I bought this camera few weeks ago.. what a great camera!! feels very good on your hands compared to other rivals..
* 10.2 effective megapixel CCD sensor plus optimised BIONZ processor for enhanced picture quality, reduced image noise and responsive operation
* High sensitivity up to ISO3200 with high-ISO noise reduction for successful handheld shooting in low light without flash
* D-Range Optimiser adjusts brightness and contrast for beautifully-exposed backlit scenes
* Enhanced Super SteadyShot image stabilisation offers 2.5-3.5 steps anti-shake performance with all α-mount lenses
* Large 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD with easy-to-use function display and percentage battery life indicator
* Improved 9-point centre cross AF with EyeStart activation for fast, accurate focusing
* Continuous shooting at 3fps (JPEG Fine mode, limited by memory card capacity)
* High-capacity InfoLITHIUM battery allows up to 750 shots between charges (CIPA measurement)
* Dual anti-dust system protects sensor during lens exchange
And the price is very low and got so many cool features than the rival DSLRs.
By the way Nikon uses a sensors made by SONY
enjoy!!!

Thanks to Brightgeezer for finding out that the price has gone down further.

good features, great entry level DSLR!

I also have this camera and it does rock. Mine cost abit more but at anything under 300 this is a great deal.
Remember to get some large memory so you can use the raw feature

Cool options yes, but picture quality not great according to independent tests. Especially the standard lems isn't good. Having to get a better lens makes this not such a bargain. Read reviews here:

There are also other problems inherited from Konica such as the propriator flash shoe, etc, and then of cause the expensive Memorystick. As you probably have guessed by now I don't like Sony cameras.

You might want to post a link to a bad review if you are trying to put people off it rather than one that highly recommends it!

Therefore it just earns our Highly Recommended badge.

It takes CF cards too mate.......and the 10.2 censer is the same one Nikon use cos Sony make them for Nikon.. That includes the more expensive Nikon's.

The 18-70 is about on par with ALL Kit lenses, so to say that initial cost and the purchase of a better lens would not actually make it a good deal, probably applies to KIT lenses sold by ALL Dslr manufacturers making the initial cost very good indeed going on what you said. The Canon 400D for instance is a good £100 more than the Sony and its KIT lens is on par with the 18-70 supplied by Sony with this model.

As for reviews, this camera produces great pictures according to most of the review sites and forums we have checked. Based on price this really is a Bargain. We didn't just go to the well known photographic sites for mags and places like what camera e.c.t

And just in case you think I'm a Sony enthusiast........I own a Canon.

No I think that this model at that price is a bargain and vote it HOT

well, clearly you haven't used one - it doesn't use a memory stick, it uses compact flash. and seeing as the review on that site gives it a "Highly Recomended" rating, then independant reviewers also seem to be quite fond of the camera.

The lens isn't perfect, but anyone expecting a Carl Zeiss quality lens on a budget DSLR kit is asking a bit much. The lens supplied does a good job covering basic needs.

I've heard people complain about the noise when it's shooting on high ISO (particularly ISO 3200), but seeing as most other cameras don't actually go up to ISO 3200, that seems a little unfair to the sony. And anyone who has a problem with the Noise reduction - just turn it off, shoot on RAW, and you'll be sorted.

It's a good budget camera, at a decent price, with nice features - and a pain in the ass menu system. but if you can cope with that, it's well worth it.

My fault, should have linked to the lense review instead:

So the 18-70mm finds itself in a slightly uncomfortable position, as an aging design with insufficient resolution for the latest cameras. It simply can't match the optical quality of the other manufacturers' kit lenses, and has become the limiting factor in overall image quality when paired with Sony's new DLSRs.

This, imo, is not a good review.

this lens is not aimed at pro's... for an amateur this lens is great to start with and then move on to a better lens later on.... or you buy some minolta lenses from ebay for less which would do better...
i hope you surely don't think that other DSLR kit lenses provide same quality as Carl zeiss optics..
memory card you can use CF

It actually says that it isn't a great lens and buyers of the 350 wouldn't find it any different to using it with a 300, as this camera is the 200 it will be fine. If you are going to just pick bits from a review then

The slightly extended telephoto range compared to other manufacturers' equivalents is welcome for portrait work, and it must be said that in some areas this lens performs very well; it's unusually resistant to flare, and shows very little light falloff towards the corners of the frame even wide open at 18mm.

not that bad at all.

You might not be a sony fan but considering you don't even know what type of memory card it uses, it might be an idea to do a little research before posting how bad they are.

thanks for that - didnt know you could search by camera! guess it depends on the lenses more than anything though so won't be influenced too much by it!

Great value at this price. I paid just under the £300 mark and thought that was good value.

Voted hot!

