Oh man, I JUST bought a Philips Ambilight!
Nice one Bavy, very pleased with the 43" version for £349 of this that you posted a deal for a couple months back. Just got to find a suitable wall mount bracked as it has a tiddly vesa mount of 100x200 on the 43" version.

Most brackets will work, I used a sanus one

Funnily enough that's the one I think I'm going to get today
I think the 49" size has the more common 200x200 spacing but the 43" has an oblong 100x200 spacing on the back. Sanos seems to have a great range of sizes covered on their brackes, plus they actually give excellent instructions on what it can and cannot do.

Did you upgrade to android 8, I had to do it manually via USB, I brought a xf75 last year from here to for my dad he happy. Brought a xf9005 4 weeks ago from Costco for 720 that's my main TV. There difference with xg80 and the higher end xf9005, but to be honest this tv picture quality is very good compared to the competition nothing will touch this.

My 43XG8096 came with the latest firmware on it when it arrived.... Sony did release a further update a couple weeks ago but my TV doesn't find it when I search for new updates so it would need me to install using USB and to be honest I haven't bothered yet as the TV has been working fine as it was and I didn't want to mess it up. I might do the upgrade in a month or two after everyone else has done the testing on their TVs

Is this actually any good or is it one of Sony's lesser models

It's Sony mid entry level android tv,, has most off the high end features of more expensive tvs with voice remote, the picture quality on this will be far superior to any other brands in this price range, it has dedicated picture procceessor, and trumilous display, which will give better, sharper and more vivid colours. For the price nothing will beat, although refurbished these are almost new and come directly from Sony Weybridge.
Anyone know if this model will receive AirPlay 2 and Android 9 support?

It will not receive android 9 or air play that's only on certain 2019 models like the XG 950

I been buying from here since when it was called Sony clearance, brought, camera hx20 from 2012, Probably about 6 tvs since 2012, radio clock, 2 hi fi, 2 Walkmans and 3 soundbars , never had problems, some stock will come in generic brown boxes, but condition has always been good.

Really good for this price.... it's the same as the 49XG8196 which is sold by other retailers, it seems the 8096 is a special version just for Currys / PC World and Sony Centres (so they don't have to price match anyone else because no one else can sell this model)... I cannot see any techincal differences other than maybe the foot design and possibly cabinet colour.

My 43" came in original box, all packaging and had sticker plastic protective wrap all around the TV and I am sure it was never used. I got this model as it's got 4 HDMI ports which most lower priced decent TVs have 2 or maybe 3 only.

Something to note: if you use YouView (like Freeview Plus), you cannot use an optional USB drive to record on to, and cannot use the (non Freesat) satellite receiver. You have to disable YouView to enable USB record / Satellite, it's a stupid software limitation that Sony have employed for no logical reason..... No biggy as the satellite reciever is clunky and no proper EPG and I can't think I'd need USB recording.

So this 'feature' can’t be used like a poorer version of a ‘Set top box’? Does this also apply to the higher version in the Sony range e.g. XG90 or XG95?

yes, it looks the same with the XG9005 and XG9500 series it lists USB record and dual input satellite (not Freesat though) and has a note:
HDD recording (REC) and Satellite features are not available if YouView functionality is enabled.

- click the 'footnotes' bit at the bottom of the page

It seems that there is some restriction in place (maybe some licencing issue or incompatiblity with YouView) - the thing is that if you disable YouView (which as an EPG isn't that great or different to Freeview epg) you also lose the built in All 4 and 5 player and it's not downloadable from the Google play store.... these two apps are only officially available when YouView is enabled... there is a workaround to add them manually (sideload). Curiously I noticed when YouView is disabled, Freeview EPG appears instead with Freeview logo.

Also note that the satellite receiver is not Freesat, just a very plain and clunky free to air receiver so no detailed EPG like Freesat or Sky.

Clearly Sony sell the same TVs all over europe where different software features are enabled/disabled for local services.

I see Sony now list the 2020 models on their site, the 'H' series ( XF = 2018 / XG = 2019 / XH=2020) and they no longer list USB record or satellite as a feature so probably completely disabled it or it's there but no longer advertised as it's not really usable in the UK)

Thanks so much for that.

And here was I thinking this could be a positive feature. It strikes me like useless functionality.

Do you know if the similar functionality described on the Samsung Q70’s has similar failings?

I'm not aware of other brands unfortunately as I only researched Sonys as other than this annoying issue, the rest of the TV is pretty decent and I am pleased with it. I thought the USB recording might be useful but in fact I've found the built in iplayer apps covers pretty much all my missed programmes and the one half decent thing that the YouView guide does is allows 7 days scroll and play of many missed programmes

I had youview activated on my XD8005 2016 TV, but be honest wasn't anything special, wasn't big deal, got rid of it and found very slow and cumbersome, mainly use sky q, and Netflix /amazon prime /YouTube
