Sony FDR-AX53 4K UHD Camcorder £360 @ Amazon (Pre order)

Been looking at a 4k camcorder for a while and this is Sony's new model due next month, looks like it could be a misprice at Amazon as the only other place listing it is Jessops at £749.

Looks like it could be a great 4k camcorder and a marked improvement over the older AX33 and at this price its a steal.

Thanks..ordered... guess it will be cancelled as it is over 600 everywhere..
Ordered, you never know
Serious question and not taking the pee,why do people buy camcorders anymore ?

I would think that these days they are not very popular due to mobile phones being able to record 4K ,Gopro's and even normal compact cameras record 4K all of which are all far more portable.Im guessing the quality on something like this will be better than the devices I have mentioned but would the difference really justify spending the extra for such a big camera ?

4K camcorders have 1 big advantage over my Sony Z5, it doesn't warn you it is going to shut down after 5 mins due to overheating and at the end of the day for a serious filmy, a phone is a phone and erm that is it.
A camcorder is way technically superior for video shoting especially with broadcast quality.
What is fancy about this camera except the price?

All depends what you want to do. Camera phones are generally pretty good, and Gopros excellent. A camcorder such as this one would give you infinitely more flexibility in terms of zoom/wide angle, aperture to control depth of field, shutter speed to capture fast action. It should also produce better quality with less jitter, better dynamic range, better colour saturation etc.

Well I wouldn't agree that a phone is just a phone these days seeing that most videos and photos are now taken on mobile devices.

I just wonder if it won't be too long before dedicated camcorders for the consumer market will be done away with due to other devices being far more popular, where at one time if you wanted to record a video the only device was a dedicated camcorder.

Would a travel zoom camera not give you the same amount of control and quality ?
camcorder has image stabilisation system, similar to expensive photo camera lens, younever get close quality with go pro or phone

In a word no. Its a a bit like asking why are there £3,000 SLR cameras on the market - wouldn't a £50 pocket camera do the job?
It's the last thing I need, I don't even have a 4K telly, but ordered one anyway! If I change my mind I can always cancel, or sell for £500 on ebay afterwards! At this price it is definitely an error on the pricing. Pre-ordering guarantees the price so worth a punt.

How's about flexibility vs a DSLR? I've got a panasonic lumix LX100 (not a DSLR but a nice camera regardless) and am wondering what I'd gain by moving to a camcorder. Sensor and dynamic range are already pretty good, I'm guessing the main advantage would be the removal of the 15 minute recording limit.

A few months back Amazon had a roller G4 plus gimbal for pre order for £74 and everywhere else it was 400 euros, and after a long wait everyone got their gimbal despite the clear pricing error and people buying multiple units to sell on.
no 60p, only 30p in NTSC or 25p PAL

Cameras/Camcorders are about lenses, sensors, electronics, handling etc.
Just because something can shoot 4K doesn't mean it's any good.
I recommend reading up on the basics of videos and photography if you are asking such simplistic questions; no offence intended.
Thx! Just ordered

No I understand that's it's not all about resolution/pixels but what I'm saying is that the gap seems to get smaller by the day between what a dedicated camera/camcorder can do and what a more portable device can do.

Even if you use the best of the best cameras,if you are not playing the footage back on a display that can do it justice then the extra quality will probably not get noticed.

Unfortunately, no 4K cameras are capable of more than 30p unless you're willing to spend over £1000. Also, in Europe, consumer-grade cameras only do 50p which doesn't mix well in conjunction with 60 fps gameplay footage. It's a real shame.
Thanks got my order in

what are the drawbacks and advantages by shooting in ntsc 30p or pal 25p ?? Do the new 4k tv do both or we are stuck with pal only???
I just ordered one, fantastic price for a 4K camcorder that has not even been released yet and received excellent reviews at CES 2016. It has 1.6 times bigger pixels so much better low light performance than the previous excellent model. You can apparently jog and get steady shots with it due to the much improved Optical Image Stabilisation. It looks genuine enough on the Amazon web site and clearly states the 47% discount on pre-orders. Maybe one of their purchasers put an extra 0 on the order and they are keen to sell them?

In it to win it :-)
I guess there is always time to cancel...(or to think up a decent excuse for the wife).

Sensor size is nothing special - 1/2.5" . Still can't find out online if the 4k works with their IS system. Can anyone clarify?
Ordered
ordered for uncle Ebay.

Sorry, not sure about TVs, I suspect things in the UK support 25/50 rather than the American 30/60. The European standards probably only affect me since I make videos which combine camera footage with gameplay and it's best that they both have the same framerate. This camera will be great even if you don't have a 4K screen- the 1080p footage will be very clear and very, very smooth at 50/100 fps.
Booyah - 5% NUS discount also available. Pre-ordered for £342
Wow. Got one, probably just to resell it at 500. Thanks OP!
