I don't believe an "audiophile" would consider MP3s or headphones at all...

FLAK files, wired headphones = high fidelity sound = happy audiophile.

I agree with your mp3 statement, it would be FLAC or DSD files.

Headphones are like Superbikes in the audiophile community. You can buy a DAC, headphone Amp and great headphones for far cheaper than a full on lounge setup with big speakers. £1000 vs £1000's of pounds to get the same audio quality.

I'm sure someone will rip this apart but you know what I mean.

I'm guessing this is one for the collectors as it's rather expensive for the features & capacity - thankfully they have dropped the proprietary Sony memory card and utilise a Micro SD slot instead! Heat added as this is the cheapest I have seen it!

I have got the a-35 version of this and it is superb. Battery lasts for a few days with about 6 hours use a day. The sound quality is brilliant and it works flawlessly with Bluetooth headphones.

I understand why people say that your phone does everything this does but I much prefer to save my phone battery and run this instead. And I do find playing the same mp3 on my Mate 20 pro doesn't sound as good as on my mp3 player.

What headphones would you recommend? Do I need specific ones to get the most of out this

I have a45 for about year now, and prefer using dedicated music player, I have 100gb off Flac files, and normally stream my music via Bluetooth to my speakers.
Now my phone to hold my whole music collection would be impossible, playing for hours on a smartphone would kill my battery, also the sound quality is better on my a45. This way I can use my phone and play music with the a45.

These have eu volume cap, so volume is capped when using headphones, there is a way to unlock it. I mainly use mine via the Bluetooth and stream to my wireless speaker

I am running wired Bose SoundSport ones and they sound brilliant. I also run them wireless with the Sony WH-1000XM3 and the sound from them is utterly amazing. You can control the mp3 player with the Sony's touch controls too.

Agreed - microSD is a step forward. Unfortunately it still has a proprietary data/charging cable which for me is a bit of a deal breaker. I'd be tempted otherwise.

I own one of these and think it is great; it provided a step up in sound quality compared to using my phone. I wouldn't go back.

Having said that, it is for a specific use case i.e. listening to music stored on a Micro SD (as it offers no streaming options). It supports Hi-Res as well.

For my commute, I use it with Sony WH-1000XM3 - which has the advantage of offering high bitrate LDAC over bluetooth

At home, I will listen on wired headphones; I have a pair of these (which I picked up on a mega deal thanks to this site), but there are plenty of quality options out there. Sounds amazing.

I'm tempted by this so as I can generally reduce the dependence on a smart phone.
I had one of these and they sounded no different from my iPhone. Upgraded to a AK300 and couldn't be happier.

Now need to carry my phone, a camera and a music player in my portable wardrobe.
Anyone know if these will handle huge mp3 collections? I have about 6,000 albums (92,000 tracks) in a collection that is > 500GB in size. Would this be able to handle a 512GB or 1TB SD card full of music, or would it grind to a halt when you tried to browse or search the collection?
Some people are making a bit of a song and dance about this deal
Leave the phones for calling, texting, Internet, shopping, or the odd YouTube, spotify track, or even a podcast. .....But keep the music from cd or Lp collections for decent audio players. .with any headphones or speakers...

Headfi is for people who have fallen for the "is your USB cable burned in so the sound is more cohesive and spacious" idiots. The David Ickes of the audio world. There are more sensible audio sites out there. Try a site based on measurements and competence, such as:

audiosciencereview.com/for…php

Regarding "do I need this when I have a phone" it's exactly the same as a camera or a computer. Personally I have a cheap crappy phone because to get a decent camera and audio from a phone you have to pay quite a lot and they - Android at least - stop getting supported after 2 or 3 years and I'm done with all that.

it's a good un, I'm sad Ogg never replaced silly mp3 personally
Imported my A55 to avoid the sound limiter. 256gb card in. Job done. All my music in one place. Use my phone for other stuff and no need to worry about battery. These are great for long commutes, holidays etc.

High end dude What iPhone were you using as a comparison ?
if you actually want a walkman instead of using your mobile phone for music, then the sandisk mp3 player is a much better buy and costs very little at around £25. doesn't make any sense to me to spend £115 for an mp3 player.

Thanks OP. I'll give this a go too. My Plenue D is getting a bit long in the tooth and I need a backup player after my Zune HD gave up the ghost.

Personally always found sound quality from phones to be bordering on dismal (My phones have been iPhone, Sony and Huawei) in comparison to dedicated players like this. Even Chinese cheapies which fall apart or stop playing within a month or so have better sound reproduction on MP3/FLAC than a phone

Absolutely. But Sony remains the ONLY MP3 maker that deliberately hamstrings its own players with the lunatic and dictatorial E.C. volume limitations (Choice ? You do what EC oligarchs tell you !)
That's a beautiful looking phone!

Actually quite tempted to get this tho as have quite a big FLAC library. Nice find op.
