How about unlocking this?
12months before they'll unlock it directly through o2
A minimum of £10 on ebay to unlock
Are the eBay unlocks reliable? Great prices but I'm in no rush to upgrade from my Z1 Compact though. But I know someone who is...

Heat OP!

Not sure, took me a week to get my z3 compact unlock off ebay
No way to unlock other than through eBay, add another £10 on top. No fast software updates as they'll have to go through O2 first, and no way to unlock the bootloader (should you ever want to).
will this take a tesco mob sim? Tempted, though it's above my £300 budget.
good phone.i got my z3 off o2 last year when it was on offer for 240 with free chromecast.great little phones.easy equal of iphones.brilliant battery.i imagine this one is even better with having less flaps they are annoying.battery is slightly larger than z3 yet from what i have read online battery life isnt quite as good as the z3 i think the snapdragon 810 may be to blame as the screen is the same.so much for 64 bit octacore little big been more efficient.
I bought a Z3 Compact from O2 last year. Unlocked it via eBay and then flashed the standard firmware onto it, instead of the custom O2 firmware.

Haven't had any issues at all.

Tesco uses o2 network so yeah it should do
Few years ago when I got my Xperia S through O2 the bootloader was locked. So I was stuck with outdated versions of Android and buggy software from Sony (when third party ROMs could do so much better). Have fun with that.

Yes, I was in the same position last year when I bought my z3 compact. Cheapest deal was o2 and I'm with tesco, and as they use the same network it will be fine.
Nice phone does everything, only downside is that it is chunky/brick-like, obviously good size screen. I still find it hilarious seeing people put 6" tablets to their ears thinking they have a bigger ***b, lol

i just went from Z1C (18 months old) to Z3. The extra 1Gb of RAM seems to make a real difference to using it. The Z5C still only has 2Gb so possibly not worth the upgrade though.

Sony let you unlock the boot loader now. They also have one of the cleanest Android implementations, practically stock, and I find their tweaks to be an improvement.
the battery life on these are great, i can really go a few days if i have to
ive read mixed reports about the camera but again i find it amazing
screen is only 720 but for its size i doubt youd notice the difference if it was 1080 or whatever as its bright & good crisp colours, not sure what else youd want on a screen this size (_;)
also going by the wifes z2 which has had plenty of updates, i expect this to be well supported for a while too, not abandoned like HTC do after 6 months

It says on the website you can unlock it at any time for free on pay monthly but you are still obliged to see out the contract even if you don't use your o2 sim.
Got the Z3 Compact, Brilliant Phone.
Looking at the new Z5 Compact, Kinda don't see the point in Upgrading to this yet. very little difference and would ust be doing it for the point of having a newer model. But with not much noticeable difference for it.
SO, will leave will maybe another model appears & maybe one after this.
Happy with the Z3 Compact i have, and still punches above the other phones on the market..

I have this and this does not have overheating issues like other phones with snapdragon 810. Maybe the less intensive 720p screen helps
This or the Samsung s6?

this it LG g4 which voda don't have in stock
good find op, think I might finally have found one at a reasonable price, thank you

battery is decent but not as impressive as it's older brother the z3c.
speakers are really good and volume is fine through headphones.
Camera is slow but takes some great pictures.
Android 6 update is around the corner.
my only complaint is the RAM they really shouldn't have cut corners there. but then that's why it's not 600 quid
I understand that unlocking is quite straight forward, but does this phone come with o2 branding that is easy to remove?
Does the z5 compact still have overheating issues?

I swapped the Z3 Compact for the Z5 Compact and apart from the fingerprint sensor I don't really see much difference if I'm honest... I do prefer the open USB charging port but they're the only two aspects that make me happy with the change of phone.
Slightly off the z5c topic, but I've got a z3c and love it. As for the flaps, I got a magnet charger dock to save using the flaps, which didn't stop the USB from breaking with little use (connecting to pc for photos ((I hate google backup photos)), but I found a replacement for about £6 on Amazon and it fits even better than the original. I wouldn't go for the z5c based on what you're all saying about it.

^ pretty much my experience.

If you have, or know someone that has, an o2 contract use the details for that on the unlock request form online. I did it this way for both my Z3C (on o2 contract) and a family members iPhone (o2 payg) when we landed in Hong Kong and found both handsets were network locked. I used the account details for my Z3, which I'd had for about 4 months and the iPhone was less than a year old.

Can't remember exact time frame, but was absolutely less than 24 hours when the unlock was processed.

Sony do. O2 don't.
Despite the price drop on the phone itself the contract deals still work out cheaper through third parties, such as mobiles, etc if you trust autocashback. (redemption deal is even better if it works).

Even the 4GB/1000-mins giffgaff combination is cheaper over 24months even though the phone is now £38 cheaper on o2 since they charge £6pm more for their 3Gb/unlimited-calls tariff (£21pm vs £15pm). Though you could maybe buy the o2 phone and use the giffgaff sim as its the same carrier. I guess you'd need to add the cost of the cheapest o2 PAYG sim, as I doubt they'd sell it simfree. There's possible £30 quidco on the giffgaff phone+sim package versus 2% = £6 on the o2. Which closes the upfront cost.

Oddly the o2 website makes you pick a PAYG bundle tariff (cheapest = £10) but then doesn't charge you anything for it.... As others have noted the o2 phone may well have a locked bootloader and rely on o2 software updates.
