Ever fancied curling up on the sofa with a choice of dozens of books in the palm of your hand? With the Sony eBook reader, you can. Think of this clever device as the literary equivalent of an MP3 player. Slim, lightweight and compact, it lets you store and take stacks of books with you wherever you go - you can download up to 160 books youve purchased from the internet to its memory, for reading whenever and wherever the mood takes you.

And this is how it works: the Sony eBook reader uses impressive e Ink® technology to create the look of traditional print on its 6 screen, so its just like reading real paper. Theres no backlight so theres no strain on your eyes, no flickering screen to distract you for a really relaxing read you can even take it outside on a sunny day. Thanks to the eBooks ability to play MP3 files, you can even listen to your favourite tracks as you enjoy the latest page turner.

You can bookmark pages or magnify text on a page; the eBook Reader will also remember where you last left off even if you dont!

Set up is simple - install the supplied software on your computer, connect the eBook Reader to it with the cable provided and youre ready. Its easy to create and manage your eBook library on your PC and transfer your eBooks to the eBook Reader - exactly like you do with your music on your MP3 player. The outside of the case is burgundy in colour.

Please note: Use of the Sony eBook reader requires an active internet connection (broadband recommended) for downloading new content.

I was just thinking that myself, looks so much smarter in that red, looks really nice, great price compared to retail too, still think I would personally give it a year or two before investing in one, still think they are overpriced (mainly I guess because the eink is relatively new technology) and there is a new company trying to get the image of being the Ipod of EReaders.

]http//ww…rs/ And those choices of colours really do look smart.

Imagine being able to replace a large bookshelf within a home...doesn't sound so silly then does it?

That is merely a poor photoshop mock-up, show me a real talking banana then i will be impressed :prop:

I assume you can only get the books from a Sony site (may sound a stupid question but I'm old school)

You can get them from the waterstones site. I'm not a great fan of this technology yet, the new ebooks are more expensive often than buying the book itself, the new releases are limited and i wouldn't use it to read a book in the bath using this!

Then this thread is of no importance or relevance to yourself anyway is it!?! If you don't like books...doesn't mean other people shouldn't

Keep printers in work and buy real books not these fangled things.

There are hundreds of free ebooks available online through legal methods (plus may more through "other" methods). I doubt theres enough power to electricute you should you drop it in the bath and a regualr book would bepretty screwed if it made contact with the bath water too.

This is also £149.99 at Play.com in Silver, but comes with a free cover.

play.com/Ele…nre

Yep get it off play.com with the 3 fold sleeve that comes free @ £149.99, unless you want it in red.

True but a real book doesn't cost £149! Get your books from the library, they're free!

Not for textbook type titles. In fact, the last 4 books I've had from the library I had to pay £1.50 each for!

No, loads of sites and it reads plain txt files too.

whsmith.co.uk/Cat…275

Only £147.99 plus £5 voucher.

Tempting, but I think red is a much more pleasing colour.

Unfortunately though charity shops do not sell ebooks, otherwise this would be great. Probably most ebooks will cost more than the paper versions, which does not make sense. You cannot borrow ebooks from your library.

Use Calibre to convert ebook formats

calibre.kovidgoyal.net/

I'll wait for any 4 out of these 5 before buying the Sony:
1) 2) Reading more formats (Sony promised this in their next one)
3) Good TextToSpeech (]Festival-grade speech if possible)
4) 5) Sony providing something other than MS Windows software (why is Sony so much in love with Microsoft when they've lost much gameing market-share to them). I know Calibre is available; maybe Sony should so licence it.

I do wonder when the Kindle is coming out in the UK.

The refresh in page speeds is about half a second at the very most, the one you were looking at might have been broken!

Personally I think the readers themselves are reasonably priced, but the ebooks are frustratingly expensive. Doesn't help that we have to pay VAT on them.

I've been reading 'within the next few months' on various tech sites for the past one-and-a-half years. As it's not even made it as far as Canada yet, I've a feeling we might have a little while to wait.

Unexpired

Nice work with Photoshop.
Its not the real taking banana. Its a prototype. :-D
