EDITED 8 April 2014 - THANKS TO IAN PARSONS : Richer Sounds advert in upcoming copy of What Hi*Fi Sound and Vision magazine which some subscribers have received - shows price as £299.99

ORIGINAL POST

Richer have sliced the price a further £50 (via VIP email link) to £349.99, RRP was £500.

This is because the model is being superceded by the STR-DN1050, announced earlier this week by Sony

This receiver recently got a firmware upgrade to HDMI 2.0, Sony being one of the view AV manufacturers to plan ahead with the hardware onboard this and the STR-DN840.

Stands by in anticipation of various sofa- and Onkyo- related huffpuffery

Lovely unit - I have the 5800es but this is very good for the money. I would strongly suggest you audition any audio/video equipment before buying though. I got into a bad habit of buying things based in reviews. The Yamaha amps I had were great but didn't have the detailed sound I really like. Also try and listen/watch component with like-for-like equipment. Richer Sounds have demo rooms in most shops as do Sevenoaks.

I was looking at these (to replace my trusty str-dg910 which was exceptional for the money I hasten to add), but I've heard there are issues with HDMI switching on the DN1040.

Anyone know if those are resolved? I don't want the hassle of setting this up, then having to return it.

The other option I'm looking at is the yamaha RX-V1073, that's £150 more, but no reported HDMI switching/handshake issues.

I was looking at this item ysterday as I am in the market for a receiver.
This model is a little too expensive, though a good price.

I was thinking of the model: Sony STR-DN840, for £200.
Has anybody tried out the 840? Is it any good?

I have no use for the wireless functions or other modern features.
I just need 5.1 and great sound.

PS. These Onkyo jokes are seriously old now. I think theyve been going on for over a year now.

Do RicherSounds allow you to take 2 receivers home (diffferent models).
Try them both out.
Return the 1 you dont like?

What features do you get over the STR-DN840 that make this £150 more expensive? Tempted by this but not sure I can justify the extra over the 840

Sound quality is apparently better.
More inputs/outputs.
HDMI upconversion (if you need this).

£150 extra is a lot to pay, especially when one doesnt know what they are paying extra for.

Yes, if you ask nicely.

From reviews I heard that the 1040 had better sound (subjective) but beyond that I wasn't sure about what justified the extra (I don't have more than 6 inputs) So looks like the 840 is the better choice (for me anyway)

Cheers!

Unknown sofa, probably locked to EasyMobile.com

If Richer Snouds ever went bust, would they have to call in the receivers?

Richer Sounds are advertising this model in the latest copy of What HiFi Sound & Vision for £299. Might be worth taking a copy into Richer Sounds to get them to honour it.

Do you have a pic? I'm very tempted if its £299!

I have got the DN 1000 and it is a great piece of kit.

No sorry. Check the latest copy in WH Smith. I get it on subsription, and it arrived on Saturday. Sometimes they arrive a day or two before they're in the shops. I was also tempted, so checked the website, but it still showed £349. Like I said, maybe take a copy of the magazine into Richer Sounds and ask them to honour the price. They are normally pretty good at that sort of thing.

Thanks mate I will see if I can get hold of a copy it.

Noticed that in my subscription copy

Very tempted as I may be able to find a cabinet to fit without going custom made (cutting a hole in the back) for the amp I have already.

Thanks mate I will see if I can get hold of a copy it.

If anyone can upload a pic of the advert I would really appreciate it. I'm looking to buy this tonight. I'm not a subscriber. Many thanks.

Is there any sort of expiry date on this offer? Thinking of jumping for it, but not sure if I can get it this weekend.

Thanks

I ordered mine today for delivery on Friday at the Middlesbrough Branch. Staff were spot on and honoured the What Hi-Fi magazine advert with no quibbles whatsoever, they even had a subscription copy on the counter to refer to. £299 for this bargain is an absolute bargain. Thanks!

The magazine with the £299 offer isn't in shops yet so I would say you've got a bit of time.

Awesome, thanks mate.

Was going to get the Yamaha 1073 @ 499 but I can't justify the extra cost at the moment, and I've heard lots of good things about the Sony (not just official reviews, but all the owners comments are really enthusiastic).

In a supermarket earlier this afternoon I had a look through the current edition of what hi*fi and it is advertised in there at £299.99 with RS.

Im going to pluck for the yamaham 1073, read too many issues with this amp and hdmi handshake issues.

is this deal still active ?

I think so if they have stock left. I got mine on Saturday. It sounds awesome. Really clear and detailed

Unfortunately I had HDMI issues with my HTPC so had to return it. Richer were really good, and suggested I try the Yamaha 675 instead but I don't like the sound so will have to return that too. A real pity as I loved the Sony

Got to say I had very good customer service from Richer Sounds online, they changed my delivery address to my work to allow me to take delivery without having to take time off and although I ordered at £349.99 as I thought this was a good price, when I emailed regarding the What Hifi advert they refunded £50 onto my card straight away without any quibbles.

Do I need to buy additional speakers as well to play music on this? Apologies for silly question.

Of course.
Yes.

You think its worth me buying one of these?

my Onkyo SR507 still works fine... I'd like the extra HDMI's and punch it gives to go with my new Sony TV...

If I go in store and say about the whathifi offer will they accept it or will I need proof or a voucher

I had the magazine with me but they didn't need to see it, I just said I'd sen it at 299 and they did it at that price

Their service was excellent in my case (preston store).

Thanks will try tomorrow

Any views on this Sony I know the Sony has 7.2 and wifi vs the demon axr x2000 anyone

Also getting a new Sony TV so I guess bravia sync will be uaefull

It seems like the sony is a cut above anything at the price including the x2000.

The onscreen menus of the sony are excellent and the sound quality is outstanding for the price.

As log as all your devices work properly with it on hdmi you are laughing at this price, this amp is definitely worth 500.
