I need a new camera... or maybe just a new lens... or maybe both?

Using a Sony e-mount 35mm 1.8 at the moment which is a great lens and takes brilliant photos, but I find myself reaching for my phone more than half the time just to get the wider angle. Problem is, most of the wider angle lenses seem to get slated in reviews, apart from the Sigma 16mm but it’s huge!

Anyone else found a good single lens solution for travelling?

A friend of mine was blacklisted from Sony cashback. They refused to give him a reason. Would be interested to know if anyone else has had that happen to them and why?

Small wide angles for Sony APS-C are a weak spot in the line up, the 16mm is very poor, the pancake kit zoom is actually sharper. The Sony SEL20mm F2.8 is also tiny but a bit slow and while much better than the 16mm is still not particularly sharp or wide (30mm equivalent). The 16mm F1.4 Sigma is a brilliant lens but its big for lightweight travelling.

im after the 10-18mm f4 myself, yes some problems with early release modes but now all fixed and very sharp, see a few pictures and video, id use it at 14mm for video.

only way sony's stuff is affordable

So if you get a good unit then it's a great piece of kit... Bit different to being 5% better than kit lens...

The lenses cashback is offered on usually aren't discounted.
Shame A7 III are all £1800 atm. Even with a hefty reduction and this cash back. It will be difficult to beat grey ones

Black listed?? Unless your friend is a dealer himself, it’s pretty much down to the t&c of the cash back. Sony just can’t ignore the claim...
much more limited choice of cameras than before...
shame there is no A7R4

Not at all. Many shops do 10% off all lenses etc on Black Friday. Also double cashback often kicks in towards middle to late December

Buy an adapter and pick up a good quality vintage wide angle lens (or two) on that auction site for the price (or less) of a new Sony lens. Plenty out there.

NB: Don't the Minolta lens fit on Sony cameras without adapter? A Sony owner/user can verify.

Most old cheap wide manual lenses are 24mm or 28mm and on APS-C become considerably less wide 36mm and 42mm respectively. Old quality wide lenses like 18mm~14mm are still expensive on Ebay and often don't adapt particularly well and are heavy, plus no AF. Minolta doesn't fit E mount Sony, you are thinking of A mount.

Adapting old wide lenses is best done on full frame like the A series mirrorless to get their native field of view, conversely APS-C is good for adapting old telephotos for extra reach, something like a Nikkor 300mm F4 (picked one up fo £120 on Ebay) works great if you can cope without AF.

Thanks for clarification. That information should be useful for any present/potential Sony users. Mike_HUKD didn't state whether he was going APS-C or FF so just putting options out there; eg Samyang 12mm f2.0 is cheaper than the Sigma 16mm and lighter (MF though) and has good reviews. Wide angle suggests landscapes or astrophotography is primary subject matter so I wouldn't think MF would be much of an issue in those scenarios.

Anyone who thinks it's only 5% better than the kit lens has never used one.
It's a great lens at all focal lengths. Super sharp and great colours.

It is odd especially as they are overpriced IMO.

I agree, 1670z is a fantastic all rounder. I've had one for 6 years, distortion isn't the best but colours and resolution are excellent.

have seen quite a few complaints and a few comparisons and they were right
have also seen ones saying their copies were good and ... they were also mainly right
just depends
the 18-135 seem more consistent

I hoped the a6400 would be included, guess it must be selling well.
I assumed the 6500/6300 and 6000 would have been though, good news for eBay sellers I guess.

Yeah, I think it must be down to the copy, I had 7 or 8 from Sony refurb shop (remember them?) and several were noticeably softer with washed-out colours than others. I've kept my original one, even though it had a couple of dust particles in it's bang on.

I use adapted vintage lenses, but imo, after using about half a dozen, wide angle film/early-digital era lenses don't do justice on a modern hi res body...elements and coatings are quite primitive comparing to the modern ones, suffering from lack of sharpness, CA, coma, poor flare control, etc. And on a crop sensor, it's even worse...In the end, I got a tamron 15-30 canon mount adapted to Sony ff body, very happy with the results, but focusing is far from perfect, bearable tho...

Ironically it's the iPhone 11 I use for the wide shots

I don't have the pro, but the camera is identical other than telephoto. It's a really really good camera for a phone and takes some great shots, but neverthless the images still look naff next to images from my old APS-C Sony with a 35mm lens on it. The quality is incomparable as soon as you put it on a decent size screen, honestly.

I have an iMac Pro with the 5k screen (27”) and the iPhone 11 pictures are amazing. Need to take some 61mp pics with my Sony a7r iv as a comparison but not used it yet since receiving it in Sept!
