I'm hoping someone clued-up about computers can help me. I am looking for a new Sony Vaio laptop. I bought a Sony Vaio over 5yrs ago and it's been brilliant (cost me £1300). It's the first computer that has lasted more than 3 years so I am sticking with Sony. Only problem is that it's beginning to slow down now as newer programs become resource-hungry.

I originally had a budget of £1000+ (for a Vaio Blu-ray writable drive) but then decided that a blu-ray writable drive would come down in price after HD-DVD was ditched, so my budget has been reduced. I don't need a readable Blu-ray drive as I have a PS3.

Does anyone know if video editing software and programs such as AutoCAD can easily be used with this laptop without causing a slowdown to the system? My current Vaio has an Intel Pentium 4 2.66Ghz processor, 512K RAM (obviously slow). How much faster is the NR32 laptop in comparison to my Vaio?

I have a budget of a maximum £700 but would ideally spend less if I can get a decent enough powerful laptop to do the above things. I'm looking at the following laptop models:

Thank-you!

good deal but not everyone can buy from makro

Bit specialised, and have no experience of Autocad, but I would ask the question why a laptop? Of all activities, CAD would appear to need good graphics display more than most, and a Laptop is not the best way to get it! Even 17" screens on laptop seem to fade into insignificance compared with a decent 22" desktop monitor for about 200quuid or less! If it is only for showing finished projects out on site, then any laptop could do that job - but for spending hours in front, doing the project, I would have thought 22" screen of a DECENT make would be more important, and a discrete graphics card to handle the display resolution; plenty of memory too!
New machines are also Vista... are there drivers for your graphics tablet too? Worth checking, as there might not be, and you might need to add that to the cost of your replacement.

My partner is using a Dell quad core which I bought from a deal on here for Flash and 3DStudioMax stuff, with good results. Stuff renders very swiftly with the 4 cores.

For 700quid (ie 500 quid for the base unit) a bargain desktop would be a decent thing. (Quad core, 4Gb RAM, maybe RAID Hard Disk configuration, decent Graphics card) For 700 quid, even with a bargain buy; a laptop is going to be a bit lacklustre by comparison.

If you are stuck with needing a laptop, (as opposed to wanting one) then lots of RAM never hurts, disk access IS slower, (so then more ram is vital if you want to get around that a bit) and a separate discrete graphics card is probably needed, for fast screen redraws but prices climb fast when you want anything flash!

Two links you posted wont load for me, only the last one, and that is a POORER spec than the laptop I am getting rid of! it is now about 21 month old - Mine has 128Mb graphics, 2Gb ram and the 1.83Mhz core2duo processor, but it was no speed merchant compared to my current quad core from Dell (via Tesco) which I recently paid 284 quid for, and added 30 quids worth of ram! I found also that full all day, daily use wasn't a good idea with a laptop as it was hell on my sight, and the display is also now on the blink.
Video editing - only done one small scale job on mine using Ulead basic software - no problem at all, and have reencoded a few video files, fast as they come; but I have not done much more serious stuff since I changed and not used any "hard core" software yet - Sony Vegas was AWFUL, to the point of unusable on my laptop, so I don't know how well you have been managing on your old machine! ;-)

Sony?... wouldn't get too bound up with all this brand loyalty thing at all (true of ANY brand to be honest). Although I would not suggest Acer, as my 2nd Acer laptop was not a long lived model! As the past owner of two duff Sony TVs, which were both beyond economic repair in under 3 years, I wouldn't have another one given!

Great deal....Was just about to post it!

Got mine today at Makro, store only had 5 (plus one display model).

Yes, you need a makro card. To get one, you need to be a proper business and have a fair few documents (see their site for details).

I think I'd want a better processor for that money. Not cold, but not hot either.

yup not even a c2d - that would be a dream!

I'm pretty sure this is the same machine as they've got at Costco for the same price +/- a couple of quid.

Simon F

re Markro anyone who works anywhere in theory can get in if you fill out the form and supply details etc e.g you work for office XYZ and you provide the company details they let you register!

My local Marko seems more like a creche with the number of kids in it - so much for cash and carry!!

The way you can register for a Makro card is you need to have 2 recent business invoices over £50 and either a vat certificate or a company cheque book

Is that the list price or have you added VAT.

added vat this is the total price its 299.99 before vaT

When rating a computer can anyone tell me how use full the Windows Experience Index is?
Or is it better to just look at what compenents are used?

I'm not looking to buy at the moment but was surprised how some mid-range computers in pcworld had very low scores. Didn't always get more for your money.

Do you have any more details on the Costco deal please Simon?

Also does anybody know if the deal posted includes Microsoft Office and if not how much is it to buy?

Ta x

Cheapest MS Office is £100 RRP for the Home and Student Retail Version. The cheapest bundled version is Office Basic, which costs more than H&S, but has a less restrictive licence.
Next version upwards will cost over £300 RRP. It is getting increasing less common to find Office bundled with computers, as even the OEM costs are too high in a price sensitive market.

The computer above costs £350. You would be lucky to find MS Works bundled with that.

These were released mid June last year, so an old model, the processor speed is 1.73Ghz.
BT Shop sells for £407 so there is a good saving to be made

and you can get a makro card!

Good price.but,Only 1 MB - L2 Cache! Think I will give it a miss.

Certainly, additional 1MB cache is not worth a hundred quids or so.
The difference between Pentium Dual Core 23XX and C2D (taking into account the same clocks) is not bigger than a few percent

Yes, Costco deal works out at £405 inc VAT. I wasted my lunch hour checking today

Does include a 2 year warranty at costco, but, Makro will give you a 3 year one for £415 inc VAT total.

Has anyone seen these available in stock in any of the London/M25 stores?
