 :-(

If ]this for £299 is the same model at PC World you could presumably collect at store and save an extra £5 odd.

I'd go with this. The D40 is crippled by not having a motor drive for af lenses - so you can only auto focus with AF-S lenses. Same with D60 and D40X, this limits your options quite a bit.

As I understand it this will use all the old (cheap but good) minolta lenses.

But the chances are that i'll only use the kit lens or maybe one that I can get half price that has an AF motor bult in in Jessops.

dont forget that none of these lenses are anywhere as good as the kit Zuiko lens on the Olympus e series.....

The D40 not having a motor in body is really only a problem if you already own older lenses. The D40 is excellent.
But on topic the A200 is a great price.

none of these are as good as an e-510

The e-510 with the basic 14-42mm lens is over £100 more than this .. so is hardly a fair comparison.

If you're recommending someone spend that money, I would say that the Canon 400d takes some beating.

If I were to offer any advice for those that don't own a digital slr I would recommend people try these cameras out at somewhere like Jessops, get a feel for them, see what they are like to hold and use. You'll know what you're comfortable with, don't be swayed by the price alone.

is it true what i have seen that amazon are starting to ban you if you make a lot of refunds returns ??

A Fiat Brava is not as good as a BMW which is not as good as a ferrari....... What is the point?

The Olympus DSLRs use much smaller sensors than the Sonys.

Very good advice there!

I went out to try the A100 but it was so bulky compared to the D40 I tried afterwards whom I pretty much fell in love with instantly!

I agree - try them in jessops - but check on camerapricebuster.co.uk for mainstream prices.

I disagreee that the D40 lack of motor is only a problem if you have old glass. Look at the lens line up.

The sony here has built in IS and sensor cleaning - which puts it ahead of the D40 / 400 in my book.

I have an oly 510 but the sony would have been my next choice.

Some pictures I took this week with my A200 + 55/200 Tamron lens:

Cheers.

For those thinking that the Nikon D40/60 has limited lens options I think you're thinking very backwardly. The best new lens on the market (the Sigma 18-200mm OS) is only available on Nikon and Canon. This limits all other cameras. For this reason, I would not buy anything else just yet.

My girlfriend would like credit for one or two of the posted images...;-)

if it's the 1 lens travel solution you want

i'm happy to bet a sony alpha with the sony/tamron 18-250mm will beat your canikon + sigma 18-200mm combo for both image quality and range

edit

i used a sony a350 + sony 18-250mm for most of my holiday shots ]http//ww…4/ while i do have sharper lenses, the image quality for a hyperzoom is unmatched. When you also add in the image stablisation from the sony alpha body no other mount has a better 1 lens solution.

The colouring on the D40 seems to be very over produced, quite vivid. Which does not seem to be very natural. The sony range seem to have a true to life colouring too them. For that reason Nikon D40, you are out!

P.S. 10.2MP gives you so much more!

This is a good price. but you can get it even cheaper.. you can get your local PCworld to price match this price. they will give you 10% the difference too. Its selling for 299.99 at PCworld AND you get it today too!! thats an extra 5 quid saving.

Possible quidco too if you resevere and pick up via their Website. !

actually, only slightly smaller,

but zuiko lenses are canon L series quality, and come as standard on olympus cameras

i know , i just tested some out today,

flickr.com/pho…04/

interesting that most people getting into SLRs dont seem to realise the gulf in quality between good lenses and the tat kit lenses supplied by canon ,, sony , and to a lessor extent nikon.

dont worry about sensor sizes, pixel count, etc etc , no one makes a poor slr body these days, but the lenses on the other hand can be complete tat.

good price! but don[t like it
