Dumb question but what's a head unit used for?

For ~20 year old cars to replace the manufacturer cassette deck.

Most cars in the last 15 or so years have had integrated satnav/entertainment systems which you need to get a facia plate if you want to replace them with a more up to date Twin ISO unit.
Keep away from a car stereo without Bluetooth.
Shame the main usb port appears to be on the front. If its the only way to connect a device would be better coming out the back surely?
is it 1990?

They generally all have USB ports at the front. Why would you want it at the back?

Not if you just want something to play music, like car stereos have been doing for decades.

I dont know about you but i would much orefer not to have wires hanging out the front of my radio and strewn all over the dash making it look even cheaper. Usb on the rear would mean you could neatly mount a usb connection somewhere else in the dash trim eg the glovebox or centre console making for a more oe neat finish.
Whats Bluetooth.

It's for USB flash drive with MP3 files - you don't want to remove stereo every time you want load more music, right?

The stereo in my Micra doesn't have BT & it's a bit of pain as I have to find somewhere to park when wanting to make/receive a phone call. I personally would never buy one without BT now.
To be ultimate car stereo it must take mini disc
... and be a pull out

They'll still ask for extra money for the facial kit which they'd probably sell for extortionate price.

I used to fit car audio for my friends. It was great fun fitting all them amps and speakers

Keep away from a car stereo without Bluetooth.

Why? Are they dangerous?
I had one of these in my last car, I really couldn't stand the user interface on it, especially when trying to browse and play music from a USB stick.
Thanks for posting. We have added this thread to the Highlights pages
This is a quality upgrade if you have an older car and the stereo is giving up the goat. Bluetooth would be nice so you don't have to faff about with cables but hey.. That's what FM transmitters are for!

Heaven forbid you actually have to listen to the radio! Imagine listening to the same terrible top 5 songs, constant ads / "chat" portions and doesn't even pause when you have to jump out!
Does it stack with trade card?
Looks horrible but fair price

It’s caused by cleaning teeth with toilet duck

Funnily enough I still have an Aiwa portable Mini Disc player which I could plug into the audio input on my car stereo if I wished to....

You'd generally be better off using a Bluetooth receiver plugged into the Aux port, than using an FM transmitter. At that point however, just get one with Bluetooth built in!

True enough, just be sure to get one which can be powered, as opposed to battery operated. Some of those don't enjoy being charged and "on" at the same time.

Although quality bluetooth head units still carry an absurd premium..

I believe in this case, it means 30 quid extra for the same stereo but with a CD slot.
Just fit mini usb stick into the front, they only stick out about 5cm, if it fits in back its pain to take out to update your music...
IKve got something similar in my truck. I plug a cable into it and into my iphone. Plays music and charges the phone. Calls come through the car speakers (it isnt Bluetooth either) and you can sort of take a call but not have a long chat. Enough to pullover and pick the phone up.
Waiting on a double din with Bluetooth to replace my medianav thing in the Dacia. Fed up sounding like a fish on phonecalls 👌

Think this is just paying for someone to install it for you at Halfords. A £30 installation fee.

Pull out head units back in the day... pop into glovebox for added security! ah those memories
Put the music on a USB stick and plug it in.

Why do you need Bluetooth?

It's always cutting out anyway.
