Yes it can, I've been using a few companies one from ebay and another company called sim unlock used them about 15 times without issues to unlock Vodafone phones. You only have 3 attempts to unlock, so before you go ahead to buy unlock code you go to service menu to see how many attempts have been used.
I recommend a cheap contract if you can. Will qualify for the Sony headphones which retail at £175. Really nice phone and slim to use in hand

I’ll get my time machine out
Weirdly, this checked out at £255. Just been dispatched, so it does exist in their inventory (have had a good deal cancelled before) but I'm basically expecting to have a SIM unlock or blacklist issue with it.

Shame about missing the O2 deal, never bothered looking at Sony phones until the last couple of days.

I think that you can only get the headphone deal if you purchase from carphone warehouse, mobiles.co.uk, or one other retailer which I can't remember the name of. I'm considering upgrading through ee but I wouldn't get the headphone deal. If I went with one of those retailers however I can't keep my number but would b eligible for the deal
So, received a mint Xperia 5, but have just learned that apparently Sony lock down the bootloaders of their network locked phones, meaning no Magisk/root... deal breaker. Gutted!

Yeah, tbh I should have looked into it instead of assuming it would be like Samsung. Still a good price for a nice phone for the vast majority of people who don't need root.

Yes, that's correct. Mobiles.co.uk was £23 a month and £50 up front for me. I was on EE already so had to PAC number to a temporary sim on 3 and then PAC back again, bit of a faff but finished inside a week all told!
