Just ordered one of these, you get a staggering 75p quidco lol.

Just checked, this has been listed before at £149.99 at play, BUT it didn't come with the Tri-Fold cover which play still sells for £19.99 making this a better deal IMO. In the UK books over 50 years are public domain, so you could fill it from books from project gutenberg etc.

IMPORTANT FYI: Sony is releasing new models + the PRS700 (not released in the UK) is discontinued. They seem to be clearing the stock and accessories of the 505. I don't like the sound of the new one, smaller screen, also it may be a rumoured $200, but in the UK it'll probably be closer to £300.

This is an excellent offer- sadly I ordered mine from Play.com last week.
It's an excellent machine and I would definitely recommend it.
Thanks for posting.

Beware the infamous Play returns policy:

"Our returns policy is valid for 28 days from receipt of an item."

You'd think they'd make an exception of faulty goods, but be warned - they won't. Even if your E-Reader fails 5 weeks after you've received it, you're on your own!

A UK retailer wouldn't be able to get away with this because of the Sale of Goods legislation which protects consumers. Jersey has one planned, but it still isn't in place, and there's no protection at all for purchases made now.

Buy from Play only if you're prepared to use the manufacturer's warranty to deal with faults - Play won't help you at all after 28 days.

Just looked at the prices for downloading books - most are more expensive than buying retail which is just barmy.

No wonder people turn to dodgy sites !

I was hoping the price would drop below £100 by now - guess i'll keep waiting.

Too expensive when they are the same price as a notebook pc, but you can only read books on it - i know the screen isn't backlit and easier to read, but even so

(not voted either way on the deal - just venting)

Had one of these since Christmas and very happy with it. The problem with the ebooks is that they are not VAT free like the paper versions which is stupid.

I'm interested in these but is there a new VHS vs Beta, Blu-Ray vs HDDVD thing going on between the Sony and the Kindle?

I heard a rumour that the lending librarys are working on a website thing where books can be borrowed on these things.

Be very wary buying these! The price has been the same for a long time, so it isn't exactly a deal  They've now discontinued the PRS500 and the PRS700 to be replaced with the PRS300 and PRS600, as mentioned above.

Am hoping the PRS500 and 700 will drop in price now, hopefully soon

Do you watch television:whistling:

Just ignore him, hes entitled to his opinion.

I personally think he is wrong, also he is reading teh wrong books.

The books I read on my reader which i have had for nearing 2 years now are good books so good in fact that I get lost in the world the author creates. it could be written on the back of a pack of crisps for me.

These things have grear battery life and when I go on holiday next week to the US for 3 weeks instead of having to carry 10-15 paperbacks I'll be carrying my comparitively tiny reader with 200 books.
Also an amazing amount of free LEGALLY available ebooks, search for them at mobileread.com and teh Baen free library.

However it should be noted in theory the 700 will be an improvement over the 505 especially for anyone who would want to take notes or have dictionary access.

However for me the 505 is an almost perfect device well worth it at this price.

Don't feed the troll!!!

I've spend a lot of time looking into eBook readers and have reached the conclusion that there are a couple of years to wait before the technology matures and its actually worth having one. Current ones are too slow and inflexible for me. YMMV

good offer for those who want it but nothing beats an actual book to me. Id rather have hundreds of books taking up space than this. It takes the "charm" (not sure what word im looking for) out of reading for me.

what's the point of these?
good 'ol books are better and I get most of my books for ~£2.99 each

You are pretentious. 'End of'.

You seem to have problems with an awful lot of deals...

ebooks and books can happily co-exist, theyre just 2 different variations on the same media.

personally, i'll always prefer having an actual physical book over an ebook reader, it's just a personal preference. there is something about actually turning the page which makes the process more involving than just clicking a button.

i also wouldn't fancy trying to use one of these in the bath

it's like mp3s and cds, i have a substantial mp3 collection, but i am loathe to buy them from a download service, much preferring to buy the cd and rip them myself.

call me old fashioned, but i just like to have some physical representation of where my money has gone, rather than just a file sat on my hard drive.

same goes for games and movies, really.

the only downside of course is that i need a lot of shelf space

good price for the piece of kit though, but it's just not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

Or indeed, give them to a charity shop.

Or easily lend them to your gran.

Which would be fine if they were cheaper than paperbacks. They're not of course.

So yeah, that's a better arguement than Masherano's, who would if he really believe that be only reading handwritten books because otherwise it's just souless printing.

Worth noting of course that this is illegal in the UK.

Books have souls?

I'm not voting one way or the other but if these things mean that people read more books and create less co2 in doing so then great.

"Books have souls?"

Of course they do! Haven't you ever watched The Never Ending Story? Whole world in those pages! :-D

With these e-book readers can you highlight a passage and then print it off later? (For me that would be better than highlighting and post-it noting copies of plays for research, etc)

edit: It should be noted that I do not watch DVDs because I only want to have the 35mm celluloid, and I do not listen to recorded music - I hire classical musicians to sit in my kitchen whilst I make toast in my pjs. lol. Complete ar5e-trumpet.

What the hell, the new sony looks like a jetbook clone.

Can you get newspaper subscriptions on these? For example, I pay The Guardian 50p a day or whatever and I can download The Guardian newspaper onto this once a day?

And by 'these' I mean ebooks, not just this particular model.

Good point about charity shops. We need an online charity place with new laws that allow the transfer of the licence to them.

You could always offer the ebook reader to Gran for the weekend

This price point digital books is at now sets a terrible precedent. IF that price gets accepted as the market for ebooks grows, we'll be stuck with it forever more. I'd completely reject any DRM'd books, anything that isn't at least half the price of the paper version and hope others are smart enough to vote with their wallets about how they want digital books in the future.

While pompous, his argument does work for a lot of people who want that curling up with a book experience. Me, I look to the positives like having a massive collection of books, magazines, technical manuals, blogs, audiobooks and newspapers all in the space one book would take up with the ability to wirelessly snaffle up more. That easily was enough to get me to dump CD's for storing music. Everythings digital now, available in my pocket anytime I want it. That convenience factor is probably the biggest lure.

Fair use has something to say about that.

i also wouldn't fancy trying to use one of these in the bath

I use my PRs-500 in the bath all the time!

Just don't drop it would be my advice - but that goes for the paper versions too mind.....:)

I have books filling my room and I love it lol.

I would like to consider an e-reader something in the future but they have to be a whole lot better than these lousy offerings, nasty looking grey things. I want color electronic ink and I the device to be completely button free with ease up buying like the Kindle, and I want these in a device that doesn't cost me hundreds of pounds!. I mean jeez, it's a book reader, it's not a pc. Maybe in five years i'll be able to consider getting one, maybe sooner is Apple release a nice device.

Price of content is also a major factor, I see people on the Kindle forum etc saying how this and that new e-book is a bit cheaper than the hardcover, i'm thinking big deal it bloody well should be seeing as they don't have no printing costs for this version. Plus I wait for the paperback to be released six months later and get it for a fiva, or buy books 2nd hand from the carboot for 50p, so how is a ebook priced so high going to appeal to me in anyway?. Do the price of these drop to the price of a paperback after they've been out so long?, I dunno but I doubt it.

Gonna wait until this goes down a bit more, I have quite a collection of ebooks that I really would read if I had a medium in which to read them which didn't strain my eyes
