I got the UBP-X800M2 the other day. The extra size and weight allows for it to be silent (my cheap Panasonic makes load disk noises but I can bury it in a cabinet.).

I did a side by side test with Captain Marvel with my £24.99 Panasonic Refurb on my TV (Samsung EU65JS8500 which I hate). I can quite clearly see the extra detail if I'm really close to the TV but from my seat it's not night and day. The darks are a lot better detailed but that seems to have a cost on the brightest scenes. I spent ages getting my TV settings right and don't want to go through it all again so am sticking with HD.

It's the same size as an old DVD player and is solidly built with a metal chassis. It can play just about any disc but unlike the M2 it doesn't play Dolby Vision. In terms of audio/video quality there is very little if any difference between modern 4K players for 4K discs. But the best players will be better at upscaling standard Blu Ray and DVD discs to 4K and/or larger screens. Sony is well known to always be amongst the best (if not the best) in this regard.

Firmware? As opposed to Firewire which must be long dead by now.
Given that the X800 doesn't have Dolby Vision and the X700 does I don't get why you would pay more for it (happy to be educated)

Got the X700, cracking little player but it suffers from the same crap Sony firmware as the X800M2 and the X1100ES. All models can’t auto switch Dolby Vision (DV) disc, so your stuck with either DV on everything inc DVD and BR or nothing inc DV enabled discs. It’s just dumb!

Mine play dolby vision hdr atmos the lot i just read certain forums which updates worth doing
Mine seems to have developed a problem already. It can't get past a certain point (1 hour 41 mins) in a movie, the xbox has no issues reading the disk
