What have you based this on?
I thought the ipod had finally pipped it (excluding the rubbish headphones you get with ipod)

most reviews put the sound quality above the ipod.
they are basing it on the previous gen ipods thou.
can't see any basing it on the current gen.

I think i read in What hifi magazine that it's slightly better... clearly if you buy the ipod you will need to get a decent set of headphones to get anywhere near the Sony.

I used to own the bluetooth model of the sony and loved it... then lost it had to revert back to my 4gipod nano... it's not quite as good as re-producing the noise

Based on the fact that Sony have their dedicated S-Master digital amplifier built into their current high end players, whilst differing headphones to any MP3 player make some difference, the Digital Audio Converters are the most important feature of any player.

If you want variety of features, the iPod is hard to beat, if you want a player for sound quality, the Sony is hard to beat.

Based on having a Ipod classic, nano, and a sony X1060 and a A845 (not all mine but with 4 kids
we have a good selection. But its only my opion as to the music sony produce in the above unit. As for the headphones I use Sure SE 115 just in case this comes into the discussion.

Tried my X1060 compared with my brothers iPod Touch using the same encoded album and utilised the same headphones for listening with all sound enhancing EQs off, and there was clearly a difference between the two, the X1060 sounding far more detailed particularly across the mid range frequencies, sounded more expansive to both of us in testing.
