Sony style are doing a free blu-ray upgrade on some computers. Thought ths 17.3" was good buy. You can build your own and i think it is worth upgrading the RAM to 3GB for £20. I have also read that you can negotiate a further 5% discount over the phone - seems to be a lot of success with this on the internet forums.

DIRECT LINK DOESN'T WORK - JUST CLICK ON CONFIGURE ON THE 17.3" E SERIES OPTION (ITS THE ONLY ONE OFFERING A FREE BLU-RAY UPGRADE)

This looks a very good deal! There are a lot of options you can add on to this like an ATI 5650 and a 1920 x 1080 screen.

I reckon that a Dell Studio 17" with an i5-430, 4GB of RAM, a 320 GB HDD, an ATI 5650 & Bluetooth costs £729. A similarly specified Sony E would cost £809 but for the extra eighty quid, you would get a Blu-ray drive and a 1920 x 1080 screen thrown in (both of which aren't permissable options on the Studio).

Anyone have any experience of the 5% telephone discount because if you could get it for £760 I might be tempted.

I was researching the f and e series and found a few mentions on

forum.notebookreview.com/sho…173

not tried phoning them yet.... but worth a go

Thanks, elmo, definitely worth a go. Gave you some rep. Now to phone up and cancel my order tomorrow and order again

Yes! When I read thequestion I thought no, can't be a Blu-ray writer; must just be a blu-ray reader but I just checked the Sony website and yes, they definitely refer to a blu-ray WRITER. Seriously impressed!

I would add the higher res screen

they were running a deal for the blu-ray rewriter on the f's a couple of months ago.. I only found it the day the offer stopped lol..

The 'F' was still too expensive, but its the only one I like in the range... apart from the FW

the BRRW would be handy rather than 'great' wouldn't get much use, but easy multiple back-ups would be nice..

I'm quite liking this model. I saw it last week with only an Nvidia graphics option, so I'm very happy to see it with the better ATI 5xxx Series options available.

THe offer is still on the F range too. It is available for £699

Hmm 2GB RAM, add 4GB.

The only problem i have with Sony is that their Warranty extension is too expensive (£150 for 3 yrs and their service isn't great)...So i wouldn't dish out £600-700 unless I know i'd be using the system for the next 3 yrs.

any other company and i'd have bought one. their customer service is abysmal.

my gf's £1000 laptop died 2 months outside the 12 months warranty and Sony wanted £600 to repair it.

Very good deal. I've just got a 2nd hand 18.4" Vaio AW series with Full HD and blu-Ray writer for £640. Cracking machine, lovely display - blu-ray movies look gorgeous! The keyboard's on these are superb, with the "chiclet" style keys.

Definately recommend upgrading to 4gb ram.

Have some heat!

anyone got experiences of vaio laptops? are they reliable and worth the higher price in comparison to other manufacturers of similar spec? i know youre paying some for the beautiful looks...

I am seriously tempted by this especially a free blu ray player as well , I would upgrade the ram to at least 4gb , would 6gb be overkill ?
Is there a big difference between the three processors as would be tempted to go to an i5 as well but not sure there is a big gap , is one quad core?
What are sonys like for heat?

i echo the above, any info/advice r.e the processor and these vaios in general would be great. cheers

The one in the OP doesn't appear to have a HD screen. Does this have any impact on viewing blu-ray?

Iwas over there like a shot when I read this, despite my 1747 order last night, but that 699 soon ramps up to a grand with ram and screen upgrades :(....

Ho hum...

Upgrade the RAM to 3gb, HHD to 500gb, video card, and make it FULL HD, and its a beast! £170 extra for the upgrades is worth it, especially 1080p

I think they are guilty of a little 'style over subtance'. My friend is a power seller on ebay and sells laptops, laptop parts and a load of other stuff, and has got through a few Vaios over the years himself. He rates the Vaios as good but not great, with common faults occurring (keyboard wearing out, power connector wear, crappy battery and running hot, plus others which I forget). Toshibas for instance are better build quality (according to him and myself-- family members have owned a couple) but they don't look as good. I think Vaios are a little overpriced and are trying to imitate the macs too much nowadays-- this is normal with Sony though, their products sell at a premium.

Am i being stupid, how do you get the free blu ray upgrade? When you configure its a £50 upgrade.

You need the third option for the blu ray burner.
