"Sony raises the bar once again: this is a seriously good mid-range amp that balances muscle and subtlety with stacks of features at a good price." What Hi-Fi Sound & Vision magazine, 5 star review, group test winner.

Just like its award-winning predecessor, the Sony STRDN1050 uses a rigid, vibration resistant casing for the lowest sound distortion possible. It also uses specially selected components for class-leading sound quality. When it comes to power the latest STR-DN1050 is as impressive as ever. The Sony is capable of outputting 165W per channel at 6 ohms, allowing a great flexibility in the choice of speakers that you can use and having the ability to fill larger rooms comfortably. Finally, this 7.2 Sony receiver is also able to be used in bi-amp mode. With the channels switched to 5.1, bi-amping gives separate amplification to your front speakers' bass and treble units (bi-wirable front speakers required). The end result is added control and a wider, more dynamic sound - both in stereo and surround modes.

In addition to offering room-shaking power, the Sony STRDN1050 is now compatible with High-Resolution Audio. This gives potential audiophile sound quality, that's far more natural sounding than standard audio. The STRDN1050 is also capable of some very clever sound processing. HD Digital Cinema Sound is a Sony developed technology designed to recreate the acoustics heard in Hollywood sound theatres. Utilising this mode with the front height channels gives a greater depth and accuracy to the sound. Imagine as a helicopter comes from above and lands, you'll hear the change in height as the movie unfolds on-screen.

Taking video processing to the next level, this talented Sony can upscale to 4K. With 4K the horizontal pixel count of 1080p TV increases from 1920 to 3840. With 4K screens now readily available, by equipping this Sony AV receiver with 4K upscaling, Sony have engineered in comprehensive levels of future proofing. In the meantime you can also upscale signals to 1080p for the best image quality with Full HD TVs and projectors. The HDMI sockets also allow 4K pass-through, for hassle free switching and viewing without the receiver needing to be turned on.

With Ethernet and Wi-Fi built-in along with support for Apple's popular AirPlay and NFC Bluetooth the Sony covers all networking bases. NFC via Bluetooth lets you effortlessly sync compatible portable devices with a simple swipe of the unit next to the special remote. With AirPlay you can stream music from your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or iTunes along with compatible music apps like Spotify, straight to the receiver. Additionally, you can stream music via DLNA from other sources such as your laptop or NAS drive. Finally, by using your smartphone you can stream and control your music by using the SongPal app.

In addition to passive and active zone-2 audio outputs, the Sony STR-DN1050 features a Zone 2 HDMI output. This flexible connection allows you to output both sound and vision to another room - making it ideal as a basic multi-room entertainment hub. 6 HDMI inputs are on offer to ensure that you can connect up all of your devices, with one front mounted HDMI port for occasional use such as connecting up a camcorder or games console. Additional twin HDMI outputs enable you great flexibility should you wish to run two displays within the same room; perfect for those with a TV and a projector. In addition to this, you'll also find a front-mounted USB socket to which you can hook up your iPod or iPhone. Using this digital connection gives the ultimate sound quality and even charges your device, too. If you have compatible BRAVIA Sync devices you can also control them all with one remote.

Setting up an AV receiver can be a time consuming task but this isn't the case with the STRDN1050. The initial setup can be carried out with the help of an on-screen wizard. This will take you through setting up your speakers, connecting to the internet and get you ready to enjoy your system. This Sony also sports a user interface with the emphasis on simplicity, to ensure that you can adjust the settings, change inputs and get the most from your AV receiver with ease.

The Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC) with Auto Phase Matching (APM) makes setting up your speakers simple. By placing the included microphone in your seating position, the clever Sony will automatically calibrate the system. It will take into account the distance from the speakers and their placement along with phase and delay analysis to give you the best sound possible in your room.

It's hard to imagine how Sony could possibly improve upon the award-winning STRDN1040, but with the new 1050 model they've managed just that - and by some margin. AV receivers in this class don't get any better than this!

I have the 1040 and it's awesome. My only complaint is that it's network media player is so, so slow to browse large MP3 collections. Maybe it's better on this model though.

Nice to see this at a lower price but will resist until it hits £350.

For the technically minded amongst the community can I access the 500GB of music I have stored on my desktop PC with this? If so how do I do it please?

I can easily transfer it all to an external drive.

looking at this thread it will support MP3/Flac files from USB drives, but some users facing difficulty with HDD's,
with HDD's requiring more power to boot it's probably why.

see post #75.

If you have a UPnP/DLNA server it can play them from that. It is just a bit slow browsing (at least the 1040 is).

I have the 1050, (posted a deal a while back, direct from Sony) great piece of kit, only 2 bugs about it, the slight background hiss when connected via bluetooth and accessing music via the USB interface isn't as easy as i think it should be. Sounds fantastic through the Bose Acoustimass series 10's and lots of connectivity options. Can even browse music/video stored on the NAS drive.
