Product Information

The Sony STR-DH800 follows on from the award-winning STR-DG820 with even greater flexibility.

As before, this Sony 7.1 HD AV receiver has been optimised to make the most of 1080p Blu-ray HD signals. With no fewer than four HDMI inputs and a monitor output, the STRDH800 is the ideal HDMI video switching unit and lets you plug four HDMI equipped devices through a TV with just one input. Added to this, the Sony offers full HD audio decoding. With full x.v colour 1080p compatibility, Dolby True HD and DTS HD, the STR-DH800 is perfectly placed to offer the HD audio to match HD vision.

Although optimised for 1080p HD, Sony hasn't forgotten about other sources. With a wide range of inputs and outputs for component, phono, digital optical and coaxial, this Sony home cinema receiver is able to operate at the heart of the most comprehensive of home cinema systems. A feature unique to Sony is their Digital Media Port. When used with a selection of optional components, this allows for the integration of a wide range of media products, including Apple's iPod. New to the STR-DH800 is Sony's S-AIR technology. Used in conjunction with optional transmitter and speakers you can enjoy music in another room, without the need for additional cabling. Another great feature is the ability to switch from 7.1 to 5.1 with bi-amped front speakers. If you're seeking the ultimate in sound quality, then bi-amping your front speakers gives greatly enhanced control and definition of sound.

Although technically advanced, setting up requires only a minimum of time. BRAVIA Sync links to other Sony BRAVIA products via the HDMI to give exceptional ease of use. Digital Cinema Auto Calibration optimises the settings to your room's requirements - at the touch of a button.

If you're looking for a budget AV receiver with full HD compatibility and the quality to match, the Sony STR-DH800 is up with the best in its class.

Hot - good for a cheap but decent AV receiver.

Have an STRDE495 from years ago, cost me £100 back then. Made before blu-ray was conceived, but it still doesn't balk at the blu-ray output, even though I haven't enabled down sampling or re-encoding.

Hi
I have added an image to your post. Not sure why you are able to post an image within a thread but still can't add one to the OP.
Have a read of this; it explains how to add images : - hotukdeals.com/ite…hr/ Drop me a PM at some point and I can talk you through how to do it garbage456 if you don't understand as it's a bit messed up atm due to reformatting on the new site.

Sony? Why not pay a bit more and get a well known brand like Onkyo? (respect to Louthboro Man :-) )

got the onkyo hts 3305 package from rs yday and have to admit that its excellent, set up was so easy and connected it to my ps3, xbox and sky hd without any trouble. was double minded at the time of purchase though, worth the risk. would highly recommend

Ah, OK, no worries. Kids eh

im a sony fan (not fan boy)

so i have DHMI sky HD, PS3, 360 & Blu-Ray player

so im sure im right but want to clarify

can i plug all 4 into this via hdmi

then this to my sony lcd tv via a 5th hdmi lead and thats it all done?

then just connect up my current 5.1 sony speakers and sell my current sony DAV 5.1 thingy?

curently i have to the 360 & ps3 via an HDMI splitter into my tv

and again i have to swap my optical audio from sky & ps3

so this will mean i can hear my 120gb 360 elite through the 5.1?

have i got this right?

Still makes me smile. weeks later.
Loughborough guy you are a legend!

£290 in argos and £400+ on ebay

i know i should get the donkyo-o but i like sony (if someone told me that they want a renault ratehr than a mercedes id kick them but hey im not a hifi person and own a mercedes!)

What's power consumption like on one of these? I'm interested in buying one and starting a modest 2.1 system, but I'm worried these big AV receivers are overkill for my bedroom...(will be connected to PC/360)

Thats pretty much exactly what you do 4in via hdmi then 1 out via hdmi to your tv but you will also need an optical out of your sky hd because it cant pass hd audio through, dont ask me why.

Im stuck as i cant understand why i cant choose dts or 5.1 on my onkyo through my xbox it was the same with every other componant i had pluged in via hdmi so in the end i sent all my other stuff through the tv again and just took the audio into the amp. Before im asked if my amp is capable yes it is its the onkyo sr308 all i could choose was PLII movie. If anyone has any idea why could they tell me what im doing wrong.

