Great receiver for under £200.

does this have dolby atmos?

Was thinking of upgrading my htddw880, anyone know if the speakers I got with this will be compatible and good enough, if not any recommendations?

They'll be fine.

Great receivers imo (Sony), bought my first 5.1 in 2002, then an upgrade to a 7.1 in 2009 and still are both going strong after heavy usage. Will be upgrading to a Dolby Atmos compatible receiver once the prices start to drop more, though I am very tempted to pick this up for the low price!

I have this receiver and it's wonderful! Purchased knowing full well it's only 4K pass through (i.e. receiver is not HDCP 2.2 compliant and will not support copy-protected 4K video content, which possibly includes some future SKY 4K content... then you simply connect SKY Q to a compliant 4K TV, less neat but problem solved). The receiver's aptX Bluetooth in conjunction with my Xperia Z2 aptX Bluetooth streams fantastic sound (basically as high res Bluetooth as you can get!)... For the money, this receiver is a no-brainer

it would work with your speakers but is not much of an upgrade. wait, save a bit more and get an AV receiver with network capabilities so you can listen to internet radio and stream music. if you decide to buy this one add a Chromecast to it.

None of the Sony amps are ATMOS enabled yet. You can get a fully enabled system that only needs 6 speakers.

Is this basically an amplifier ? Ie could I plug my phone into the front via aux and play music amongst other things?

AV's do contain an amplifier.
It doesn't have an AUX input at the front, but you could use the USB port to access music on the device (phone, USB drive). Or you could use a 3.5mm male to RCA male lead but I found the volume is lacking.
Add speakers and away you go.

it takes care of the sound for all sorts of inputs. plug in your TV box, game console, Apple TV, Chromecast, firestick, DVD /blueray player, radio, CD player and output it to TV and speakers. so if you want good sound you don't have to buy a 5.1 system and a soundbar and get lost in cables and remotes. and a separate 5.1 while great for movies is not that good for music. I bought one AV receiver and use it with only a pair of speakers as music is more important to me. I could add more cheap speakers to go 5.1 if I had the space

Could anyone suggest a set of speakers, inc sub, which would compliment this amp please...?

At this price, any really. The Wharfedale DX1 seem decent.

Atmos is great if you have a room that you can set it up in. Cabling nightmare by looks of things. Not for rented accom :(.

Depends on your budget and the size of your room, but these Tannoys are awesome. If you join the Richer Sounds VIP Club (free) and pick them up in-store, they will probably throw in the speaker cable. If you have a larger room and want something with more grunt, have a look at the HS101's. Personally, I prefer the timbre of these to the Bostons.

No HDCP 2.2 support, hence cold.

Not sure about you guys, but I only need to buy an AV receiver every 4-5 years, so need it to be future proof.
