Overpriced sony tat, canon and nikon equivalents are a lot cheaper.

Is that the same sony that sells its sensors to Nikon for all its cameras?

Or the same Sony that’s created an entirely new future direction of DSLRs by making them mirrorless and everybody else has been forced to follow suit by their class leading tech and they’ve all finally had to accept the future?

Sony is no dearer than the others when you compare like for like quality. It’s just that they only tend to sell quality.

This is classed as a cheap lens so you expect low results from it. Stick your hand in your pocket for the Sony zeiss 50mm f1.4 and you’ll get the appropriate performance to price ratio from that too if you want high end optics.

You’re yet another canikon blind fanboy that won’t accept change or that things advance and move on. Get with it!
Great price. This is the full frame lens though not the APS-C version, just in case anyone doesn't notice.

Anyone that get's this, update the firmware as Sony have vastly improved the AF performance on this lens (which was the main bugbear of users some time ago). This thing is tiny and weighs next to nothing, so if you're after an entry level prime lens to move from the kit lens, this is now a great option.

I don't dispute the fact that Sony lead the way in sensor tech and I admire their disruptive influence in mirrorless cameras, but when it comes to lenses they are a bit meh and struggling to catch up. I prefer tamron and sigma art lenses on my AR3, but on canon I stick to native lenses.

I really want a Sony as I had to sell my Canon pro kit as a result of a car crash - which damaged my cervical spine.

The main issue I have is the horrible menu system they have handicapped the cameras with.

Even Fuji's is better...

Without a doubt if they fix the usability issue their sales will zoom!

Which camera have you seen that you don't like? Worth noting that the a6000 / a6300 / a6500 share the same menu, but the a6400 brought the new menu that's featured in the latest full frame models which is much better. Not sure if that carried across to the a6600 and a6100 both of which have launched after the a6400, but I'd be surprised if it hasn't.
Good deal, don't forget Quidco for possible 2%
Great deal

I was looking at the a7r iv... lovely camera
Ridiculous price. 50mm unfortunately is not my go to lens - 35mm cine, 85mm portrait. But at this price might buy it to have it int the bag anyways. Must resist...

No mate, you are fanboy, canikon have no clue after 100 year of making camera and lenses, only sony...only sony phones too, samsung, apple, huawei and the rest, get the sensors from them..

Show me a single bad GM lens?! And they’re all equally priced to the competition

I went from Canon to an a73 a year ago and found the opposite with the 50mm 1.8. I had no issues with the Canon but I found the Sony slow to focus and often missed focus. Although I did get the Tamron 28-75 at the same time and that is fast to focus so may have just had the comparison skewed.

Agree the Sony 50mm is pretty rubbish in terms of a.f probably the worst lens in the range. The 55mm is a much better lens but obviously much more expensive. A decent middle option is the Samyang 45mm f/1.8.
Great lens for the price. Works out to about 75mm on the APSC Sony bodies (a6xxx series) - I have this and use it on a a6400. Perfect for portraits and reasonable bokeh. Heat

That's... not even a little bit true. This lens is much sharper than the Canon nifty 50. If you're going to criticise it then it's focus-by-wire barrel is awful, but it certainly isn't "typical overpriced tat".

I watched a video on this yesterday. I won't lie it made my head hurt a little, but if you put the 50mm Full Frame lens on an APS-C camera you get the exact same focal length as a 50mm APS-C lens on the same camera. He showed live video of changing between the lens on the same camera on a tripod and you could see the exact same shot.

I THINK the difference when we talk about equivalency is on perspective rather than length. So this 50mm lens on an APS-C will get you the exact same amount of optical zoom (which is what I would typically associate with focal length - perhaps incorrectly), but the perspective will look a bit different.

All had me very confused as I used to just think FF lens on APS-C body = 150% zoom!

The Full Frame 50mm FE 1.8 isn't great for auto-focus, although at this price it's still a steal. The APS-C 50mm E 1.8 is considered a much better lens, faster auto focus and OSS. Unfortunately it costs more.

Sony doesn't sell their sensors to Nikon. Nikon designs the sensors and outsources the manufacturing to Sony. Big difference.

Focal length doesn't change. FOV does. It is still 50 on aps c. Just a different angle of view. Distortions are still there if You get too close.

I think this one is known for not having great autofocus for video. If you're using for photos it's not going to be an issue. Even for video it's fine, just not as good as some other options. At this price it's a steal for anyone shooting full frame that doesn't already have a 50mm.

Well, they are significantly cheaper TOTR v TOTR, the only thing they fall short on is poor menus and slightly poorer handling. The sensors are exceptional although I think canon's still have the best skin rendition.

All of them have great lenses available especially with the latest generation of 3rd party lenses like the Sigma Art.

I'm using Fuji at the moment but I would love to switch as the latest eye focus looks superb

No it doesn’t it’s very slow to achieve focus on every body including the A9 , A9II, A7III and the A7RIV. Have tried several copies of the 50mm it’s just a very poor lens in terms of a.f. Optically it’s okay for a cheap lens.

With the firmware updated and on newer bodies, it really isnt that bad in moderately good to great light, its pretty instant for stills in good light, and usable in video with af drive speed set to fast and responsive. There are tons of videos of people showing how they can reliably use it for weddings and other work once its updated etc - Optically its pretty decent

In low light the focusing is a little slow to use for fast subjects but you can probably manage in most situations

I have this lens too and I think its poor. Pretty slow to focus, I've not had great results with it for photos and found in video it had too much focus breathingto be useable. The only positive is it's the cheapest e mount full frame lens.
Edited by: "rmax1" 26th Jan
I just have the standard lens that came with my a6000. What does this lens provide in comparison?
I've got this lens there is no autofocus in low light conditions . It's so loud and so slow. No worth even £100.00
Great price...although the initial price is over the odds. £180-£190 generally
Might be cheap, but this lens is terrible. Specially AF performance

I never understood why they ditched mirrors, I can't stand EVs. It would be good if they gave you the mirror option, but until an EV is so good I can't tell it's an EV, I would like a mirror.
