mmmm

i do like sony machine, but i do not understand why you pay £600 when you can buy this for £400 ebuyer.com/pro…335

Looks nice, voted hot.

I've heard Sony's come with a lot of **** bundled though so wouldn't buy it myself.

its a shame John Lewis dont have it because they offer 2 yr warranties
oh well... still at this price i was so tempted considering most Centrino 2 C2D P8400 laptops are over £700!

erm have to say my 15.4" widescreen machine was always more that capable of dislplaying my lecture slides side by side with out a problem, really dont think that extra inch would have helped me that much.

sony do design good looking machine but persoanlly i would not pay an extra £200 for pretty much an identical spec (apart from the screen being an inch bigger) becuase the it looks a bit better, and it is not like hp are a worse brand than sony becuase they are not.

have to say though looking at yours i think that sony have missed a trick as i think i can see a bit of the case that does not have a sticker attached to it lol.

i agree but this has the next generation centrino 2 processor and its a sony!!! :w00t:

Well if your happy. not for me.

lol you seem to like your sony machines, and the processor alone does not warrant a £200 increase in price, guess it is all down to persoanl choice and money at the end of day. I have to say i like the look of sony but i am not going to pay a premium for a sony badge, not when i can get an equally good if not better brand for 2 thirds of the prices

There are some bargins out on the market at the moment when it comes to sony, hp and toshiba machines (probably sony and hp more so) but personally i do not see this as one them. Yeah it is a good machine but I do think that it is priced fantastically well. although at least play have knocket £100 off it's orginal price as with that graphics card it was never worth anything close to it

ive got this machine very good payed 700 a month ago + 140 for accidental damage for 2 years by comet, coz my kids are like animals sometimes. my son has 2 cracked screens under his belt and hes only 6

Ended up formatting mine and stickin a fresh copy of XP on.

Also Sony dont tend to send install disks either. Dunno if thats the norm these days but they are nice to have.

ouch that must have hurt, you can get the machine for £650 straight off the sony website and 2 years warranty on top of the standard one year for £130 (doesnt say if that includes acc dam) and for £700 it really is not what i would be expecting for my money.

hardly any machines come with operating system cds anymore (although i think mine is one of the few that came with both a recovery dvd and operating system dvd) but by law these manufacturers have to provide a way of reinstalling the operting system, noramlly by pressing a certain key at start up access a hidden partition and i think i am right in saying that all manufactueres that do not include recovery/operating system discs provide away creating your own recovery discs and if you do not create them and you need them they will normally charge for them even if you are in the warranty period.

if you take a look at support.vaio.sony.co.uk/tut…337 there all the information for this machine on how to reinstall the operating system and create the recovery discs

I have the FW11. It's a fantastic laptop. Great keyboard, amazing screen.

I have to say, the bundled software is actually very good. Adobe Acrobat 8 (full creator, not just the reader), Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 (full), Adobe Premiere Elements 6 (full), Sonic Soundstage Editor, WinDVD (for blu-ray if you get the model with blu-ray). These are really good applications, worth a lot of money, and they are not cut down version, they are the full unrestricted versions.

Yes, there is a fair amount of Sony Vaio stuff, but you can uninstall what you don't want from Remove Programs.

I wouldn't dismiss this laptop just because you think it's got a lot of crapware on it - because it doesnt.

Simply put, it's the nicest laptop I've ever owned, and I'm on my 10th (including personal and work laptops)...

a) That has an AMD Athlon 1.9Ghz, which is QUITE a bit behind this Intel P8400...
b) This has a discrete ATI graphics card with dedicated memory, unlike the integrated stuff in that HP.
c) Higher resolution screen... Hp 15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800 resolution) vs 16.4" X-Black LCD WXGA++ (1600x900)

Regardless of what you think about a Sony price premium etc..., their screens are normally excellent and often some of the best out there.

No body in their right mind would dismiss this laptop becuase it comes loaded with masses of software that the average user would never user because it always be unistalled in a matter of minutes, most machine come loaded with masses of software becuase they get piad but the software houses to do so .

The reason i dismiss this laptop is the simple fact is i do not think you get value for money with it, like most sony products you are paying for the name. Yes sony make good laptops but no better than toshiba or hp and therefore it should be priced at the same level as toshiba and hp machines.

I admitted that the processor in the sony is better but it is not £200 better. The ATI graphics cards is a budget graphics card and is bearly any better than the onboard that the hp has, lookup the benchmark tests. As for the screen yes the sony one is better but the average user would bearly notice the difference, I have two machines one cheap and one an expensive hp machine with a really good screen on it and it is only when i put them side by side that i see difference but when i am using my cheap laptop it is perfectly adequate. You also forgot to mention that the HP machine has 1gb extra ram than the sony.

