For the first time you can now see your digital photos on CD or DVD as they were meant to look on your High Definition TV. Sony's DVPNS78H DVD player supports HD photo slideshow output so you can view your images at five times the resolution previously available - quality that makes the most of your HDTV and, of course, your photographic talents!

would it play HD DVD?

It upscales normal DVD's very well to 1080p if your TV supports it.

Excellent reviews too, the only downside is finding the multi-region hack,

Fill in the blanks - starts with F. Meaning that Sony players are normally more expensive than other brands. It definitely is the cheapest deal for this and I'd think it's difficult to find a same spec known brand so voted hot! In fact this also play DivX files so this is indeed a bargain!

Pravinjha - it is not capable of playing HD DVD discs. Add-on drive for the XBox 360 does HD DVD for £90ish? Otherwise the ]Tosh HD-EP30 for £205 is recommended.

No you would need a HD player to play HD movies!

I have one of these bad boys running on a 55 inch Sony Bravia and it is superb, the quality is first rate and in some respects this superb quality playback makes Blue Ray and HD a bit of nonsense especially when you consider the premiums you are expected to pay for those formats!

I paid £80 for the region free version of this player a couple of months ago and I thought that was a great price but for £50 (ok its R2) what are you waiting for it is an absolute bargain!

with the money your saving treat yourself to a good HDMI cable and away you go!

There is a lot of debate about upscaling players and whether they bring any benefits at all as you're TV has to scale whatever signal it receives into its native resolution anyway (720/1080 etc etc). So it kinda boils down to which has the better quality scaling equipment? your TV or your dvd player?

All that being said, this is the cheapest I have seen for this player so voted hot.

guys does this definately play DivX files ???

I wish that when they say multiregion capable they actually tell you how to do it !

Probably because DVD recorders are more desirable as they have come down in price.

For an extra £39 more you can get a Sony RDR-GX350 which is multi-region and has a HDMI output with 1080p upscaling

I am aware that the Sony RDR-GX350 DVD recorder has only an analogue tuner but this no problem if you want to achive from a freeview PVR with hard-drive only. Perfect for Sky & Virgin customers too.

I am tempted by this too - I have a Sony DVD/Amp combined home theatre kit - so would I plug this new player into my amp so the amp could handle the audio - by digital coax etc?

Also, would the player have to do DTS etc or would that not matter because my current Sony amp would?

Thanks.
