All well and good if your local Tesco has it at that price.

Will defo look for this at my local and let you know if I find it. Thanks.

Stupidly good price!

Will this play Divx etc??

I hope my local Tesco has one of these.

I've never owned anything like this to be honest, and was wondering, can you basically record TV then subsequently choose to burn it to DVD if you want to keep it?

Really nice pioneer based dvd recorders. The newer sony range are vastly inferior to these. If you can find one at this price you've got a major bargain.

Yes.

You probably won't find it in most tescos in the UK, i've never seen this in my store and it's reduced to clear so im assuming its going to be very store specific.

Hot anyway as it's such a good price!

Cheers for answering that for me mate :-D

I have this exact model , paid £160 for at Argos reduced from £260 , 1 year ago ,

Its awesome bit of kit and for that price you cant go wrong really !!!

Does this record freeview direct and unaltered to the hard drive then direct and unaltered onto a DVD? No weird compression or anything added etc?

I can already do this with my computer, but as long as I can get the same quality output this will be an easier option...

Hey Hey, Woooaahhh there

Cowboy Caution here,
This is absolutely a super dooper deal. I have a similar machine (the 790) and it IS great for recording tv (especially films) and is probably one of the best such machines out there for editing out adverts (etc) fro films and such.

However for the person who has never had such a machine before, just beware that these machines only have one tuner, so if say recording Christine Bleakley on the One Show, you can not then watch Emmerdale on itv at the same time (through the machine)

Of course if you have the right tv (most tvs SHOULD be okay) you can watch another channel on the tv tuner, so all is good, just be wary rookies out there okay.

Personally even though a great piece of kit, I currently prefer my Humax and Topfield pvrs (twin tuners) as I find them more convenient. (of course though they have no dvd functions)

Still if you find one, well worth it at this price,... heat added (oh and the hdmi upscaling is very good).

Very nice price.

I notice it has USB ports. Any idea if it can save recorded TV to USB memory stick?

If anyone else sees any in other branches, can they please report :-D. Might be worth the trail to my nearest Tescos if there's a few about nationwide.

Hi

Anybody know if any stores stock them in the Manchester-WIgan or Laacshire Area??

Thanks!!!!

I would just like to add this was not in a reduced to clear section or on a Managers Special shelf but next to the normal priced Sony Blu-ray players etc.

While I realize not all stores will have them, hopefully there are more out there.

Actually on looking at the receipt, nice price for the USB hub too :-D. Is it branded?

Ok, cheers for the reply.

Bought one of these (MR) from Richer Sounds a year ago. Fab deal if you can get it.

I presume these will not be compatible with recording Freeview HD format?

None in Whitstable or Broadstairs Extras. Not even empty space on shelves, they've obviously not had any in a while (if ever).

Phoned Kingston Park,Newcastle they dont have it in stock.hope this saves someone a wasted trip
there phone number is 08456779483(takes a while to get passed the options menu):-D

I haev a slightly different model, and it plays divx stuff, but only from a burnt disk and not a usb stick

Phoned Cardiff and they don't have any stock - saves someone a trip I hope.

Just phoned up to check Bournemouth and Poole area - no stock anywhere unfortunately

Does anyone know if this has timeshift feature and if it does, then for how long? I know you can pause live tv, but with timeshift you can rewind live tv, up to 3 hours in my current player.....so if my player is on and im out, i can come home and rewind up to 3 hours.

I don't have this recorder but afaik when you transfer the recording from the hdd to DVD it will re-encode the original stream and therefore you will have an "altered" (lossy) recording.
The amount of quality loss will depend on what quality setting you use on the DVD recorder settings, but even on the highest setting you aren't getting the stream exactly as it was broadcast. If you use the 1 hour HQ setting the result will still be inferior quality to the original broadcast imo.

I use a Humax foxsat recorder which allows you to copy straight from the hdd onto a removable hdd or memory stick. You can then transfer this to your pc and rip the transport stream (ts) and burn to DVD with no loss of quality from the original DVB-S broadcast.

I have a slightly earlier model (HXD870)of the Sony HDD/DVD recorder......I user the HDD to drop stuff down to from the V+ box.....plus then if I want to can make DVDs.

Very happy with mine

i have one of these. highly recommend. interface isnt exactly pretty but who cares when it does the job properly! had it for like 2 years, still going strong!!!

had my pioneer [same hardware - but imo nicer asethetics] for 3 years amazing picture quality. parents have the 320 gb version of this, nice machine, but overly complicated cf. the pioneer. smashing deal gromit!

None in Wrexham/Chester

for those wondering 'can it do this or that HD USB blah de blah'..... it's £60!! Anything you get on top of the basics is icing on a really cheap cake.

Thanks for that

£60 is an fantasitc deal for a Sony DVD recorder, so the HDD on top is just a bonus. I might have to make the trip down tomorrow. But I think I'll phone first, I've went down to my local for a couple of deals that didn't work out :-D

Seems a great price if you can get it.
Anyone else had any luck?

I think the only dvd recorders that allow you to record the freeview stream directly so you can record at broadcast quality and store on a dvd are the samsung models. This sony has a seperate freeview tuner board inside and therefore doesn't record freeview digitally but instead it video grabs the freeview signal as it comes out of the freeview tuner board. I know this sounds bad for quality but the freeview tuner board does a good amount of compression artifact reduction etc to give an excellent picture. These sonys are brilliant because they are versatile and easy to use. They multitask, have high speed dubbing and frame accurate editing facilities.

The later Sony DC range only have a subset of features that these do. They lose high speed dubbing, high quality editing. In fact the current DC range are quite abysmal and best avoided for many different reasons.

Looks like one off deal, no one else has found one.

I rang a few but no joy.
Even rang the twickenham branch and they said they're not doing them anymore
