I've had the previous model (RDR-HXD860) for a couple of years now and love it. It's been one of the best gadgets I've bought. The freeview picture quality is loads better than the BT Vision box that I've got in the bedroom.

Looks like it can be found for a similar price elsewhere, cheapelectricals.co.uk/aca…tml (silver version) which is perhaps why they have dropped the price

got this free with my TV, i dont think its all that to be honest

Looks like an excellent price for this model to me.

Any of the voucher codes for Dixons valid for this?

Excellent piece of kit. Great for having saved all those episodes of Higgledy House for the kids, not to mention Prison Break for the big kids!!

All that what? Good? Bad? Please complete senteces in full!;-)

Argos dropped this to £150 just before Christmas. Wish I'd gone for it then. But £187.50 beats the price now so gets a warm vote... Sod it... Hot vote then!

I've been looking at getting a new DVD recorder this week as my Panasonic DMR-E50 is on its last legs

From my research I've pretty much narrowed it down to a Panasonic DMR-EX77 or the Sony RDR-HXD870 (or 970/1070)
The Sony doesn't record to DVD-RAM discs, which is a little annoying

From what I have read, the 3 Sony models are exactly the same except for the difference in hard drive size (870 = 160gb / 970 = 250gb / 1070 = 500gb // and perhaps the 770 has a 160gb that has been limited by software to only show 120gb). I also read that you can open up the device and upgrade your own drive, but not sure how complicated this would be

There's a 65 page thread on the Sony RDR-HXD870 over at AV Forums:

Apparently Argos did a deal for £149 on this recorder in December
[edit - sorry just noticed ThunderBolt mentions this above too]

Argos did the 770 before X-Mas for 149.99. It has a 120G HDD.

This 870 model has a 160G HDD, and can be in black or silver.

I stand corrected... Do you know of any significant difference?

There are no differences AFAIK apart from the disk size. I looked into it at the time and bought one (120Gb version) from Argos from my sister.

From memory...

Panasonic - can use DVD-RAM and reportedly more user friendly. Only digital tuner.

Sony - analogue and digital tuner (can only use one at a time though). Has Series Link.

There didn't seem to be a lot between the two.

The 770 actually has a 160gb hard drive inside it, but Sony limited it to 120gb. If you read on AV forums, they found a way to re-format the hard drive and reclaim all 160gb (requires a Sony service remote control).

I think the 870 at this price is a good deal - only £37.50 more than the 770 was at Xmas, and has the 160gb as standard

price now up to £209.99 on Amazon