I dont think that i ever claimed that the sony was a bad machine or that the hp was a better machine, i was just pointing out that the sony machine is no where close to being a £200 more expensive machine than the hp. Knock the sony down to somewhere between the £500 - £530 mark and that is where it should be

For less than £50 more you can have Blu-Ray: play.com/PC/…tml (£645.99 after 5% discount)

Processor not as good, but everyday use you wouldnt even notice. Blu-Ray in the laptop is pretty cool for the money.

Took the words right out of my mouth! :-D

and why dont you read my response becuase like i said in that i have not said that the hp machine at £399 is better than this sony, but what i did say is that the sony machine is no where near worth £200 more than that hp, maybe £100 and the other £100 is for the sony name.

and seriously that graphics card in the sony machine is useless for dedicated graphics so i really would not have that as a point, for that price i would expect a graphics card around nvidia 9600m gs

No blue ray? pfffff

essexlad;3510349

Exactly! In my humble opinion, this: play.com/PC/…tml is worth the extra money.

It has Blu-ray, 4 Gb RAM, 300 Gb HDD, 2.1 Ghz Core 2 Duo T8100 processor and a 17" screen - all for not very much more.

Oh, and it's a Sony!

Yes Sony's cost more, because of the name. I have ALWAYS thought that myself, and used to always dismiss most things Sony, especially their laptops - but now I have one, I'm glad I paid a little extra!

Regardless of your thoughts about Sony, this laptop has the best keyboard I've ever used on any laptop, full stop. I used to think Mac keyboards and HP keyboards were the best, but Sony have nailed the feel and travel of their keys perfectly.

Anyway, I'm not going to harp on in this thread anymore, cos I am biased!!! My final word is, if you fancy a really goood laptop, and don't mind paying extra for some style, you won't be disappointed! The build quality, screen, keyboard, looks, performance, trackpad, battery life, etc etc are all great.

Over, and out.

This may sound inappropriate and probably receive various banterish comments but, all you people posting "what, about this?", "this is better" then linking to another laptop somewhere else, how about posting it as a deal?

I see this alot and the original deal loses focus and its hard to tell after a few pages what laptop people are referring to and what really is the better deal.

you can expect these to start coming down in price as it is an old model now and the new fw21s are out. but good laptop for the money!

i just dont understand how people can compare HP to Sony!
The build quality of this laptop is rated extremely highly and also it has one of the best screens available. HP have never made quality laptops and are cheap for this reason.

This Sony laptop is a good all round entertainment laptop. I opted for this instead of the blu-ray version simply because if i wanted to waste my money on Blu-ray, then i'd rather buy a PS3 instead.
Ok Sony laptops are generally more expensive but try finding a Centrino 2 laptop with a 16/17 inch screen and with these specs (not exactly high but good enough) for a cheaper price then i'll put my hands down and expect you to point me the way.
Sorry but HP, Dell, and all the other lower end laptops are snubbed simply for their build quality! (excluding Dell XPS, i had one and it was stunning (more expensive than this Sony!)) Expect things to go wrong with these.

How can we compare sony to hp? hp have a reputation for making quality machine for all budgets from the low end compaqs to high end hp machines. They are know for their excellent build quality and quite frankly their excellent machines. HP are the biggest selling home computer brand in the world and have been for the last couple of years now and you do not get to that position by selling machines that brake down all the time, that are built poorly and that are over priced. I believe in the latest figures hp had 18% market share while sony have less than 3%. This is how i can compare sony to hp becuase quite frankly hp are as good if not better than sony and looking at the figures quite a few people agree with me

Now i am not saying that sony do not make good machines becuase they do and when i was looking for a new machine for around the £700 mark a couple of weeks back there were only three manufacturers i would consider, with sony and hp being 2 of them but in the end i went for a hp becuase i could get a lot more for my money.

You also said that the sony is good all round entertainment pc but i have to disagree, yes it might be good for films (as long as you dont want to watch them in HD) but it will be terrible for games with that graphics card in it as it is probably the weakest of the dedicated mobile graphics cards on the market and last time i checked games were classed as entertainment therefore not a good all round entertainment machine.

Having owned both HP and Sony I'd like to have a good laugh

Got one of these from the Sony Shop for £599 last week.

Was impressed after seeing a friend get one from Camden for £750 2 weeks earlier!

Would recommend for this price. Nice to have blueray, but if you have a PS3 then no need.

I bought Sony FW11S for £800 a few months back and i have to say it's awesome.

S model has a Blue Ray Reader/Writer and double back lit screen. Also people comparing this machine or any other SONY FW series to HP are just not getting it.

Curofone, u just dont get it lol
HP doesnt compare with Sony, because HP are low-end budget machines! every laptop that you have mentioned is of lower specs!! than this Sony Laptop and the Sony WGA++ screen quality speaks for its self.
For Example, the HP u mentioned on play.com is cheaper ofcourse (budget laptop) for reasons such as... it has a lower spec processor and the lowest resolution screen (price difference alone is atleast £100!) , keep trying son :-D