I have the same issue with the SR607 with a PS3...This is a known issue with the PS3 (don't know with XBox), but on PS3 you have to set the audio outputs to only the ones you want...It's a bit of a pain always switchiing depending on game to play...I can setup Dolby Digital and DTS and it switches those, but falls back to stereo for Pro Logic, so for a long session I go and set to pro logic on ps3.

i had the same issue with my sr380. try the following fix:

connect your xbox through hdmi and optical to onkyo.
press receiver button followed by audio button
now press the down arrow until u see Audio Sel: HDMI (it should by default be in HDMI)
try changing it to opt.
hope it works for you now, let me know if it works.

@the_gfp
Yes you can connect 4 HDMI's in and then then one out to the telly

Also it's a good idea to buy there warranty cover at Richer Sounds - it's quite a good product from what I hear.

I got this it's the nads, everything works fine with it V+, PS3, DVD Player, Wii (for sound). Excellent piece of kit...and it works brilliant with my Tosh Telly i.e. when turn telly on Amp comes on. When turn PS3 on they all turn on - awesome!! Good price. Heat added

The only gripe - I think the manual is a bit pants - but I suppose they all are for these kinds of products. Also when setting up - checkout the decent threads on AVforiums about it for advice - thread part 1 and thread part 2

Also I think with Richsounds if you don't use the warranty they will refund you at the end.
Used too be the case

excuse me, but branding is there just to give some kind of false impression. Amps should always match up to the characteristics of the speakers.

I'm afraid that's totally flawed logic. Amps from all manufacturers fall into different classes, and this particular amp is actually quite a bit better than something similarly priced from Onkyo (which pains me to say, as I really do not like Sony!)

Also, Majnu is quite correct in pointing out that different manufacturers' amps have different sonic characteristics - in this case, Sony amps are a little bright sounding, so should be paired with slightly warmer speakers.

All this aside, if you just want something to plug all your stuff into because you've not got enough HDMI inputs, then buy this:

richersounds.com/pro…blk

the old fat ps3 has to use optical for sound out. the amp will display multichannel. the ps3 has a decoder built in and the amp will amplify. i thought at first that because dts was nt displayed then it wouldnt work but after googling it i realised the problem. I think that this is a hrdware issue that was changed on the slim model and the xbox could be the same. The sound settings need to be set something to do with the bitstream/linear pcm but i get multichanel displayed on my onkyo 507 and when i press select on my ps3 i have dts hd. sorry i cant post a link to the webpage that explains it as im using opera on my joggler to type this but to re cap let the ps3/xbox decode and amp amplify .

it's a decent sales line isn't it. Because obviously people will put their receipt somewhere safe for 5 years and come back for £20. So you might as well take it as it's free

now im going to get abuse for this because i have no proof and didnt take a picture and its not online - but currys at j9 m6 wednesbury, w midlands have the denon 1910 for £329.99 which is about £70 cheaper than last i saw it at richer sounds. you have to order it in though, they dont have stocks in the shop - takes about a week to get them in they tell me.

didnt want to wait around, an the denon has no phono connectivity so went for the sony strda2400es instead

Hey all do you think i should settle with this sony system or go for the one below as i can pick it up new for £375, is it worth the extra?

This model uses about 50w. Uses a few less if you dim the display and a few more if you crank up the volume.

Thats half right. You can use hdmi on the ps3 and get proper hd sound. It just doesnt light up the dts ma lights as its doing the decoding. The newer slim ps3 can bitstream, but you wont notice any difference.

personally I'd consider the onkyo 607 for 249 if there are any left

Some are going ex stock at a local company going out of business, so do you think its worth paying a bit more and getting the above deal, is the amp worth it?

imho, go for the onkyo instead of sony

Hi there,

I'm a total audio newb, so apologies in advance for the basic questions. Is it possible to just use this with two speakers rather than going for a whole surround sound setup? Also, has anyone had any experience hooking their Virgin V+ box to this?

I bought one of the cheap Technika HD tvs around Christmas time and the sound on it isn't great, and I would like to get something better going without breaking the bank, so this seems like a good idea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Dan
