Any reviews on this?

Theres also a toshiba with similar spec.

remember folks its not a core2duo processor so it's only lower in price bcos its old technology, not a great deal but good for those that want the looks at a good price

The processor bit was concerning me - would you really notice any difference in basic tasks ?

Can't avoid the fact that I just like the Sony name / Vaio style .................... but maybe should pay a bit more given that I'll have it for a few years.

The Pentium Dual Core *is* based on the same architecture as the Core 2 Duo. The *only* difference is that the Pentium Dual Core has half the cache.

Same now with the dual core Celeron - except it has half the cache of the Pentium Dual Core.

This is *not* the same as a Pentium D Dual Core, which is old hat and ****.

The only difference between this 1.86Ghz Pentium Dual Core and a 1.86Ghz Core 2 Duo is the cache size (1MB vs 2MB) - and as a result, for general day to day tasks (internet, office etc...) you will see no real difference. Sometimes the FSB varies but it depends on exactly which chips and when.

That said, these aren't the new T3xxx series that have been just released and so are technically "older" technology, but it will be a while before they go away

I also bought a very similar Sony model for my brother, excellent machine and he's very happy with it.

Looks pretty good for the money and the name.

Note, it comes pre-installed with Vista Home Premium which you may or may not like. Personally, I love it tho there's a lot on here that don't (and it drains battery power more quickly than XP)

I'd say this was a better buy - ebuyer.com/pro…019

Slightly faster with a small hard drive size drop. Better make too :P

This is a slightly higher spec than the 21 deal that was posted a few months back. I picked up that one because of the price and styling, although had worried a bit about performance. It's been a lovely laptop and performance is great for my needs, including software development. My one niggle is Sony use locked DVD drives so you can't make them multi-region - the only workaround to that one is to use an external drive.

I'd say HOT!

Re the locked drives....

I don't know if things have changed since my last purchase of a vaio about 3 years ago but can't you flash the drive with some hacked multi region firmware? i did it on all my old ones and the one i am using now still works fine.... forum.rpc1.org/por…php

thinking about it here is prob a better place to start if you are a beginner tdb.rpc1.org/

Slightly faster CPU, cr*p graphics, granted the 8400m isn't going to set the world alight but it will at least play some games pretty well.

What have you been smoking?

the amount of rubbish that gets said in there posts! Lol.. Samsung being a better make, pentium dual core being the same as core 2 duo..

I have this as an insurance replacement, in fact I am on it now, I chose it over the Tosh as I have had bad experiences with them in the past.

I have nothing bad to say about it to be honest. Easy to set up, plenty of hard drive space and fine for everyday use, though I am not a gamer so can't comment on that one.

In my experience ( I've spent an average of more than £100,000 on buying computers each year for the past 8, so I have some experience), Sony is not a good make for laptops, especially with regard to getting them fixed when they go wrong.

A Pentium dual core processor (not a Pentium D) is the same core as a Core 2 Duo, just with less cache, and sometimes a slower bus connecting it to the rest of the computer, so it's less capable at CPU intensive tasks, especially game playing.

See en.wikipedia.org/wik…ore and look at what Merom or Allendale are.

There is indeed some rubbish said in these threads. I don't think I'm saying it, and I don't think tickedon is.

I have a XPS M1530 with a 2.00ghz Centrino Dual Core and I recently bought an Acer with a 1.86.ghz pentium dual core processor the same as this. The difference is highly noticeable, the Acer is choppy when moving pages around etc, slower starting up programmes. The choppiness is more likely due to a poor integrated graphics card but even so I would highly recommend splashing a bit more cash and getting a core 2 duo.

These days for £400.00 you would expect this to have a slightly better graphics card than it has, especially considering the outdated processor.

What you are paying for with Vaio is the name, you can get a far better Dell with next day warranty for a similar price if you hunt around for discount codes etc.

I disagree, not many (or any) with better gfx in this sort of price range?

Take off the sony name and it doesnt look so cheap. Loads of good deals around at the mo

dell discounts have dried up a lot lately, i was looking for an xps deal for ages since i need a laptop at uni, and just missed the boat on this hotukdeals.com/ite…gh/

havent seen any deals like it since

maybe dell marketing has changed their strategy?

dont know if i should wait for a dual core netbook, anyone know when theyre out?

Personally i would say this laptop is a far superior option:
]http//ht…335

Mainly because it has 4GB of RAM and webcam built in. Also HP always gives you more bang for your buck than sony and are more reputable when it comes to computing.

dmxdimension.com/del…on/ I was looking there a lot when I got mine , mine is the bottom one , (£629) bought mine around 8 months ago for £560 from dell with a 10% code etc, your best thing to do if you can is find a 10% code then go for the base machine because they seriously overcharge for the extra RAM, processor speed etc, for the price of a faster processor you could buy and fit it yourself and have your old one left to sell. In the £400 range Id be thinking more of a dimension or whatever theyre called.

I know the dell outlet has some good deals but I was looking for a couple of months and you can occasionally get the same spec for the same price brand new. Like i say just have to wait for a 10% code. On the XPS you get next day repairs for a year which is one very good reason to get it. The build quality is far beyond the Acer I bought and a apart from a slightly meddlesome mousepad its very good.

Finally, wouldnt a dual core netbook be a bit overkillish? I bought an Acer one because I love gadgets, really looking forward to playing about with it but sadly when Id had a go for half an hour I realised it was ****.

They have no stock at the moment but are expecting a bulk delivery in 2 weeks according to customer services

bought!! Cheers mate, heat added :-)

if ya wanted a laptop for gaming get 1 wid at least a ATI3470 or Nvidia 8600 at the least...
desktops r a hell lot cheaper to make a gaming rig...

Plus if ya want it for gaming go core2duo "T series" processors (good overclocks in desktops, not sure about lappys tho)

and if ur gonna be running vista wid it 3gb of ram at least for games...(2gb ram find for xp)

but personal i would say this page has a poor budget laptop but has a big hard drive for budget,

"If your out to buy something for games, buy a dedicated games console with High Definition.
Xbox, PS3 etc...."
U can get pc's wid high def lol! tbh if ur out to buy for games get a decent budget! not just abandon it.

These serious gamers r just saying that cos there **** at pc games ;-)

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with me or not there? :?

To clarify, I have not seen a laptop with an 8400m for this sort of price before, for £400 of course it will have a poorer CPU or it'd be bargain of the century.

If someone has found a C2D laptop with an 8400m for £400 please tell me as I'd be VERY interested ;-)

this looks like a good buy for the cash

the firewire port is handy

does anyone have any info on what tvout options it has ?

would struggle to get this spec in a cheap brand like fujitsu or acer at this price

Maybe Xenny spent £100,000 getting his last Sony repaired - he could be the voice of experience :-D !

650 on back order and no eta .... so a very unhelpful sales assistant just told me!

I've a lot of experience/knowledge in this area and I wouldn't touch anything with an 8400m with a bargepole. Not only is it barely powerful enough to run games at a decent framerate/settings, you'll wish you hadn't bought it when the warranty expires and your laptop stops working.

Thanks for the reminder
