I got silver version for my GF few days ago. Bought from ebay so only paid £430 for sealed UK Version.
I used it three days and its really comfortable to handle. OS is fast and already received 2 security updates (April & May). Sony (or Google) changed the update method and now you don't need to restart and wait few min for phone to update. Everything done while ur using phone and then quick restart. So you only loose ur phone for 30sec.
Camera is bit better than my XZ1 (Sony worked with Qualcomm to tweak cam algorithm to take full advantage of SD845).
Pretty much all apps can uninstall without any issue. Screen is very sharp/bright and YouTube hdr videos really good. Don't be fooled by LCD display.
BTW really had to find screen protector due to curve on the screen. Caseflex Clear Silicone TPU Gel Bumper Cover With Shock Resistant Reinforced Corners and Raised Lip Protection is really good.

While I was waiting for XZ1 to come down further, it looks like XZ2 is catching up! Very good deal

This app is discriminatory against people with fat fingers
Great price for the phone. The only thing I don't like about the phone is its weight, it's quiet heavy for a small phone. Heavier than previous versions of the compact. Still hot deal

To be honest, the width, which is what most people are likely to be concerned about in their hands definitely make this a compact phone
Really chunky. Really really chunky. Probably the only real negative at the price, though.
Nice width, but too chunky in a pocket for my liking, Wouldn't mind if it had a 3500mAh battery to justify the bulk. Also, polycarbonate back, but no wireless charging? No headphone socket either is a shame. Decent-ish price though - heat added.

Which eBay vendor?

Which eBay vendor?

I bought from private seller. But you can buy from sellers based in EU for £435 (dual sim).
I had a Sony Xperia XZ which was decent until I upgraded to Oreo and then it was absolute rubbish. Sony didn't support the Night Light feature and third party apps can't draw over the system UI so parts of the UI weren't affected by Twilight app that I used so you end up with non filtered parts of the UI, horrible and blinding when you open up the notifications panel for example. I had to resort to using Substratum and then I thought f$k this I'm selling the phone. I believe Sony support the Night Light feature on the XZ2 in Oreo, anyway more than happy with the Pixel 2 I bought.
I managed to get a like new XA2 off amazon warehouse (like new @ £233) which is due to be delivered Thursday so can still cancel if I need. Obviously I know this is a flagship compact and I've had previous Sony's, such as Z3 compact (one of the best phones I've owned).

I wonder if this Is worth the extra £220 as I only change phones once every 2-3 years and I'm not bothered too much about camera capabilities since when out and about (esp when abroad) I take my camera?

Agree with you regarding Z3 compact, absolutely loved that phone!
My Z3 compact is still putting in a solid shift but it's due an upgrade. The XZ2 compact is still too much for me, might dive when it's closer to the £400 mark. It's a good price if you're looking to buy now though.
