Not bad we entry level sony, the smart system is Linux based, can't go wrong for the price, I brought a 43inch from Sony refurbished for 350, it was 4k android, with Google Assistant and trumilous display

Do non smart TVs still exist?
Not 4k? Is it better than similarly priced 4k tvs in terms of colour reproduction and contrast.

Colour and contrast on this will compatible to the cheap 4k tvs available at this price, but the advantage of this Sony will be it video procceessor will far more advanced and provide a better picture then overall.

So to answer your question cheap 4k tvs like the ones sold in argos, like Bush, celio, although maybe 4k, there upscaling off content from HD, SD sources won't be as good as say this Sony, because they use of the shelf generic video procceessors, compared to Sony well established x reality pro engine on this tv.

Ok that makes sense, x reality pro engine does get amazing reviews, makes a big difference

How do you think this would compare to a. Philips ambilight. £399 at Currys now.

I’m considering that deal but then I saw this, always been a big fan of Sony in general

If you can push your budget you go for Xg80 with android built in and trumilous display, the Philips not yet seen, so can't comment, x reality pro engine been proven to upscale and produce good pictures all the time, this is achievable because its a actual chip doing the processing, other manufacturers use software which can lead to inconsistencies in picture.
X reality pro engine Is there entry level video procceessor, but it's good as you pay more you will then get x1, x1 extreme and finally x1 ultimate, but these make a bigger difference, but they cost more too
