Do these types of stereo still fit in modern day cars?

Do these types of stereo still fit in modern day cars?

Varies from car to car; I think there's a car compatibility check on the Halfords site.. but before you bother doing that considering you said "modern" car—I'm assuming you may have steering wheel controls (volume etc). If you do, forget about getting this as a cheap upgrade, it's an extra £40 at least to buy another component that enables steering wheel controls to work with these type of aftermarket systems.

Depends on the car.
Need a double din to come down in price!

Can confirm. Bought the missus a system like this for her Yaris, along with the mounting bracket and whatnot. Her steering wheel controls are long gone, needed an extra bit to make them work.

To get this to fit in a proper modern day car (say, 2015+), I imagine you’d have to rip out half the centre console and replace it with 3rd party custom moulds to make it sit nicely.
Have the exact one but the non-DAB version in my Ford Puma. Great bit of kit. Connects Bluetooth quick and does the job well.
This going from assembly line straight into the museum. Shame these classic car stereos are disappearing from the market

Still plenty of older cars around. It is a shame its not easy to upgrade, but it stops the problem of idiots putting a brick through your window to rip out your stereo.

Meanwhile back in 2012 Volkswagen didn't include neither Bluetooth or Aux in in there standard vehicles
Heat added for the price, shame there's no CD player as I'm looking to swap out the stock head unit in my mum's MR2 for her birthday. There's not a chance she'll figure out how to drive a USB stick of MP3s.

I don't understand why the display on the cheaper ones still looks like a Casio calculator. They've not moved on since the 1990s. I had a Pioner 6900 (I think?) in about 2006 that had a full pixel display and I guess you'd have expected the tech to have filtered down.
no Bluetooth no CD for this price? not really hot!

Below £100 you seem to sacrifice Bluetooth or DAB. I picked up a Pioneer 8700DAB which has it all for £100 in a Halfords clearance but that seemed to be an exception.

Lack of Bluetooth is a disappointment.

CD's though.. why do they still exist? They won't be around much longer surely.

Yeah she’s got a roadster, she had mine for a week after some repairs and was hooked so went and bought one (even the same damned colour).

Thanks for the recommendation but only looking to spend about £50. I’ve already bought the single DIN conversion fascia so just on the hunt for a cheap head unit with CD, a volume knob and preferably DAB

Didn't realise they are quite so hard to find with a CD player.....stacks on Gumtree if you are stuck, wouldn't normally buy 2nd hand but picked up a great Sony unit for the Rav4 ages ago for £20 boxed, still going strong (the older ones are better made anyway)

I've got my eyes on one on eBay that's boxed never used. Was shocked (although I guess not surprised) as to how many folk are peddling 10-15 year old ones on Facebook for £20 odd quid.

Sounds like you found a diamond in the rough at least.

Would have settled for a DEH-P77MP as I think that would be idiot proof for her but they're still going for what I sold mine for in 2006!
But no Bluetooth

Its a turn of phrase. You understand the sentiment I was driving at.

Pioneer did or still do make great stereos.
I had deh p8250 and was overwhelmed at the quality and craftsmanship that was put into it. Never seen anything close to the display 17 years on.

Tbh that unit I put in the MR2 is good but the settings on it are ridiculous (don't know what half of them are for lol)...with not using the car all the time it's easy to forget how to work it.

I could have kicked myself, I bought a trickle charger for my MR2 while it was garaged over the winter (needed to do some work on it too). Thought great, I won’t need to arse on with reinputting all the stereo settings.

Went to install the quick disconnect loom for the trickle charger, loosened the main negative terminal, and heard the noise of the alarm siren beeping at the power being cut instantly knew what I’d done lol

It's not just steering wheel controls, my car stereo is also the control unit for a bunch of the cars settings. To replace it i have to get a canbus thingy and if I want double din I've got to move the LCD display part to somewhere like the glove box.. sometimes i miss the 90's

For Golden Oldies like me lol.
I only buy music on cd so that I can play it on my CD player in my hi-fi system.

What are your suggestions should I want to "upgrade"?

You may think that CDs are history but they said the same about vinyl many moons ago.
I believe that that is one of the few forms of music source that is expanding.

BTW what will you do when your USB, or whatever you store your music on, implodes?

Good on you my friend! No harm in that.

I certainly do not feel that CD is history, but its viability is certainly diminishing in the digital era as streaming popularity increases and less and less physical CD's are being sold.

Personally I abandoned CD's many years ago in favour of mp3s, and I'm slowly contemplating the switch to streaming only. In the car I have a bluetooth head unit with USB and I have a low profile £5 USB stick plugged in to it with a hundred or so of my favourite tracks. My full music library (roughly 80gb) is on an external hard drive, backed up by another offline external drive, backed up by another USB stick. Implosions are certainly insured against.

Vinyl still persists as it's a niche market for enthusiasts alike, I don't personally think CD's will hold the same appeal but only time will tell!

I use mainly USB sticks but often CD's. Would much rather have a cd player than bluetooth. Can't see the obsession with bluetooth to be honest, much easier to just stick everything on a usb stick, or burn your own mp3 cd.

I don't use bluetooth for music in the car personally, I use a USB stick like yourself. The only use for the bluetooth on my head unit is for any hands free calls on mobile, incoming calls are routed to speakers and microphone.
Also to note anyone buying this will need to buy an extra aerial for the radio.
I have one similar to this installed in our Civic. We opted for the DAB version, but when realising we would have liked Bluetooth also - We simply opted for a device like THIS. It fits perfectly in a U-shape from the USB port to Aux right next to it.
