I wish the i5 was available with the integrated graphics as we wont be using it for gaming.

Thats the base speed, it has turbo up to 2.6GHz on more demanding tasks.

Seems a good deal, i'm interested especially with the student discount. Hard drive is unusually small for the kind of spec, but not a deal breaker. The 2 year warranty is a big plus as most only come with 1 year that i've seen.

Yes that would be much more useful, what would you be using it for?

But is it healthy to be running the processor on turbo all the time? Yeah I agree the price at £400 is a very good deal, for a gaming laptop though which is what I would want it probably cannot run most things, yeah 2 years is good too and direct from the retailer!

My son is after a new laptop as his i3 Toshiba is struggling to achieve a high frame rate with Minecraft and the fan noise is hideous. I've upped it to 6GB RAM and 64-bit Win8 without success. Is the i5 Haswell with 1GB dedicated graphics going to help him out here? From the reviews I've read the Sony is quiet. I'll clean out the Tosh and use it for myself so as long as he's not moaning after. For £400 this looks decent.

Thanks for any help.

might be better to get more ram in option, but you will notice he jump from i3 to i5 cpu, and dedicated gpu

Well it will generate more heat and use more battery of course, but it will only use as much power as and when it's needed. Whether it's healthy or not, i would say largely depends on the laptops cooling design which i have no idea about on this laptop. if you are going to be pushing it hard a lot i would expect you would find out within the 2 year warranty period.

is it worth getting the touch screen as it for a 10 year old and will there be much difference in getting the full hd cheers

Mrjimmy

Watching films, using the internet, photos. Would prefer the 1080p screen rather than the graphics card.

I'm sorry, I must ask everybody here, despite the site, isn't this laptop basically the same if you are to upgrade a few things on this Sony?

2 year warrenty on sony, still your link is a good buy..

Sony has a 4th gen i5

Yes and No. The Lanovo i5 3230m CPU is more powerful, but the Sony has an i5 4200u which is the Haswell Ultra low power mobile CPU's. Also the Sony has a slightly more powerful Nvidia 740m dedicated graphics. There wouldn't be a massive difference in overall performance between them but the Sony should be much more power efficient. You will usually pay a premium for the new Haswell CPU's, and the (very capable) Nvidia 740m dedicated GPU.

This is about the best laptop deal posted for a while.

Edit:
Admittedly once you increase the HDD size and add some more RAM it does start to creep towards a fairly standard price.

My only personal problem I personally would have with the lenovo is a glossy screen and only 1 year warranty because I travel alot and am only using it for studies not gaming but all in all it is a good deal. I guess it depends on your reasons for buying a laptop would depend on which one you would get.

mentioned this laptop a few times now in other threads - imo its a great buy and would have gone for it if hadn't just bought a machine the week before
80quid screen upgrade would be my choice also

once in the education store click vaio laptops, choose VAIO® Fit E 14-15 and then the
VAIO® Fit 15E

This is really tempting as the configuration i have is £501.28 for an i5, 740m, 6gb ram, 1080p screen and backlit keyboard with the edu discount. Must resist!

Hmm... I just went to the education store and clicked on the configuration, selected the free upgrade and paid with my card. Had to put in my student details and tick some boxes saying I confirmed I was a student etc.

If for some reason you need to download games movies and any videos it will suck up hard drive space but if it is used just for surfing the web and day to day activities it should be fine. My previous laptop only had 250GB and that's lasted me 4 years.

It really depends on usage by today standards with games like BF4 taking up 25GB 320GB is not a lot but i guess if you needed more space you could purchase an external or portable hard drive. These have become really cheap recently and you could pick up a 1TB portable hard drive for £50 usb 3.0.
I know this dose not really answer your question but I hope it helps
