Sony Xperia Z5 Compact (PAYG) @ Vodafone £259 (after bundle/top-up)

Great phone at a (at least in recent memory) low price. Perfect if you're tired of low power small-factor devices or the general screen-size creep of newer phones.

The handset cost is £249, but you will need to top-up the SIM yourself (possibly as low as £5 if using a debit card?) or buy a bundle e.g. the £10 Big Value Bundle (500MB of 4G UK data, 150 UK minutes, Unlimited UK texts).

Vodafone will unlock for free (https://support.vodafone.co.uk/Setting-up-and-using-your-device/Network-unlock-codes/38947782/How-much-does-it-cost-to-unlock-your-phone.htm), but you will need to pay for a top-up and wait 30 days* (https://support.vodafone.co.uk/Setting-up-and-using-your-device/Unlock-your-phone/38947773/Why-am-I-having-problems-getting-a-network-unlock-code-NUC.htm).

* Alternatively it looks like some eBay sellers will sell an unlock code for ~£12 or so and you can avoid the wait. Mileage may vary with this option, however.

Edit: There is a sign outside the High Holborn branch of Vodafone claiming that this deal ends on Monday (4th July).

great phone have one myself.also had the z3 compact.not sure it's worth 100 more than the z3 compact.very little difference between them both have similar cameras.similar battery life and performance is great on both and neither overheat it's the 720p screen I tell you pure genious keeps temperature down battery excellent and performance smooth.
Great phones got the Z3 but they do overheat when recording in 4k
They do, yes. All 4K capable Sony phones overheat. Poor software optimisation I think. Samsung phones don't overheat like Sonys.

HI, just bought the Z3 and i've recently heard lots of negative stuff around build quality, have you had any issues?

No none at all with me, its been great, highly recommend it
Fantastic phone. Hot
I've never felt it overheat or slowdown but then again I have never used it for 4k video recording never felt the need.ive had a lot of phones and currently have this one and a LG gflex 2 and never felt that overheat either even so the snapdragon 810 is known for it.both really fast and capable I get 8 hours screen time on this compact with screen set to about half brightness without stamina mode.but I use nova prime.disable all apps I don't use or uninstall them if possible and keep location off unless I'm using strava or maps
Hi
I've got the Z5 PREMIUM. It definitely overheats whilst recording in 4k or even watching a video for more then 5mins. lovely phone though. battery life is amazing. great build.

"All Sony 4K smartphones overheat when recording"
"Mine doesn't overheat but I don't use 4K recording"

z3 is great z5 terrible...
They do overheat. Gaming for longer than three minutes, camera for more than a minute...it'll be getting too hot to hold. Shame.

Could you elaborate please on what is worse on the z5c than on the z3c, cheers.
Am tempted by the z5c but want to know its pitfalls.

I've also got the Z3 (full size) it's a brilliant phone.
Just done the Z3 Compact - Z5 Compact transition and its slightly (and I mean slightly) larger.

It does get slightly warm - however no more than any other phone.

I don't know whether its just the new phone feeling but its definitely that bit better than before - its the first upgrade in a while where I've felt like an iPhone user moving from 6 > 6s

I use mine as a satnav (waze [other apps are available) and a 3-3.5 hour journey with bluetooth and music uses about 50% of the battery which is a sterling effort!

Given the choice between z3c and z5c (£+100) I would go for the newer model - however I don't see a real issue with sticking with the 3.

Thanks for the comparison. The back of my z3c cracked very easily - do you think the z5c has the same glass back?
The sd slot on my current z3c doesn't hold the card so I need to change the phone soon.
It says the delivery time will be within 1-2 weeks. Hoping it's sooner.

Are there any providers on Vodafone network that offer 4g? Apart from Vodafone themselves.

The back of the Z5c is plastic, last time I dropped one I cracked the glass on the screen, the back was scratch free.
Does anyone know if Vodafone will unlock these phones?
If so how much ?and how long does it take?

Yes they will, costs £20, don't know how long, have to have it active for a month before unlocking, offer ends next Monday reverts to £400, was the answer from the Vodafone shop yesterday.

If anyone bought it, what's the deal with the 1-2 week waiting time for delivery? Did anyone receive it sooner?

"If you’re a Pay monthly, Pay as you go or small business customer (1-10 connections), there are no charges for network unlock codes." Source - support.vodafone.co.uk/Set…htm

Sounds to me like there are grounds to complain if you get asked for £20.

? its still £249 + £10 top up. Free to unlock but may take 30 days
Good price but bear in mind Vodafone have a terrible after sales service and do not adhere to Consumer Law - currently battling with them over a refused repair on a 5 month old G4.
warranty issues can be sorted out by Sony directly

some saying £20 to unlock then £10 top up. Can be had for under £300 sim free.
If someone has a Z5 Compact (32gb) and want to swap to a bigger phone, let me know. I have a Moto X Style 64gb purchased from Motomaker.

Yes but a retailer has responsibilities under the Consumer Law Act - they can't ignore that - although Vodafone seem to think so.