So the camera doesn't use Memorystick and propriator flash hotshoe then??? Very confusing your feedback. One other thing I forgot to mention is the extremely loud shutter/mirror noise, so don't use this camera in quite environments or for animal observations.

Nobody actually needs a DSLR to take good pictures but if you want DSLR over prosumer small sensor quality (I presume that's why you buy a DSLR), than there are definately better (and sometimes cheaper) cameras out their and certainly with better expandebility than the Sony/Konica models. That's just my opinion of course and there's no reason to get upset.

I'm not getting upset at all, just pointing out that you said the memory sticks were expensive, you can use CF cards which are no more expensive than any other form of memory. You link to a review that said it was highly recommended, and the lens review that said it was a decent enough lens at that end of the scale.

We could argue all day about which camera is best but it comes down to what you like. You haven't recommonded any other camera either, but I guarantee whichever camera you like in this price bracket, there will be bad points about it.

Good price, but Sony DSLRs can be a little noisy.

I went for a Canon 400D instead when they recently did £45 cashback (only ended up costing me £300).

If you can, I'd get a Canon for £299 from Sainsbury's as posted on here earlier.

The Sony gets good reviews, so it's a hot vote from me, even though if I was buying again I would get another Nikon D40. Horses for courses... I would say for anyone thinking about getting a DSLR, to hold it in your hands and try it before buying though.

It has been quite a debate about Sony A200k and Nikon D40, even more now when they are nearly same price. Both entry level DSLRs, but with Sony with some better specifications. And somehow people still say Nikon does better pictures.
I still haven't decided yet. Maybe a bigger price drop will help

This is a great deal for a good camera

Can't afford anything like this right now, but I got ]this deal back in the day.. the lens is compatible? how does the lens compare to the one sold with this camera?

If it was only another £50 cheaper i could afford this

I've seriously been considering this but in all my review reading I've just realised that it doesn't have a live mode feature (I know I know, how unprofessional) but hey. Still uber hot at this price, it may twist my arm!

yes it doesn't I'm waiting for the A350K (which has live view) to come down a bit

Is live view really that important on a big dSLR?

Just to correct an inaccurate bit of info in an earlier post, the more expensive Nikon's don't use same sensor(that's how you spell it!) as this Sony. Yes a lot of Nikon's do use Sony sensors, but for example different model Nikon's have used CCDs and some have used CMOSs, and not all were made by Sony, some they made themselves.

Also the low light / noise performance levels of the Nikon D3/90/300/700 obliterate into dust anything under the Sony A700. The rumoured D3X and Sony A900 however are reported (if true) to use the same 24.4mp sensor, but they won't be close to 300....

All that said i'm sure the A200 makes a decent entry level dSLR.

Agreed, but to add some balance, the Nikon models you mention are all £1000+ I think, so its not really a fair comparison to a £260 camera.

Warehouse Express do price match with 10% discount if that helps anyone.

I own this camera and can vouch for it!

I ordered one of these from Dixons. Got the Camera and Lens Kit plus a Sandisk Ultra II SD Card and a Lowepro UK Altus 160 bag for £289.99.

I bought this for £264 from Dixons the last time it was posted here and it's a fantastic camera. I researched it extensively online before ordering and read many, many positive reviews... I wouldn't have got one otherwise.

The kit lens isn't the most amazing but then only an idiot would expect something incredible at this price. I'll qualify that by saying that in my experience it takes very good pics and I love the macro mode. I bought an M42 lens adaptor off Ebay for about 6 quid to widen my second hand lens options and plan on getting a decent telephoto at some point.

If you're looking for an entry level DSLR then you wont regret this, especially at this price. By the way, the live view always used to annoy me on my Samsung compact and it was a pain having to turn it off all the time. I no longer have that problem :-D

Good price, if I didn't already have a A100 I would be grabbing one.

Remember unlike some other cameras in this thread you can use any AF lens going way back into the 1980's! So keep an eye on ebay. Good lenses to move on to after the base one are the 50mm F1.7 and 70-210mm f4 "Beercan".

I seriously doubt you would miss it once you have got used to it. I know I didn't. Live view is the last thing that would persuade me to buy any particular camera from any manufacturer...

I've had the A100 for a couple of years now and I love it. I'd like to point out some points not yet made..

1) Image Stabilisation - All the Sonys have this in body which means every lens is stabilised.
2) Shutter noise - yes the A100 has a noisy shutter but the A200 doesn't.
3) The proprietary hot shoe - [B]ALL/B] the manufacturers have their onw flash units. One big plus of the Alpha (inherted from minolta) is the wireless flash. Take a Minolta or Sony unit, unplug it, stick it on a table and voila - instant creative effects. Add more flashes as you see fit.

Yes, I may be a bit of a Sony fanboy, but they picked up a good legacy from Minolta and have improved on it.
